Heir to the Empire is gone....

By Crabbok, in X-Wing

Yea I wouldn't hold out hope for Thrawn or Mara. Maybe Luke made the Jedi Order like of old, and made them celibate (a concept I find ironic when you're supposed to be connected to everything but you can't connect with anyone).

Others have criticized Lucas about this aspect of the Jedi code but he was using real-world ascetics as archetypes. Look into the rationale for why some monks take vows of celibacy and I think you'll see that it makes perfect sense for Jedi.

Perfect sense historically, yes, but that doesn't make it right or healthy. Vows of Celibacy are a huge issue wherever they are. Human beings were not designed for it, and have a healthy need for emotional attachement. Case in point, the Jedi being treated as psuedo villains and needing to be re-structured. If they go back to celibacy Anakin's fall did nothing good.(Just saying)

In Jedi terms, I don't think it matters. It's a fictional order of warrior-monks and if celibacy is part of the deal then it can be a source of dramatic conflict (as we see with Anakin, and creepily but briefly with film-Luke) or not (as we see with the rest of the film-Jedi).

Since there is no obvious casting for a romantic partner for Luke in Episode 7, I'm assuming celibacy is still part of the Jedi code -- but that's assuming that Luke is still a Jedi, or that the Jedi Order or Jedi code has any meaning any more.

You're probably right in that prediction for Luke. Cue 'Forever Alone' meme.

Actually, the prequels left me with the impression that Jedi could get some action if they wanted it, but they just weren't permitted to have lasting relationships. I'm probably reading too much into it, though. In any case, connecting with one individual so intimately might be counterproductive for a Jedi who is supposed to be connected to everything, so again I can see a celibacy vow making sense.

Yoda says something about being willing to lose everything you hold dear (I'm paraphrasing), and I think that's what it's all about. A Jedi can be compromised by the complexities of romantic/sexual/familial relationships, putting those relationships ahead of their duties and putting other Jedi at risk as a result. So it's better to put that aside and focus on their duty and commitments to the order, the good of the Republic, etc. It's basically the same reason most real people who take those kinds of vows do so.

In the real world, I don't think celibacy is a problem for lots of people who choose to be, or find themselves to be functionally celibate for whatever reason -- age being a common one. It's when you make a vow (any vow) and don't want to keep it that things can get really bad. Anakin is a pretty good example of that, but I think it was really just a ham-fisted storytelling element and not a deep understanding of how real people operate.

Fair point. But the Jedi order was something created by men, not rules dictated by the force telling them to do so. Only training children that were so young that they wouldn't know their families, forbidding marriage, love and lasting relationships with others and similar decisions were ways to risk mitigate Jedi from falling to the dark side. These weren't some requirements by the force in order to be in touch with it. What the Counsel failed to realize was that you can't prevent the lure of the Dark Side, you can only defend against it. Balance means two sides. It's less of a Christian mentality of 'be good and avoid all evil' and more of a Chinese philosophy that in order to have light there must be dark... The way I see it anyway. I mean, had the counsel condoned Padme and Anakin's marriage, would events have played out the same?

Also, mental image of Yoda "getting some action"... Disturbing.

Apparently you have safe search on when you Google Yoda. Or I was really unlucky that day. Been there, seen that...

So, the cast cast has been announced, and it's up to us to figure out who is playing who. Serkis is the obvious bet for Thrawn, but who's playing Kyle?

Oscars Isaac as Kyle? Will they even have him?

Kyle should be an absolute geezer when the movie takes place, he must be played by Max Von Sydow...

All of this talk about Thrawn makes me wonder who will play Pellaeon (spelling probably off and spell check doesn't help with these names lol) who arguably is the more important in the longer scheme of the EU (not that that EU is relevant anymore). I know they aren't required to keep Pellaeon as Thrawn's number 2 (assuming Thrawn is in the new movie), but their relationship as well as the Chimera seem like such an easy place to keep some of the EU fans happy.

I am willing to call it now(as I am sure many others have) Ep 7 sets a new box office record (really reaching out on a limb with that prediction right?)

I certainly hope so. I'd pine for Sariss as well, but the only actress I know to have aged well enough to satisfy my childhood fantasies is Jane Seymour, and she isn't credited. The prospect of an old, unattractive Sariss makes me a sad panda.

That by itself isn't saying much. They'll probably release it early on a wednesday and claim it's got the box office record for sci fi sequel films released on a wednesday morning in the early summer, not counting inflation because you never take inflation into account otherwise, how are you going to set records? If a blockbuster doesn't break a record these days something is weird and the movie is considered a bust.

Too lazy to google, anyone know off the top of their heads what currently holds the record?

And Jane Seymore would be an awesome Sariss. Now, Jerek? And Jan? And Andy Serkis as the Nogrhi?

Adjusted for inflation, Gone With The Wind. Star Wars ANH is number 3

Thanks!

"Good relations with the Wookies I have."

Well, on the plus side, your imagination has made the movie so terrible it can't help being better than you expect...

That happened to me when I watched the D&D movie, the one from 2000. I had heard over and over just how amazingly rotten it was. So on a rainy Sat afternoon it was on TV so I watched it. Compared to what I was expecting it was actually kinda good.

First person to ever say that the D&D movie was good - EVER :) .

Actually the best thing in D&D was that they did not use any raise dead or any resurrection spell for that really irritating side-kick who died in the end. :) (Because its quite trivial there; 8 hours of sleep for the right guy)
