Assault Gunboat Title for Tie Bomber, Thoughts?

My gaming group is doing a campaign where they assault a secret empire ship factory. I'm trying to come up with new prototypes for exisiting ships. Keeping it as simple as possible, but still making it balanced and fun.

For the TIE bomber? Very different models. That being said, the TIE interdictor and TIE Enhanced Bomber (three and five pod bombers) might be just the ticket though.

What you could do which might be fun is to run normal Imperial ships, but the Empire side get less points than the rebel one. In return, they're each randomly assigned one of the Prototype Ship from Imperial Aces's upgrades. (All maneuvers to green, makes two attacks, all crits to hits, +3 hull, immune to secondary weapons fire, an +2 ATK +1 AGL)

+3 points for 2 shields? You must be kidding.

He has a point there given +1 Shield is a mod that costs 4. Maybe make them pay with -1 AGL in line with the Y-wing and B-wing? I doubt an Assault Gunboat would be more maneuverable than them.

Umm... No they aren't even close to the same ship. A TIE bomber is closer to a TIE Fighter is its actual construction (not its battlefield role)

Also I don't like the idea of giving something a cannon upgrade slot but requiring it to be a specific upgrade.

You could simply put an ion cannon-like secondary weapon on the ship without the upgrade if you really need it. But Ion weapons are so different in X-wing the mini game and X-Wing / TIE Fighter the minis game that I don't really think it is necessary.

Could have one ship, maybe a Lambda, with an experimental particle beam where you put the Range Ruler or Maneuver 5 template into the front guides and it deals 3 dice of damage to every ship that intersects, including your own. Easy enough to dodge but nasty to be caught in.

Yeah, the Gunboat would be a completely separate beast. Maybe a stat line along the lines of 2/1/4/4 with a heavy ordinance load out, plus Focus and TL only.

Finally, the solution to get the Star Destroyer in X-wing. Give and upgrade card to the shuttle calling it the Star Destroyer!

Remember trying to setup for a campaign, so just making simple fixes.

Rather than put new ideas on a ship I would do what some missions already do and just give you extra points to add on additional CURRENT modifications.

Example: Rebels attack Imperial research base, Imps deploy new prototype.

Rebels 100 points, Imps 125.

Imps pick generic of any one ship, they may add up to two additional modifications and one additional secondary weapon in addition to that ships normal upgrades and may perform one additional action per turn. Small base ship only.

Rebel objective is anything but team deathmatch to offset the points. Collect intel, destroy prototype, whatever.

Tweak as you like, but adding arbitrary values to upgrades is trouble.

I could see an Assault Gunboat title for a Lambda Shuttle, allowing it to take Missile or Torpedo upgrades, maybe...

Vader+Gunner+Cluster missiles on a Lambda and = Dead B-Wing at Range 2 :)

Making the TIE Bomber as an Assault Gunboat? Shouldn't ever happen. The two ships are barely related; at least you can say the "Avenger" was a direct derivative of the Advanced to make that title argument but that isn't close for the Bomber and Gunboat.

If you were going to introduce a title for the Bomber turning it into some kind of shuttle is the only thing that really makes much sense.

I actually agree, a shuttle does make more sense.

The Assault Gunboat does look shuttle-esque.

Definitely missiles, not torpedoes.

I was going to suggest it should lose the cannon slot - perhaps making "assault gunboat" a cannon card - but looking it up the assault gunboat did carry ion cannons. More importantly, filling the 'title' slot prevents you putting the ST-321 card on it, which could be a serious balance issue for an ordnance truck rather than just a support ship.

Don't short change the Assault gunboat by trying to make something else into it. If you fly an Assault Gunboat, it needs to be a real assault gunboat.

It's just for a campaign he's doing with friends - he's not suggesting FFG release this!

I agree with doing this as a shuttle title card and adding 2 missile slots.

Just saying, if this were my campaign and I wanted Gunboats, I'd go ahead and buy a couple from Shapeways. I just don't like the idea of proxies...

In that case, not to totally screw with your original plan, but why not call it the Escort Shuttle?

Does the campaign really need gunboats? Can't Firesprays replace them?

Well it's tonight and 3 of our players have shuttles, one of them has a firespray, but he is playing rebels.
