Anyone else think the upcoming OP kit prizes seem a little lacking compared to past kits?

By Spyre, in X-Wing

It's cool that they are doing proton bomb and proximity mine tokens, but two tokens total seems a bit light compared to the number of toekns in previous kits. I know the proximity mine is a larger token than most others, but still I would think four or six total tokens seems like a more appropriate number.

I personally think it's a cool kit. Biggs and Academy pilot cards are great choices as they are popularly used in game. The bomb tokens are going to be a major bragging piece in Epic play. "See that shiny token that is about to blow up your Huge Ship? I won that in an X-wing Tournament." :D

I agree that it's lackluster. There have been two sets of all the tokens previously, and the most recent kit has 3 seismic charges (plus 5 ion)...

But the flip side is that FFG has to maintain the $20/kit, and there's only so much acrylic you can get for that. I don't have the tokens in front of me, but I'm going to go and say that the seismic/proton piece is 40mm x 40mm... and maybe the proximity is 120mm in diameter... and ion/shield tokens are 20mm in diameter. That means since they've normalized the kits (2013 S2 since the S1 had 9 oversized cards, and weird shaped TL that I can't accurately measure, not to mention no medal)...

30 shield tokens = 9420mm^2

20 stress tokens (20mm a side) = 2884 mm^2

10 ion tokens = 3140mm^2

6 seismic charges = 9600 mm^2

1 Proton = 1600 mm^2

1 Proximity = 11304mm^2

So, apparently we got short changed on the stress tokens as far as material... But otherwise they've come from 9400 => 12700 => 12900 mm^2 of material. Now there's also something to be said though for the fact that the larger cuts likely have less waste, so the 9400 of shields is likely to be a similar amount of overall material to the new kits.

So again, it makes sense. I kinda wish there were 2 proton bombs though. It wouldn't make it that much more expensive, but then it would distinguish between 1st and 2nd (since there is no more medal). Plus they reduced the cost of the kit by removing the medal. Given they increased their cost by giving us useless card boxes. *Shrug. Oh well.

Agreed on the Promos probably being the best duo of promos released so far. I know I want 12 of those academy ties myself and Biggs is probably the number one most played pilot for the Rebellion.

As for the tokens they are cool but I am still holding out for acrylic asteroids.

The promo cards are great, but the lack of a medal is glaring, and just two acryllic tokens is underwhelming. The Summer 2014 TK is definitely the most lackluster organized play kit since the Season One 2013 GNK.

and just two acryllic tokens is underwhelming.

As Khyros pointed out, the amount of acrylic they're giving out is the same. Just that this time they're much bigger tokens then normal.

I read his post and I understand. It's still less fun to have two large tokens in the kit rather than a couple packs of 10 tokens.

Depends on what you fly. If you use the prox mine or bombs a lot then having those tokens might be quite a bit more fun then having a bunch of ion tokens or other kinds.

I didn't even notice they removed the medal.

On a side note, I heard the kit was going to go up in price, but I don't know by how much.

Only Khyros and his mathematical mind would even THINK about the total surface area of the token prizes being handed out. If you're ever in Central Florida Khyros, let me know. We need to play a few games. :D

Haha, how does Gencon/Worlds sound?

If you're in Orlando then, let me know. There is a great shop across the street from me that sells x-wing stuff CHEAP and I'd love to play a few rounds.

ALL of the kits have been on the anemic side. FFG you should be ashamed.

A Biggs promo card would be a great addition to my collection to go with both the Wedge promo I have now and the Luke promo we're getting at the regionals. I run a list with all three and it'll be cool to use the promo cards when I play the list.

Hmmm, I wonder how hard it would be to get them autographed.....

Well maybe if this game gets big enough,

Next year's kit will have a lightsaber as the Grand prize.

Maybe they are saving money for the world championship prize : its a kiss from chewbacca. :0

Hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side, kid.

Well, I'm pretty sure that would count as "altering" your cards, which is totally not allowed if you ever plan on playing with them in a premier event.

That's such a stupid rule imo. I really wanted to paint "1" "2" "3" and "4" on my generic cards, so I could just match them to the chit on the ship (well, no, I wanted to paint that on the cardboard base too!)... The fewer tokens I have to keep track of the better.

That said, I think I found a round about way of doing what I want to do... I have all of my cards sleeved in the FFG Star Wars sleeves. I could sleeve them in cheaper thinner sleeves first, paint the # on that sleeve (so the card isn't modified) and then sleeve all of that in the FFG star wars sleeves.

Don't be too proud of this technological terror you've constructed. The ability to wield a blaster is insignificant next to the power of the Force.

Oh yea, well I call it luck.
