Smashball

By kinnison, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

One of my players characters is has an obligation that is an obsession to "smashball" since there is VERY limited information on this, i would like some input to what the game is. my only idea right now if his obligation comes up is to have some retired pro player ask him to help. or even some players from the championship team visiting the area and needing a transport.

I know it is mainly used as a star wars themed sport that is played, but might be a good idea to have more detail

My idea is to have it be about as popular and main stream as Football (American). But my ideas are a sort of zero-g style "ball game". Similar to the game room in the book/movie enders game without the laser guns. Also mix in some roller derby, where you have a "Jammer" trying to place a ball into a goal, and the Jammers preventing that from happening. Finally might even include some elements of Rollerball where you have the ball needing to be scored, and nice helping of violence

Some ideas would help. Basic rules, how you would play using characters, skills? and even Positions played.

Not much on Wookiepedia about it, but I did find this discussion.

Since this is an obsession obligation, when it's rolled, you could say that the PC just found out that a major tournament has been scheduled just a few parsecs away, and that he just HAS to get tickets. But darn! They're all sold out. What's an obsessive-compulsive sports fanatic to do? :) He'd have to lie, steal, and cheat his way to the bleachers, maybe getting scalped tickets from an underworld boss, stealing a ship to get to the game, or just participating in good old fashioned hooliganism with those scoundrels rooting for the other team, which, after the damage is cleared, could cost the party more than a few credits to clean up and pay off the fines.

A similar idea would be to have the PC find out there's some rare memorabilia available that he just HAS to have. Again, lying, stealing, and cheating to get his grubby mitts on it, with hired second-story men and Imperial agents chasing down the party. You could also have his obsession come up when the party is in the middle of a big heist, or tracking down their bounty. Everyone's in position, ready to do the smash-and-grab, when the PC suddenly sees the game playing on the cantina's holovid and forgets all about the plan and stops to watch the game, allowing the victim to get away.

As for rules, the "Under a Black Sun" adventure has an example of how to use skills, successes, advantages, etc., to simulate a game of sabacc. It's a totally different thing, of course, but it could give you some ideas on how to use skill rolls to simulate playing the game.

I have absolutely no idea about the Star Wars background to this game. It honestly sounds like a Rollerball rip-off (which is fine). But I would be tempted to play it like NERPS in Shadowrun. I don't think it was ever clear at all what NERPS were, but people loved referencing them and throwing in oblique details such as "they were out of green ones, of course". Or like the English radio game "Mornington Crescent" for anyone who knows it. It could be quite fun.

Or is that idea too off the wall?

OggDude's suggestions are golden.

Also, consider turning it on its head: since your PC is obsessed with smashball (I prefer gravball, but whatever*), perhaps he is wearing or displaying some sort of memorabilia that designates him he fan of a certain team, perhaps one that isn't too popular in this given system. Now your party might have to watch out for other obsessive smashball hooligans, or maybe you've garnered too much attention to be able to do your job under cover, or maybe you've just really offended your would-be patron who is a staunch fan of the opposing team.
