1: Enchanted Blade, no doubt. The scenarios of which Enchanted Cane would be better are too rare to crown it the better weapon.

2: I'm aware of the opinions that Gladius of Carcosa is actually the best weapon in the game, but I have to disagree. Why? Because for in order to the Gladius to be better than Glory you need another weapon. Sword of Glory isn't dependant of anything. Sword of Glory was, and always will be, the single best weapon in the game.

What do you think?

Previous Great Debates

(1) Enchanted Blade definitly

(2) I think that Gladius has better stats but in my heart it cannot replace Sword of Glory. Oh the joy it has given.

Nah, the shotgun's miles better than either of them. On terms of the actual bonus they give, the shotgun and the sword of glory allow you to expect about the same number of successes, but the shotgun's ability also increases the expected successes from all your own dice (Fight, ally bonuses etc).

And what do you mean "always will be?" For the last time, you haven't played Innsmouth yet! Stop being melodramatic!

There are no new items in Innsmouth..................................

Enchanted Blade hands down. I've never made use of the "can't be lost or stolen" text of any card, unless it counts for Ithaqua's Start of Battle, which I'm not sure.

Gladius is definitely better. Two-handed it's almost as good as the Sword, and with another item in the other hand it surpasses.

Breaks my heart, especially considering that there are so many new investigators. I love new items. But oh well, I've got access to 15 homemade characters that don't use new items. There are tons of items that aren't used as starting equipment.

Maybe that's a preliminary list, and there are new items. Wouldn't hold your breath on that, though.

Sorry to be the one that crashes your last spark of hope, but there are no new items.

As you can see, there are no items, and in the back of every exapnsion you can always see a few items, and here you clearly can't. I will still be the best expansion though. What it doesn't have new items it compensate with x2 investigators a ancient ones than any other board expansion and personal stories for everyone. Best bang for your buck if you as me, especially if you already have all expansions, in which case you have more than enough items to go around.

Ok, ok, I get it. No new items. You should still stop going on about Innsmouth though. You've got no more information than anyone else, and yet somehow you've come to the conclusion that it's going to be the best expansion. I mostly rate the small card expansions higher than the board expansions so far, so while I'm looking forward to new investigators and AOs, I don't expect the board itself to work particularly well. And the personal stories could either be brilliant or pointless, it's too early to tell.

EDITED TO ADD: I've worked it out. Kroen is probably an employee of FFG's marketing department. He is paid to fill up the forums with mindless optimism.

Suddenly it all makes sense.

I would almost always take the Enchanted Blade over the Cane, except when fighting Ithaqua. I know that the Gladius of Carcossa is a fantastic item and I've probably killed much with it. However, the Sword of Glory is just "cooler". Sword of Glory has many, many, memories within my group and it is almost always chosen as the thing to buy given the opportunity (only item to beat it, not all the time, is an Elder Sign). It just has a special place in all of our hearts, plus who doesn't want a weapon called "The Sword of Glory"?

Blade over cane, yup.

And I think that the Gladius is plenty 'cool'. Well, the times that the Gladius isn't used in pair with another weapon are rare, so it's secondary bonus doesn't come up much. However, it's still there, which is nice. Usually I've seen the Gladius' ability come up when using a phys weapon/ Gladius combo, and attacking a monster with Phys Immunity. It's at that point when being able to holster your .38 and two-hand the Gladius that it's awesome.

So, I'd go with the gladius for several reasons. 1. it's cheaper, if buying is an issue. 2. more dice with a +3 off-hand weapon or better, not too hard to get. 3. Gladius combo with even a +2 phys weapon is better than the sword for dealing with mag immunity. I know such things weren't included in the title of the argument, but such considerations (even if either of these were my only weapons at the time) would certainly play a role in deciding. 4. Trading. Ok, so maybe *I* don't have a .45 automatic, a carbine rifle, etc, but maybe somebody else does.

I'm gonna go with the Gladius because of the single-handed utility. Because its bonuses are not that far off from the Sword of Glory, I place more stock in its ability to combine with other items. Not just a good gun, but a Shrivelling or the Red Sign. I can't quite buy into the "greatest single weapon" idea, because although that is mathematically correct, one is not required to choose only one weapon with which to combat (well, most of the time).

And I would choose the Blade over the Cane, too; like Sister Mary's Special Ability, the Cane has a great add-on, but it's just not used all that much.

Unless I was playing Dexter: all dark magicians need a good Cane.

Or Charlie. The Cane would be too close to the Kingpin to ignore.

Or Vincent. Too close to Donald Blake/Thor.

Or Harvey:

"Hey, old man! How much money you got on ya?"

>THWACK<

"AAUGH!!! MY LEG!!!"

"Eat your vegetables, hooligan."
