Tutorial: Painting a simple Planetary System Mat
Nice work!
I actually saw a simpler way to do planets on YouTube. You paint the planet beforehand (the highlight and gas clouds and such), then set a heavy, circular object on top (a full soup can, a metal pot, etc.) and spray the black over it. Then do nebula and white paint flecks for stars, asteroids, and then remove the circular objects to reveal the planets. No need to cut a mask for the planet this way, and no risk of overspray onto the black.
And here I was just going to try and smash a planet onto my mat...

Oh you and your crazy, easier ideas!
Seriously though, I would be afraid of the control issues. It's much easier to control one small stencil at a time, than control multiple (potentially unsecured) masked areas over a large surface. I would also be curious how they achieved a rounded 3d sphere technique without really having an outline drawn or masked on the surface...?
Sorry to post in your topic but I figured this was just as good as any place to show them:

I really dig the gas cloud nebula in the first pic, may have to try that. What colors did you use?
