list idea needs some decisions making

By malladin.ben, in X-Wing

Hi all,

I've fairly new to x wing, only have a moderate collection (tiny by what a lot of people on here seem to have buy big enough for my wife to notice it), and I've got my first 100pt tournament coming up. So I thought I'd post some list ideas sown to get some advice.

Firstly, I'd like to play rebels, and I've been looking at Dutch and Garven and thinking that they'll have some good potential together, but then I'm not sure how to build the list around them. Here's my thoughts:

4 ship swarm build: stick the droid that let's you keep target lock on Dutch to get him to kick out 2 locks a turn and take either Biggs and a rookie or 2 rookies and some upgrades. Question is, what upgrades do you think are best to prioritise? Shields or hull for extra hp or an ion turret on Dutch?

3 ship elites: stick one of the 2 repair droids and an extra hull point on Dutch and add wedge with swarm tactics (so Garven can go first and pass his focus to wedge, r2d2 and a shield upgrade. Think there's even points in this build for a hp upgrade on Garven. If I take this build, what's the best r5 droid for Dutch? Cancelling crits or healing normal?

3 swarm + flanker build: the final build idea has Garven and Dutch joined by a rookie and an a wing (probably tycho as he's both great with ptl and high PS to get the most out of positioning himself). Questions about this build: is the high PS needed or could a green do the job?

So, that's my thoughts. Firstly, is the Garven & Dutch build a complete waste of time? Secondly, which of the builds above do you think gives me the best shot at not getting noob-stomped? Finally, what priorities should I be putting on the possible upgrades in the list?

Thanks in advance.

Ben

PS my rebel collection is 3 x wings, a y wing and an a wing.

Use that A-wing and take Tycho with Push The Limit and Cluster Missile.. It's a 'that guy!' tactic but only a few things can counter it. Tycho then boosts every turn and can seriously outflank your opponent. I'd recommend taking an XY mix with your remaining points, maybe something like Gold Squadron Pilot with R5-K6, Proton Torpedo x2, Ion Turret and then escort that with Garven + R2-D2, Proton Torpedo. Tycho will either have a lot of fire heading his way, in which case your X an Y can launch their ordnance at range and then start flank attacks, or he'll be ignored in which case he can sneak up behind your opponent and start harassing them to distract them from your frontal attack.

Are you averse to buying another ship or two? A few considerations if you're not: A YT is always a good purchase for a fledgling Rebel fleet, and any squad based around one doesn't need much filler. If I was going Dutch/Garven, my personal preference would be to flesh the list out with another PS6 pilot. Either Kyle or Ibtisam would do, though I'd lean towards the latter (with PtL).

As far as upgrades go, Dutch is pretty much set with just an Ion Cannon Turret and possibly an R2. If you're intent on using an A-Wing, PtL and/or some kind of missile are usually a good idea. Tycho is a bit pricey for my tastes, so I'd probably use a Green Squadron Pilot (if going with a 4 ship list) or forgo the A-Wing altogether. Using just your ships, I might go with something like this as a base:

26 Garven

23 Dutch

5 Ion Cannon Turret

21 Rookie Pilot x2

96/100

---

That gives you about 4 points worth of upgrades to work with, and I'd say it's definitely noob-stomp proof. Or consider the following list as another base, if you want to focus on only three ships with more upgrade potential:

29 Wedge

3 Push the Limit

1 R2 Astromech

26 Garven

23 Dutch

5 Ion Cannon Turret

87/100

If your keen to use Dutch and Garven together then I'd recommend:

Garven

Biggs

Rookie

Dutch, Ion Cannon

Just fly them close together, Biggs will draw the shots and the others will buff each other nicely.
