Tie Phantom

By asmodeo2, in X-Wing

I see few really good combinations with this ship, specially with the unique pilot "Whisper". Let me explain the possible setups:

Unique pilot "Whisper" Pilot skill 7

Elite pilot talent: Push The Limit / Expert Handling

System upgrade: Advanced Sensors

Modification: Stigium / Advanced Cloaking device

Now lets see an example of PTL + Adv cloaking device + Adv sensors(around 40 points):

Cloak tokens do not dissapear at end phase. In the first round we choose our action "cloak", so we can start the first combat round cloaked.

1- Choose a green maneuver in the planning phase

2- Before you reveal your maneuver dial, you can do advanced sensors and/or "decloak" in ANY order because both actions trigger before revealing the dial. We can do for example (1) barrel roll and (2) evasion, so we get one stress token

3- Decloak (is not an action, we can do it stressed)

4- reveal the maneuver dial, with the green selected, we remove our stress token.

5- Attack phase: if our attack impacts (remember we have 4 attack dices) we gain an eye token. After our attack we can do a free cloaking action (advanced cloaking device). This can trigger PTL also if not used before.

We started cloaked and we end cloaked wich means 4 defense dice minimum. At the end of our combat phase we have 4 defense dice + 1 evasion token + 1 eye token(probably)

The only "problem" is our low PS (7) compared with other top pilots.

My thoughts: This combo in the right hands could be totally OP because this setups give the tie phantom the ability to be "virtually anywere" if using the skills in a different order. Will be hard to play but even harder to counter imo.

Anyone here also thinks those 40 points are really worth it?

That's assuming the Phantom's got some decent green maneuvers on its dial.

Nvm,ignore post.

ICO Green Maneuvers, you don't have to PTL every round. Just Evade if you need to turtle or barrel roll or focus for attacks. It's an excellent ability. 4 attack and 4 defense, question is if it's going to be worth 40 Pts.

I don't think Adv Sensors are the best sys upgrade for a Phantom. A Sensor Jammer or Enhanced Scopes might be much more useful. Decloaking will already give you a repositioning before you move after all.

Likewise, PTL might not be best because you don't want to be stressed out to often in the future. Stress is going to be "A Big Thing" in future. Personally I think we're going to be seeing a lot of double stressed ships if people aren't careful.

And you haven't added a crew member, something like a navigator or IA on board a Phantom to reposition as needed...

A navigator is best used for a high PS, IA for a Sigma.

Taking a Sigma with IA, SPA and ES you look where your target is going, decloak, take an evade action, reposition, move, stay there and focus or barrel roll to reposition again or cloak to go in deep hiding and then it's time for the PS1 pilots to end up in your crosshairs. In combat shoot for 5 die with focus assuming you are at range 1.

That's 29 points of fun, all for the cost of a barenaked Wedge, no stress.

Now do the same, but make it Whisper with Outmaneuver... 10 points more but worth it, just for the looks of realization on the opponent's face.

And then you run into a YT with gunner and realize that a permanent four evade dice and 4 HP isn't really much more durable than a TIE interceptor with a stealth device. You've got a lot of abilities, but the fact that you're paying 40 points for them means that your opponent can focus enough on your super-ship that your permanent cloak is just the bare minimum you need to even have a chance of surviving.

And of course we haven't seen the dial for the ship yet. I wouldn't get too excited about stress-causing abilities until we see what green maneuvers it has.

Personally I think

Whisper+Veteran Instincts+Advanced Cloaking Device will be more than sufficient and plenty costly (my guess is 38-39pts)

A plain Phantom with a Recon Spec+particle accelerator would probably be a good ship too, 30pts, 2 focus, and the evade whenever you cloak/decloak, so if you need to attack you still have a focus for defense or you can cloak up and turtle with an evade

And then you run into a YT with gunner and realize that a permanent four evade dice and 4 HP isn't really much more durable than a TIE interceptor with a stealth device.

You are still throwing more attack dice out than an interceptor. But generally a YT is the counter to interceptors ANYWAY but something like this can run circles around a lot of other ships other ships.

It is true though that dice (especially defense dice) can turn on you.

I just want to know what the ability on the PS 6 pilot is, that way I can figure out which unique pilot I like better.

That's because the fewer number of evades. If those were equal, it would be just as good to be agile than a tank. As it stands now, B wings and YTs are so strong because they can last more than one round even with focused fire. In wish the evade dice matched the hit dice in number so ships like interceptors would have a better chance than just getting one shotted first combat round.

Pff. It's not OP. Ten Numb's been capable of a similar trick for ages.
