Two-Handed Decks

By PsychoRocka, in Strategy and deck-building

Sorry this has taken me a long time to post.

Both decks have a lot of Silvan allies, readying options, low cost events, attachments and heavily rely on Feint and Feigned Voices versus tough enemies.

There are a number of stronger cards like Warden of Gondor that I could have included however I've been trying to use Elven options where possible - considering Miruvor in place of Expected Courage, but i'm keeping Horn of Gondor - seems made for Silvan Decks! Dropped it, cool but was't really needed.

.

changes:

3x Galadriel’s Handmaiden to replace Silvan Refugee who will move to other deck

2x Cloak of Lórien (1 for Elrond, 1 passed to Celeborn)

Considering:

Warden of Anor - trialed and not convinced, out - Often not questing with Haldir early in the game enough, as I need his combat skills more (getting wing-foot early could change this)... and late game probably not needed.

Deck 2 - Starting threat 25

Changes:

2x TDF Silvan Refugee add in place of 2x Foe Hammer

2x TNIE Bow of the Galadhrim for 1 x Blades & 1 Battle song

Considering:

Lay of Nimrodel or even Hidden Cache to use its card draw action instead of resource songs

Deck 1:

Starts with a high threat but rapidly reduces, contains a lot of card draw and healing for heroes and Silvan characters. Looks to get as many of cheap allies into play early on as it can. Ideally Henamarth and a Handmaiden Refugee and Galadriel Minstrel round one with friends appearing in trees shortly after.

Lacks in defense/attack (Elrond primary/only non chump defender) and this deck really needs a steady flow of Silvan allies to work. A very fragile army. Requiring a number of Test of will's to survive some quests.

Looks to pass across; Asfaloth, Lembas & 2nd copy of Protector of Lorien and Cloak of Lórien.

Deck 2:

Sort of the opposite of other: Contains a lot of archery and has more than one defender that might survive. Ideally gets LoV, O'lorien, Blades & Cram/Naith Scout and Feign Voices in the starting hand.

Passes across; 2nd Rivendell Blade and Bow of the Galadhrim.

Deck 1: Tactics/Leadership (Elven Fury)
Heroes:
Legolas - 9
Elladan - 10
Elrohir – 10
Starting threat – 29
Allies: (19)
3x - Gandalf (Core)
3x - Envoy of Pelargir
3x - Naith Guide
3x - Gondorian Spearman
3x - Galadhon Archer
2x - Galadriel
1x - Faramir
1x - Boromir
1x - Rumil
1x - Orophin
Attachments: (22)
2x - Rivendell Bow
3x - Steward of Gondor
3x - Gondorian Shield
3x - Rivendell Blade
3x - Bow of the Galadhrim
3x - Dunedain Mark
3x - Elven Mail
1x - O Lorien
Events: (9)
3x - Feint
3x - Sneak Attack
3x - Feigned Voices

With the tactics/leadership deck I took out x3 Dunedain Warning and replaced them with 1 copy of Elven Mail (brining it to a count of x3 in this deck), 1 copy of Galadriel (ally) (bringing the count to x2 in this deck) and a copy of O Lorien.
Firstly I took out Dunedain Warning as with the new Elven Cloak card in the spirit/lore deck Dunedain Warning is far less necessary. It is a fantastic card, especially at 1 resource but is in leadership and leadership resources are sacred to allow Elrohir to defend properly anyway so on some occasions it may be more worthwhile being able to defend an additional time than the extra point of defense. With Gondorian Shield, Elven Mail, Elven Cloak and Arwen Elrohir still has 7 or 8 points of defense and six hitpoints. This is more than enough and considering the abundance of effects that stop enemy attacks or allow player attacks first (Haldir) in these decks anytime this is not enough defense you can hopefully stop an attack in another way.
I did this mainly to include a copy of O Lorien in this deck but have also wanted a second copy of Galadriel for a while as well. I also decided to bring Elven mail back up to x3 instead of x2 as without Dunedain Warning the extra hitpoints and sentinel (if Arwen is not in play) are even more important than usual. It can also be put on Glorfindel with a Cloak of Lorien and LoV attached turning him into a powerhouse quester, attacker AND defender. The Galadriel ally is just awesome, pretty much always bringing an attachment into play and providing a nice willpower boost for the turn. I included a second copy as because she discards anyway at the end of the round you can still easily play both copies if you draw both. She is almost like the Gandalf all providing a powerful effect and a willpower boost for the turn when played.
O Lorien was an experimental addition and after literally a single game I will definitely be keeping it around! It can allow you to play Galadhon Archer and a weapon attachment in the one turn (and even first turn) with the tactics/leadership deck (and then easily replay it for one after using a feigned voices). It can allow you to play a 1 cost Naith Guide saving a precious leadership resource. You can also play Galadriels Handmaiden or Rivendell Minstrel for a single spirit/lore resource. It can even allow a two cost Silvan Tracker allowing you to play it with the lore resources from a single turn without having to save resources for a turn. It also obviously makes the expensive Rumil and Orophin more affordable. Although it costs a leadership resource to play O Lorien it can save you tactics, leadership AND lore resources throughout a game and even if it only saves you a single resource or two it allowing you to play a Silvan ally AND another cheap card you wouldn't have normally been able to play that same turn could be invaluable. It could allow a Feint, A Test of Will or Sneak attack for example in the same turn as playing a Silvan ally.

Deck 2: Lore/Spirit (Elven Finesse)

Heroes:
Elrond - 13
Haldir Of Lorien - 9
Glorfindel (spirit) – 5
Starting threat – 27
Allies: (18)
3x - Arwen Undomiel
3x - Galadhrim Minstrel
3x - Warden of Healing
3x - Northern Tracker
3x - Galadriel's Handmaiden
2x - Silvan Tracker
1x - Gildor Inglorian
Attachments: (16)
3x - Asfaloth
3x - Light of Valinor
3x - Ranger Spikes
1x - Unexpected Courage
3x - Lembas
3x - Cloak of Lorien
Events: (18)
3x - A Test of Will
3x - Elrond's Counsel
3x - Hasty Stroke
3x - Galahadrim's Greeting
3x - Gildor's Counsel
3x - Daerons Runes
Sideboard: (3)
3x - Power of Orthanc (simply added if needed)
3x - Forest Snare (simply added if needed)
1x - Fortune or Fate (simply added if needed)
With this deck I replaced the single copy of Dark Knowledge and my proxy second copy of Unexpected Courage with 2 copies of Silvan Tracker. Dark Knowledge is pretty great allowing many shadow card reveals throughout a game allowing you to better plan your defenses but its more of a backup card that anything and its getting might hard to trim any fat when making changes to these decks so essentially because the card is not essential it gets replaced.
Unexpected Courage I removed for a few reasons, first off I usually have no use for a second copy and it does cost 2 spirit resources which could be better saved for A Test of Will or other great spirit cards. Also playing with proxies is fine if the cards will soon be replaced as soon as I get the new pack the cards are actually in but I don't see myself getting another copy of Unexpected Corurage any time soon so it comes out as well.
To put it simply this deck lacks allies sometimes. Also because of the high number of events often you will have a few too many that aren't playable or useful just yet and not enough allies or attachments. I added two copies of Silvan Tracker which seems like an awesome combo with O Lorien. It brings the cost down to 2 meaning it can be played with the resources gained in one turn. Its also a pretty great ally bringing even more offensive elven power to these decks allowing you to leave weakened enemies on 1 or 2 hitpoints for this ally to clean up so that you can focus your heroes on new or more nasty enemies rather than already injured ones. It can also add 1 willpower to questing when there is not much combat going on. At 2 hitpoints its also another Silvan ally that can surive a point of damage and although my decks do not fully embrace the Silvan trait (No Celeborn, only one copy of O Lorien, no copies of Tree People or Island Amid Perils or Pursuing the Enemy or Defender of the Naith) I do draw upon the use of many Silvan cards and depending on future card may further do so. Especially if more awesome silvan allies (that can replace my non thematic allies like Gondorian Spearman, Warden of Healing and Envoy of Pelargir) are released that will make O Lorien even better and Tree People good enough to include.

But it is in Leadership which ??? And why did you put galadriel ally in? (obvious reasons, but its fun to read your thoughts)

Posted as I left work hence no thoughts etc. I'll edit it now :D

So both to go back and defeat Nightmare Shadow and Flame and also just because it seems like a good idea for all quests I've made a few new changes to the Lore and Spirit deck.

Deck 2: Lore/Spirit (Elven Finesse)
Heroes:
Elrond - 13
Haldir Of Lorien - 9
Glorfindel (spirit) – 5
Starting threat – 27
Allies: (17)
3x - Arwen Undomiel
3x - Galadhrim Minstrel
3x - Warden of Healing
2x - Northern Tracker
3x - Galadriel's Handmaiden
2x - Silvan Tracker
1x - Gildor Inglorian
Attachments: (18)
3x - Asfaloth
3x - Light of Valinor
3x - Ranger Spikes
1x - Unexpected Courage
2x - A Burning Brand
3x - Lembas
3x - Cloak of Lorien
Events: (18)
3x - A Test of Will
3x - Elrond's Counsel
3x - Hasty Stroke
3x - Galahadrim's Greeting
3x - Gildor's Counsel
3x - Daerons Runes
Sideboard: (3)
3x - Power of Orthanc (simply added if needed)
3x - Forest Snare (simply added if needed)
1x - Fortune or Fate (simply added if needed)
Essentially I removed a Northern Tracker and added x2 of A Burning Brand. With how often a game loss can come from shadow effects A Burning Branch is just a fantastic card, the only reason I ever removed it from these decks is because Elrohir took on the role of uber defender for both decks and Elrond was rarely if ever used for defensive duties anymore. Also when I removed Loragorn it got a LOT less useful. After getting utterly pummelled by nightmare Shadow and Flame a week or two ago I've decided to go in with A Burning Brand and hope for the best considering that the main threat in that quest is the nasty shadow effects that Durin's Bane receives from the new "attack" cards. Now thinking about it really I should always include a few copies. Even if you only use Elrond once or twice in a match for defense A Burning Brand could potentially save him from a nasty shadow effect that would have otherwise killed him. As well as this these decks have come a long way and can quest with much more willpower and much more effectively with cards like Gildors Counsel etc so holding Elrond back from questing once you have your forces built up is definitely not something that would be too detrimental so long as you have plenty of allies or even just the Faramir ally out. As well as this in many quests that feature very nasty shadow effects or boss enemies that are given bonuses for shadow effects resolving A Burning Brand can shut them down entirely. Not only Durin's Bane in Nightmare version of Shadow and Flame but also The Nazgul of Dol Guldur and Lord Alcarnon
To further this effect I can easily put LoV on Elrond instead of Glorfindel allowing him to quest AND defense thereby not losing out on his three willpower and can still quest with Glorfindel but not attack with him as well. Unexpected Courage may be put on Elrond instead of Haldir on occasion now as well if he has A Burning Brand attached. Also this now means that your second copy of Elven Mail and Cloak of Lorien actually serve a purpose and by stacking both these AND a brand on Elrond you can ensure he will be able to defend more or less anything and only require minor healing. Also you can simply use Elrond to quest while the lore/spirit deck is able to remain unengaged to any enemies and the tactics/leadership deck and Haldirs ability are able to clear them and then when the lore/spirit deck DOES get engaged by something especially nasty hold Elrond back from questing so he can defend against that enemy and negate its shadow effect. This will also provide much less strain on Elrohir defending all attacks and may cancel a shadow attack with a nasty/sneaky effect that was still going to damage or even kill/discard him even with his almost impenetrable defense.
A copy of Northern Tracker was taken out as he is quite expensive to play and honestly rarely needed, both Asfaloth and Legolas are far better for when you get location locked.
Also worth mentioning is the deck stands at a 53 card count. The tactics/leadership deck remains at 50 and I would force myself to slim this one down as well but I really don't count Daeron's Runes in the card count.
It costs zero, can be played any time as an event even during staging on the first round so because it instantly replaces itself with 2 other cards (even if you do have to discard one) it doesn't really stop you from drawing something you may have needed but instead actually is almost like 2 cards in one (with the minor drawback of discarding a card). As well as this it is the only form of card draw in this deck (which is potentially one of both my decks biggest weaknesses). Oh totally forgot! if you randomly do get Gildor and A Burning Brand together it fits very very well on him as well!
Hope you enjoyed my rant as always =)

Hmmmmm.... very tempted to try out swapping Legolas for the upcoming Tactics Aragorn Hero (tactigorn! :P )

and removing some cards from both decks to run x2 Sword that was Broken and x2 Wingfoot.
My thoughts are that Aragorn can quest instead of Elladan and Elladan can still be pumped up with blades etc (and even Bow of the Galadrim if Rivendell Bow is equipped first) instead of Legolas and the rest can be put on Haldir (who receives the first two almost always anyway) and Glorfindel. This way Elladan takes over the previous duties that Legolas had and Aragorn takes over Elladans. Elladan will usually gain ranged and even if not Haldir and Glorindel (and various allies, orophin rumil etc) can help with attacking duties as per usual, so can Aragorn if he isn't needed for questing or has Wingfoot attached. As well as this he will gain the Leadership sphere from StwB as well as +1 willpower (+1 to all other characters for this deck as well) and with Wingfoot will also be able to potentially both quest and attack. His -1 to defense to enemies engaged with this deck would be insanely good as this deck engages most enemies anyway, it would help Haldir more easily kill enemies engaged with the other deck with his ability and would help Elladan more easily take out enemies as well.
Elladan taking over attacking duties from Legolas in this situation would allow use of Elladan's ability as well and if you get ranged and a few other attack boosting attachments on him he can easily clear most enemies on his own. With appropriate defense set up and enough resources on Elladan you could safety quest with all other heroes but Elrohir and Elladan and still defend everything and then take out all or most enemies as well. This would potentially allow the brothers to shine.

I see many many boosts to the decks with this change including (repeating myself but will keep it brief and to the point) allowing Elladan's ability to be properly used, Aragorn's two abilities, Aragorn's boost to questing through the Sword, Aragorn being able to attack alongside Elladan after questing with Wingfoot and the boost to Haldir's ability through the -1 defense.

The only real downsides I can see are the loss of Legolas's progress ability and two heroes with ranged off the bat (can fairly easily get it on Elladan to replace this and also have many allies with ranged as well) and the high starting threat.

Any thoughts anyone?

Sounds like a fun experiment at least. I'm always sad to see Legolas go, but Aragorn should be pretty fun.

Instead I tried out the Galadriel Hero instead of Glorfindel and x3 Nenya instead of x3 Asfaloth against Journey down the Anduin and it went really really well!! Light of Valinor on Elrond worked really well and Galadriels effect every round (never drew Nenya!) was insanely insanely good. May very well stick with these changes depending on several more test games.

Yea, I love Galadriel, and unless I'm building a deck that has very little willpower, I don't care at all if she never sees Nenya.

Question for you guys: When building these two handed decks do you artificially constrain yourselves to 3 total copies of a card (or less)? For example, if you had Galadriel in one hand and Sp Glorifindel in the other, would you allow yourself 6 total copies of A Test of Will?

Very nice question! I however use a tactics/leadership deck and spirit/lore deck so apart from Neutral cards, of which I don't use many, I don't have any cards both decks can play anyway so only ever run x3 of anything across both deck.

If something like A Test of Will (not that it would ever be but just purely hypothetical) was neutral I wouldn't stop myself or consider it wrong in any way to include x3 copies in both decks.

I also only have one core set so unless the card was that good I wouldn't bother making proxies and would still just run the x3 in one deck.

Oh oh I used to run x2 Core Set Gandalf in each deck but changed that to 3 in the leadership deck (duh for sneak attack) and none in the spirit/lore deck.

Yea, I love Galadriel, and unless I'm building a deck that has very little willpower, I don't care at all if she never sees Nenya.

I've played two matches so far, Journey down the Anduin (which I won and didn't get nenya all match) and Celebrimbors Secret (which I lost but had Nenya AND Unexpected Courage on Galadriel) and Nenya definitely isn't integral unless its a quest that requires high willpower off the bat. Even with Nenya and Unexpected Courage I wasn't able to overcome my first attempt of Celebrimbor's Secret but I had super unlucky draws and had so many locations come out... on the first game I don't have Asfaloth anymore!

I mostly play online using OCTGN, so if I have two decks with the same spheres, I won't limit myself. In the current versions of the decks I posted here I have 3x A Test of Will in each deck because it's almost never a dead card and because I played Steward's Fear with only 3x total and it totally failed. I specifically built both decks to have Lore in them because I wanted both decks to have 3x Galadhrim Minstrel and 3x The Tree People. They are that good and practically essential to Silvan decks. I also gave each deck 2x (I believe) Silvan Trackers.

Wow so just lost another 3 games of Celebrimbors Secret using Galadriel instead of Glorfindel and after swapping back to Glorfindel and having Asfaloth first turn I won on my first attempt..... Don't think I'll be makin this change after all as Asfaloth is utterly intergral for ALOT of quests that are location heavy. Just northern trackers and raw willpower are not enough, especially in quests like this where locations staying in play too long trigger nasty effects (scour in this quest).

I even had x2 Asfaloth in the Galadriel version of the deck but it was simply not enough. Galadriel you were insanely fun to play with but im keeping my Glorfindel crutch after all it seems! =\

I made a few minor changes when swapping back to using Glorfindel

Deck 1: Tactics/Leadership (Elven Fury)
Heroes:
Legolas - 9
Elladan - 10
Elrohir – 10
Starting threat – 29
Allies: (19)
3x - Gandalf (Core)
3x - Envoy of Pelargir
3x - Naith Guide
3x - Gondorian Spearman
3x - Galadhon Archer

3x - Elven Mail
1x - O Lorien
Events: (9)

Erestor is a great ally and I simply added x1 of him! More willpower is always good and his ability can be very useful.

Deck 2: Lore/Spirit (Elven Finesse)

Heroes:
Elrond - 13
Haldir Of Lorien - 9
Glorfindel (Spirit) – 5
Starting threat – 27
Allies: (17)
3x - Arwen Undomiel
3x - Galadhrim Minstrel
3x - Warden of Healing
2x - Northern Tracker
3x - Galadriel's Handmaiden
2x - Mirkwood Runner
1x - Gildor Inglorian
Attachments: (19)

Sideboard: (3)
3x - Power of Orthanc (simply added if needed)
3x - Forest Snare (simply added if needed)
1x - Fortune or Fate (simply added if needed)
Took out a copy of Northern Tracker and added a single copy of Vilya, just giving Elrond spirit Sphere alone helps play Galadrims Greeting and also lets you more easily save a back up resource for Test of Will and Hasty Stroke. It also makes unexpected courage easier to play. The ability itself is great especially if its in a game you decide to play LoV on Elrond instead of Glorfindel as this way you can quest with Elrond and use Vilya as well. The ability isn't overly amazing in this deck however and can actually fail altogther on several cards but it can also be quite powerful getting you a free Gildor or Northern Tracker or even just smaller ally that triggers an effect like the two Silvan allies in this deck. It can also give you a free 6 threat reduction from Galadrims Greeting or put one of many useful attachments into play such as ranger spikes, lembas, asfaloth etc. Just x1 as it will sometimes fail and should only be used when you're in a good position/during a good round, as an all or nothing move or when you have LoV or Unexpected Courage on Elrond anyway or many allies out.

Question for you guys: When building these two handed decks do you artificially constrain yourselves to 3 total copies of a card (or less)? For example, if you had Galadriel in one hand and Sp Glorifindel in the other, would you allow yourself 6 total copies of A Test of Will?

(mostly play with the cards just don't enjoy the electronic versions as much)

Ok so some major changes I'm posting today!! Decided to embrace the Silvan trait a little more and replaced Legolas with Celeborn! My logic is that for the threat gain of two Elladan will now no longer quest and will pick up Legolas's attacking duties (will not have ranged or the progress ability but can attack multiple times) and instead Celeborn will take up Elladan's questing duties with an additional point of willpower off the bat! As well as this all the various Silvan allies in my two decks will now get the boost from Celeborn on the first turn they enter play. Considering I already use all four basic Silvan allies (Minstrel, Archer, Handmaiden and Guide) and a few others as well (Mirkwood Runner and Orophin) this seems pretty **** beneficial I've also removed most of the less necessary or important tactics cards so that Elladan will only pay for essential tactics cards and be able to use his multiple attack ability more often. Most of these tactics cards weren't very thematic anyway other than Rumil who had to come out as he is simply too expensive now that I have only one tactics hero. I then included a second copy of O Lorien, the Galadriel ally and put x3 Pursuing the Enemy which is tactics but 0 cost.
O Lorien also helps reduce the cost of the Archer to one tactics resource.
Erestor, Orophin, Galadriel and Faramir are all far more playable now and will also have far less impact on Elrohir's ability to defend multiple attacks as Celeborn can help pay for them and Orophin can only cost 2 from O Lorien as well. Steward of Gondor is also MUCH easier to play first turn now and will then also provide its two resources allowing you to play O Lorien AND Sneak Attack Gandalf or O Lorien and a Naith Guide or even O Lorien/Sneak Attack and a Dunedain Mark all on the first turn and not including what you can do with your tactics resource on Elladan. Galadriel ally is now much more useful and can put into play one of your tactics attachments which although they only cost 1 because there is only one tactics hero now is far more useful than it was before.
This new version of the deck is working incredibly well so far and seems to provide far more questing power and even damage output sometimes and the only real detrimental effect from the changes seems to be the loss of Legolas's progress ability. I think what would have been really cool is for one of the Silvan events to have returned a Silvan ally to your hand and put progress on a location equal to that allies cost. Thematic (the elf is scouting an area for you) and useful!
Don't know why I was so hesitant to go full Silvan but now that I have I don't regret it a bit. You could argue it isn't quite full Silvan as there is no Galadriel, Tree People or Island Amid Perils. Unless we get a couple more Silvan allies in the Lore and Spirit sphere I don't think The Tree People is quite good enough for the way I have my decks set up and Island Amid Perils is good but I have a fair bit of threat reduction already. Galadriel just isn't for me but the two events may get included in the future. I also really love all the Noldor cards and effects I still use and will not be abandoning them probably ever especially not Elrond and his offspring Elrohir, Elladan and Arwen.

Only one change to this deck which was removing the two copies of Burning Brand and putting in two Silvan Trackers. With the new changes and further embrace of the Silvan trait in the other deck it only seems right to include a few more Silvan allies in this deck as well. Now I've been going on about Burning Brand a lot lately and as good as it is on Elrond even if he only defends a couple of times in a game I rarely ever use him to do so and with the new addition of Celeborn who also makes a fantastic defender (can have all the same items as Elrond (cloak, elven mail etc) except Burning Brand BUT is healed by the Silvan Trackers) its a waste of two cards in this deck. So often if a shadow effect is going to harm me its going to anyway as I've already used Elrond to quest (or even to use Vilya which I now run x1 of ). Unexpected Courage fits better on Haldir (or even Celeborn) if Elrond doesn't have Vilya and LoV is obviously better on Glorfindel so Elrond is simpy not often used enough as a defender to justify Burning Brand. Silvan Tracker however will heal many characters including Haldir, Celeborn, Orophin and Mirkwood Runners and itself obviously which is great against Archery and direct damage and it also provides a point of willpower or attack to help out as well (or 2 on the turn it enters play thanks to Celeborn).

I took out the Envoys of Pelargir and replaced them with x3 Protector of the Naith but ultimately found them somewhat lacking in power and have instead put in x3 Booming Ent. I also replaced Faramir with Treebeard.
This way not only is the deck far more thematic with all allies being Silvan, Noldor or Ents. Of all races Elves are most likely to have Ents fight alongside them as I believe it was Elves who first taught the Ents to speak. The Protector was decent almost simply for the sentinel keyword but ultimately was lacking in power for a cost of 3. Having an extra resource on Elrohir is far more useful as he has a much higher defense and amount of hit points. Often the Protector dies from his first defensive duty and is always most useful the first turn he is played thanks to the +1 def boost from Celeborn. I played a few games where I was able to get Elven Mail on Elrohir and so could give Arwen's boost to the Protector each round instead and use them both to defend. As good as this was to have an extra defender the Protector could only ever block one attack and was useless for combat or questing with 0 willpower and 1 attack. Ultimately unless I had O Lorien and could play the Protector cheaper and had either a second Cloak of Lorien or both Elven Mail AND Arwen it never really seemed worth the cost especially if a more powerful and cheaper ally could be used instead. Booming Ent can provide a single defensive duty when need be and survive a bit more damage (3 hit points and 2 defense instead of 2 of each like the protector) and then becomes a much better attacker with 3 attack strength. If you get Treebeard out and let him soak up some archery or defend an attack and take damage you can get a Booming Ent up to 4 attack power. Yes they take a turn to be of any use because they enter play exhausted but Treebeard can help ready them with his ability and they can also be used to soak archery damage. Pursuing the Enemy and Feigned Voices still have more than enough targets and were in use and working supremely well before I even added the 3 copies of Protector of the Naith. Also with my overall attack capabilities slightly diminished at times from my removal of Legolas a while ago the Booming Ents and Treebeard help fill this in a little especially late game in which Ent allies can massively help smash bosses faces in.

I followed a similar trend in this deck and took out x2 Mirkwood Runners and x1 Unexpected Courage to put in x3 Wandering Ents. I also removed Vilya to put the third copy of Galahadrims Greeting back in. Threat reduction is simply too important and Vilya was more or less simply to give Elrond the spirit sphere as often using it would result in failure (events at the wrong time, duplicates of uniques etc) as the deck is simply not built for the effect. Also the only two cards spirit resources are ever saved to play are Greeting and Northern Tracker as the rest are either 1 cost or are like the Handmaiden or Arwen and cost 2 which Elrond can also pay for with his ability. The Mirkwood Runners are rarely used for their ability and instead usually used to quest or attack with other characters to kill enemies rather than merely wound them. The first turn they are played they are decent though as they are able to kill a 3 hitpoint enemy on their own. Ultimately they are too average and not at all integral to the Silvan trait and decks. Enter the Wandering Ents! Often more than anything this deck lacks defense when resources run low on Elrohir or sentinel has not yet been given to him. Wandering Ents are not the best defenders but pretty hardy with 2 defense and 3 hitpoints. Hopefully they will on occasion defend an emergency attack and still live to quest or attack on consequent turns. They provide equal attack power to the Mirkwood Runner (except for first turn), more willpower and defensive capability. They are also cheaper although they do enter play exhausted.

Are you going to put the new Legolas ally in these decks? (deck 1 I suppose) :)

Are you going to put the new Legolas ally in these decks? (deck 1 I suppose) :)

Man are you on the money! I'm trying to figure out what to take out right now to put him in! The only issue is that he costs 4 and is in tactics... I removed Rumil who costs 3 as he cost too much and too often resources are better spent on attachments, feints or simply to allow Elladan to attack multiple times. I figure if I include a third copy of O Lorien he will more or less always only cost 3 instead of 4 which is a bit more manageable. Considering how much better he is than Rumil and how he can allow you to draw an additional card on many turns not just once I figure I will quite often save resources just to play him considering his strength. He is also a decent choice for sneak attack as he will still have 4 attack power from Celeborn and will draw you a card then return to your hand to be played permanently later on when you have the resources. This may not be anywhere near as good as sneak attack Gandalf but could still be pretty **** handy in a situation where you need that additional boost of 4 attack to take out a nasty foe and you will also draw a card while you're at it.

I'm also considering cards like Song of Battle, Good Harvest etc to make him a bit more playable... If I do so I may even put a copy of Rumil back in as well....

Cool, cool! No, I'm just excited about this thread and thus your decks! :)

Well that didn't last long! Didn't even play a single game with the Booming Ents as the new Legolas and Gimli allies were just revealed and I decided to make further changes to this deck to implement them. Legolas is an amazing ally providing repeatable card draw which this deck needs and is a 3 attack strength ally with ranged (4 attack power the turn he enters play). O Lorien makes him playable at a cost of 3 instead of 4 and with the new changes I made to the other deck you will see the other way I intend to get him in play. I also included a third copy of O Lorien so that it appears in almost all games and provides its discount to Silvan allies a bit more regularly. 1 cost Galadhon Archer is ridiculously good as are 1 cost Galadriels Handmaidens or 2 cost Orophin. 3 cost Legolas or Rumil is definitely far more doable than 4 cost and makes them playable in this deck where they would possibly not be otherwise. The Silvan Trackers, Galadhrim Minstrels and Naith Guides don't need the discount as much and are easier and cheaper to play but can still provide a saved resource that may allow you to play a second ally or card in the same turn where you would not normally be able to. Considering I added a third copy of O Lorien and Legolas I also decided to put a copy of Rumil back in as well. He's a good ally and has a good ability that with an additional ranged ally or two in play can take out an enemy on its own. He also provides 3 willpower or 3 attack first turn and then 2 of either every consequent turn. Lastly Gimli is also a great ally and can quest for 2 and then attack or defend if an enemy is revealed from the encounter deck. Throw in Sentinel and you've got one very useful ally! Now Gimli isn't Silvan or even Noldor and is obviously a Dwarf and seems very unthematic in my decks, consider however how close his friendship to Legolas becomes and how famous their friendship becomes. If ANY dwarf (third age at least) could and would fight alongside a group of hardened elf warriors and lords it would be Gimli for sure! The majority of the game is set before any of the events in LOTR however so technically Gimli has yet to change his mind and heart about Elves but we can always pretend can't we :P
I'm sure once a better tactics or leadership Silvan or Noldor unique ally that fits the deck better is released I'll replace Gimli with them but for now he makes a great addition to the deck and any game where I get both Legolas and Gimli out is sure to be very fun!

Now this change is a little more interesting. I used Elf Stone quite a bit when I very first got into the game and got my hands on Black Riders. I was nowhere near as good at the game then as I am now however and was a bit too obsessed with combat and combat tricks and did not run decks that were very good at questing. I would often run into situations where I required only a single extra point of progress to clear a location and had elf stone not been attached I would have cleared it and been able to travel to a new location. This would lead to getting location locked and threating out. I abandoned Elf Stone and actually really disliked the card for a while questioning why even with the awesome beneficial effect you would ever want to give locations extra quest points because it would on occasion be almost entirely responsible for a loss, or so I thought...

Now that I am much better at the game and rarely get location locked thanks to Asfaloth and Northern Tracker I think its time to give Elf Stone another go especially considering how many allies in both decks it is useful for.

In this deck it can be used to great effect to get either a Northern Tracker, Silvan Tracker or Gildor into play much cheaper (saving you either 3, 2 or a whopping 4 resources) or even just to get an additional cheap ally out for free. This can also be very useful as you may get a Handmaiden or Minstrel out for free which would then trigger their enter play effects.

In the other deck elf stone can be used to even greater effect to get Legolas, Gimli, Rumil, Erestor, Orophin, Galadriel or even Gandalf out for free. It is very useful for the tactics allies to get them out much faster and useful for the leadership ones so that resources can be saved on Elrohir for defensive duties.

In many situations you can combo elf stone and asfaloth by placing elfstone on an active location that already has progress and then immediately exploring the location with asfaloth. So long as you play it on relatively safe turns (where you are almost positive you will quest succesfully and clear the active location) or combo it with Asfaloth the +1 quest point is inconsequential.

Update:
Played two games last night with the new changes. Legolas is insanely good, Gimli is yet to see play and elf stone is working pretty **** well so far even when it just gets a two cost ally in play.

Also Woo! Links added =)

I've seen you evolve these decks over a long period of time. They've gotta be pretty good by now. I really need to give them a try.

Thanks man =) Yeah they hold up pretty well against most quests. If you do let me know how you go!

Deck 2: Lore/Spirit (Elven Finesse)

Just a minor change to the lore/spirit deck. The two Northern Trackers have been removed and replaced with two Lorien Guides instead for both thematic and other reasons. First of the Northern Trackers are fairly expensive at 4 spirit resources and usually require saving resources over a few rounds to play. Secondly they are used almost purely for their ability and for questing so their overall good stats are rarely used for defensive or offensive purposes and are wasted. Compare this to the Lorien Guide, who has an arguably slightly less powerful ability but costs 1 less or even 2 less if you use O Lorien's ability to cheapen its cost (being a silvan ally) which is far far more affordable and could be played by Elrond and Glorfindel with a single turns worth of resources. As well as this it has 2 willpower the first turn it comes into play and doesn't boast any other stats other than 1 attack (2 first turn its in play) so is more or less purely used for questing and no stats are wasted. It also has 2 hit points and won't die instantly from 1 damage like some other silvans and can even be healed by Silvan Trackers. As for its actual ability, often it will not be anywhere near as good as the Northern Trackers ability but sometimes it will be able to clear an active location that has a nasty effect before the effect can trigger a last time and before staging is resolved. It also allows you to slowly clear active locations even if you quest unsuccessfully and do not get to place progress from questing which helps with location lock and will allow you to travel to a new location and lower threat in the staging area even when questing unsuccessfully. As well as this this ability comes in handy when there are no locations in staging but there is an active location whereas Northern Tracker helps only against locations in staging. So the inferior ability is still very useful and still a powerful location control effect and more so helps clear active locations rather than locations in staging.

Also worth noting that whilst Elfstone makes Northern Tracker more playable as you can get one into play for free Elfstone is included and used much more so for the Tactics/Leadership deck to be able to get Legolas, Gandalf, Erestor or Rumil out for free or to a lesser extent Orophin or Galadriel. This is not only because these allies are more expensive and powerful than those in this deck but also so that resources are saved on Elladan and Elrohir when possible and used for their abilities when necessary especially Elrohir.

After this change the only characters in either deck not belonging to the Silvan or Noldor trait are the Wardens of Healing, Gandalf and Gimli!

Removed Pursuing the Enemy to make space for a new card. Pursuing the Enemy is very useful in certain situations but will also sometimes sit in my hand for most of or even all of a game. It is useful to have so that late game if a nasty foe is left on one hitpoint you can kill it before it does more damage with this event however this deck can often handle combat quite well and does not need the help from Pursuing the Enemy. The event has even won me a game or two I believe but I do have Galadhon Archer, Gandalf and Rumil to do direct damage as well.

I used the three card slot to include 3 copies of the new card Secret Vigil. It reduces the threat of a single enemy by 1 and also reduces each players threat by the enemy's printed threat when the enemy is destroyed. This is exactly what my decks need as the tactics/leadership deck almost always threats out first as it has higher starting threat and has ONLY Gandalf to lower its own threat whereas my other deck can lower its own threat with Elronds Council or either decks threat with Greeting or Handmaiden. Secret Vigil however reduces BOTH players threat and by a decent amount (2 to 4) so long as it is placed on a suitable enemy. Reducing both decks by 3 or 4 could secure a safe threat level and help achieve victory in many a situations as my decks play slightly slowly and often reach high threat levels in many a quest. I will be trying out this change for my next several games (against quests I think secret vigil will be good against) and depending on whether the Pursuing the Enemy is sorely missed or not I will keep the changes.
