Timing casual games?

By GroggyGolem, in X-Wing

Recently at home I have decided to time games to 1 hour to teach myself to play faster. Does anyone else time their games at home, at your local venue, or on Vassal when playing casually?

I try to keep each game down to 2 beers per person. If I have to get up to get you a third beer in a single match, you lose.

nopes but thats ok the more u play with a list ure comfortable with the faster u set up the dials ;)

I drink too fast to play with you then...

Our weekly group times our games to get a good pace flow for what a tournament would look like.

If you drink that fast, you get 4 beers in an hour. Minimum. I like to win. ;)

During our normal league seasons we run two matches each league night. They are timed at 75 minutes each unless we have a special event running for the second match. This helps to keep the skills for tournament play sharp. I am a firm believer that you practice like you play so when a tournament comes around, you know what you and your list can do in the allotted time.

I've started doing this in many of the games I play. During friendly play it teaches you to make decisions faster, priorities and how to organize to speed play. It's made us enjoy our games more.

Thanks for the replies. :) Last night was the weekly tabletop gaming night. First round of X-Wing was a 3 man free for all, each squad allowed 100pts. We timed the match and ended it after 1 hour. The second match was a 2v1 that lasted 3 hours because we forgot to time it. One person had to leave so my bro took over the rest of the squad. Down to 1 ship to 1 ship, 1 hull to 1 hull for 7 rounds. It was ridiculous, neither of us could hit the other but it was so close to the end we wanted to see it through.

We often time games using tournament rules, both to see how a squad fares under those conditions, and to allow us to play more games in a given period of time. But other times we'll just play until one side is completely destroyed. Depends on the mood.

Sounds like my regular games! They're usually longer than an hour though... it might have to do with that actually.... hmmm...

Had a game recently.

Me imps : Soontir PTL,Stealth. 2x bounty hunter

Friends rebels : XXXYY

First hour he killed both bounty hunters to the loss of a few shields. Second hour Soontir wiped out all ships barring a very damaged Y that finally ended Soontir.

Great game.

Although going to tournie soon that just doing 1 hour games so that's what we play now. Mistakes that are made are funny. But the learning side is improving

Although it sounds like you still lost in the end Khsofsso what happened kind of proves a point people make about the Interceptor. If you aren't force to "take chances" with the Interceptor they can be extremely effective when given the opportunity to pick their fights and run away when things aren't going their way.

Rematch tonight at my bro's and we remembered to time both matches. First game I conceded to the onslaught with about 20 minutes left. Second game went to time with me taking a modified win. That match was very close. 2 points difference.

I've started running a 1 hour timer on my casual games to help myself play better. Once the timer runs out, I'll check to see who would win the match point-wise, and if there's still time/both players have enough ships on the board to make it worth finishing, we'll keep playing until one side is destroyed. In general though, I prefer keeping games at or under 1 hour, in order to get more games in and build squads that could theoretically perform well in a tournament setting.
