How Likely...

By bzinfinity, in X-Wing

I know this is relatively off topic, but I've been considering it in my head for a long time..

Is it just me or would anyone else be interested (forget your wallet for a minute) in a Land-based version of X-wing?

Like, Star Wars: Speeder Bike Miniatures Game.

How cool would it be to have the X-wing rules and mechanics with AT-AT's and Speeder Bikes and T-16's, turret emplacements from Hoth, Snow Speeders, etc.

I know that personally, I would have to sell some other hobby stuff to be able to play both games.

If you added troops it would be like a Star Wars 40k without the time (and financial) commitment I feel like.

Star Wars: Dust Tactics: This is something I most definitely would be interested in.

Battle for Hoth: My favourite part of all things Star Wars. Count me in if it has AT-AT and Snow Speeders.

Count me in!

EXACTLY.

There isn't much material to work with, without branching out into the prequals. And land based stuff works better as an RTS. I would love to see that made again someday.

Personally, I'm not interested in buying that game.

However, I'd like to point out to anyone interested in a ground-based tactical wargame with a Star Wars theme that you can already do this. Lego makes a lot of relatively high-quality Star Wars models, and with a ruleset like Mobile Frame Zero you could easily assign stats to those models and get straight to the table.

…I may or may not have already done this with a lot of my old Pirate and Castle Legos. I plead the Fifth.

My buddy and I made a whole system to use our old Pirate legos in a high seas naval fight game. It is awesome.

Count me in!

"I'm with you, too!"

Done think I could spend the time or money in another game like xwing, but if they did come out with a star wars Boardgame like their civilization game id be all for it

I'd maybe play a Pod Racing game based on the flightpath system

Really?? I can think of a lot of different vehicles for use in a ground game. Not to mention the troops themselves. Off the top of my head for the Imperials - AT-AT, AT-ST, AT-RT, AT-PT, Turbo-Tank (or Juggernaut if you will), AT-PE, AT-XT, Speeder-Bikes, TIE Tanks.. And that's without looking at Wookiepedia.. Then for troop types, you have your generic Stormtroopers, Snow-Troopers, Scouts, Aquatic, Shadow, etc, etc..

Rebels don't have a shortage either.

Yeah, I'd be all over this if they decided to do a ground based version. It would also be quite cool if they did a ground version, but allowed for our favorite dog-fighters to fly support roles. Ties doing a strafing run on a Rebel base would be awesome, or Bombers bringing the pain in a bombing campaign..

Yes PLEASE!

With the same game mechanics I can even see a few scenarios where the two would be compatible... a space scenario to prevent a troop transport from landing and reinforcing a battle.

Or the battle and evacuation of Hoth! Complete with Transports, SDs, X-wings, AT-ATs, snowspeeders, tauntauns, shield generators, etc...

Will it include a Star Destroyer for orbital bombardment? I hear they're required in every Star Wars mini game now.

With the Star Wars License FFG is obligated to keep trying to make money with it. And I am pretty sure they own the license to all game stuff. They have a mini game, a card game and a RPG. So that sounds like they can make pretty much any type of game they want (except electronic probably).

The question becomes what would the ground based game be? Isn't going to be a personal scale game, like the old wizards star wars mini game. Or will it be more focused around vehicles, where ATAT will be common rather than game breakingly huge.

I also don't really see a flight path system really working for ground vehicles unless they are speeders. If its not flight path what is it going to be. If FFG comes up with something as cool and revolutionary as flight path for ground combat I will be super excited, if it isn't then I have just already played so many ground based games. I will probably play it just because it is Star Wars, but I won't get as into it as I am with X-wing.

Totally would like to see it, but like the capital ship game and like hrathen said above, it would require significant reworking of the rules.

Preferably keep it the same scale as x-wing so the ships are cross compatible

The x wing books had many missions that were in I sphere ground strikes. You could even just start a sub campaign with small ships that were in atmosphere. Although the air to ground overlap would be tricky. I'd play battle of hoth and speeder bike / swoop gang fight for sure.

I would buy those for sure... but they would have to be on the same scale as the ships (1:270)... even in another game, it would make my life really happy... lol

1/270 is a smidge over 6mm scale for minis; a fairly popular scale. A board/tactics mini game at that scale (for example Battle for Hoth) could be loads of fun, and not hugely expensive to produce. Starter set with 2 snow speeders and 1 at-at... I'd be buying in.

The problem with infantry is, how do you get the stormtroopers to actually hit anything? I can already hear the crying over faction balance: "Ewok swarms OP, FFG plz nerf."

For landbattles I think it would be best to go to the prequels or rather, the Clone Wars series. It has a lot more established units with screen time than the OT era, and a lot still recognizable to OT purists.

I remember when I was younger we use to play Warhammer like games using Lego people. Best part was for shooting you used the actual cannons, and you could show damage by taking targets apart. :)

Special attacks included dropping a ball on the units and anything that fell over died!
