As to why,

Swarm tactics for the 9/9/5/2 PS in the Combat Phase

R2s for the added green maneuvers on the Rooks as it makes them quite flexible when it comes to shedding stress.

Just wondering; why the R2s on the rookies as opposed to Wedge and Biggs?

That is because the Rooks are often the only ones alive in the end game.

The first is 4x Rookies with Engine Upgrades (25 a piece).

Boost on an X-Wing is a great option for a non-focus defensive action, as well as also being great for offense, and at navigating asteroid thickets.

The second is 4x Rookies with Hull Upgrades and R5 Astromechs (Also 25 points a-piece)..

Nothing makes the great offense of an X-Wing better than added tankiness, after all. Having 3 hull on which to stack crits (the 4th would kill you, after all), and remembering that over half of the damage deck is negated by an R5 Astromech (Only 8/33 of it is Pilot-based Crits, but some of the remaining 25 Ship-based crits flip themselves over before the combat phase ends anyway) means that I now have 6-hp Mini-Chewbaccas running around.

As both of these are 25 point builds, one could theoretically mix and match, and potentially throw in a Biggs for good measure.

I like the first list in theory, but getting good use out of boost @ PS 2 is tough. Even offensively, I find boosting to R1 for 4 attack is rarely as good as staying R2 and TL or focus (especially when at PS 2, you rarely shoot 1st, so you are giving opponent a R1 shot unless you can get out of their arc).

The 2nd list is brilliant though - nice evolution on the 4 rookies w/ shield upgrade. Definitely want to try this.

My fave 4X list though is the luke w/ R2D2 & DTF, biggs & 2 rookies. With the new tourney rules, I think its even stronger than the Wedge w/ R2, PtL, Biggs & 2 rookies. I've been debating downgrading Biggs to another rookie to give Luke engine upgrade. My reasoning is that the new tourney rules will favour tanky ships that act as points denial - as long as Luke survives, I just have to kill 75 pts min to guarantee a full win ;)

Losing biggs will make it a bit trickier to fly though....

A dead one burning in the depths of space.

So I've been trying to make 4X with Luke + R2-D2 + DtF even better. Here's something that seems to work pretty good, although you really need to set up a favourable first round of fire or else you will lose Garven early.

Luke w/ R5-P9 & Draw their Fire

Garven

2 Rookies

Without Biggs, I can fly more aggressively in 'aperture formation' (normally Biggs hangs back @ range 3, which limits the effectiveness of his shooting).

Its really nice while Garven is alive because you can use Draw their Fire liberally (Garven's focus on Luke regenerates 1 shield). Unfortunately, Garven is the obvious top priority target...

Oddly I am not seeing more swarn tactics.... why not something like the following (i am not near the game so this is all a guess, but y'all will get the idea)

Wedge- PS9 with ST

Rookied as wingman

garn or another PS 8 or 9 pilot with ST

Rookie wing man

Your fight team gets everyone at ps 8 or 9. I would keeps Rookied in front but its a mean idead. Dunno if possible...

Thaks, from my cell phone....

The Luke and friends build is my favorite.

It's pretty fun to see damage spread to Luke, and R2D2 it back up

This is the list I run. Used it in the local store championships a while back - and only lost to the TIE Swarm. It's fun and the DTF / R2 combo can really frazzle some people. Good times.

Yea, I've found the R2D2 on almost anyone can frazzle people. It can get pretty depressing when you've done more than 5 damage to an x-wing and it's still shooting at you.
