Hobbie+Opportunist+Torpedoes

By Deltmi, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Could Hobbie be a "stressless" Opportunist in this build? I want to make sure I'm interpreting this correctly.

Example:

Hobbie

- R2-D6

- Proton Torpedoes

- Opportunist

If Hobbie has a TL on a defender (who has no tokens) at Range 2-3, do you state you want to use Opportunist (gain stress + 1 attack dice) first, then declare you want to use proton torpedoes so you spend the TL and remove the stress? So now you're attacking with 5 dice and no strees?

To take it one step further, you could always use Opportunist (if card criteria is met), and never take stress if you continue to take TL as an action?

Seems correct.

**Edit**
To expand on your build, Hobbie only needs to "acquire" or spend a target lock. So another ship passing a target lock to Hobbie would allow him to ditch a stress as well.

Opportunist resolves during roll attack dice (rulebook page 10). The use of secondary weapons is declared during declare target. So you remove TL first and declare opportunist second.

Edit:

If Hobbie uses TL during modify attack dice to reroll attack dice, his ability removes stress from opportunist.

According to the "Roll Attack Dice" section, the attacker may choose which weapon (primary or secondary) they wish to use during that step. Since both Opportunist and spending the Target Lock token for Proton Torpedoes would resolve during the same step, does the attacker not get to choose which order these resolve in?

The use of secondary weapons is declared during declare target.

This is incorrect. As ElJeffe points out, secondary weapons are declared during the Roll Attack Dice step.

This is the source for the Dark Curse v. Blaster Turret ruling, and my ongoing gripes about the paradox of turret upgrades. But it's also solidly confirmed that this is when it happens.

So I believe that ElJeffe has it correct - Hobbie could declare Opportunist, take the stress, then spend the lock for the Torpedo and clear the stress.

Nasty.

I finally got off my lazy @$$, and looked it up:

2. Roll Attack Dice
During this step, the attacker calculates how many
attack dice to use and then rolls the dice.
The primary weapon for each ship is its laser
cannons. The player rolls a number of attack dice
equal to the ship’s primary weapon value (the red
number shown on its Ship card and ship token).
Instead of attacking with its primary weapon, the
attacker may choose to use a secondary weapon
Upgrade card that his ship has equipped (see
“Upgrade Cards” on page 19).
The attacker resolves any card abilities that
allow him to roll additional (or fewer) dice.
Also, if he is targeting a ship at Range 1 with
his primary weapon, he rolls 1 additional
attack die.
After calculating the number of attack dice,
the attacker takes that number of red attack
dice and rolls them.
So it does confirm that you can declare Opportunist, take a stress and +1 attack die, then declare Proton Torpedoes, spend TL and lose Opportunist's stress. Sweet! Now to keep it my little secret...

I stand corrected.

Since both Opportunist and spending the Target Lock token for Proton Torpedoes would resolve during the same step, does the attacker not get to choose which order these resolve in?

In that case you declare that you roll an additional die before you declare what the die adds to. That sounds odd. But it could be.

rulebook page 10:

Instead of attacking with its primary weapon, the attacker may choose to use a secondary weapon Upgrade card that his ship has equipped (see “Upgrade Cards” on page 19).
The attacker resolves any card abilities that allow him to roll additional (or fewer) dice. Also, if he is targeting a ship at Range 1 with his primary weapon, he rolls 1 additional attack die.

The rule mentions the choice of weapons before resolving abilities to roll additional dice. I think this means you have to declare the secondary weapon before opportunist.

**Edit** Gah, FF! They mention the "adding attack dice" in both "Roll Attack Dice" and "Modify Attack Dice" sections.

Modify attack dice lets you add results or reroll dice. It does not allow you to roll an additional die.

But it also states under the FAQ:

Section 4: FAQ
GENERAL
Q: If a player has multiple effects that resolve at the same
time, can he resolve them in any order?
A: Yes.
Since both declaring a weapon and determining how many dice to roll occur in the same step, you can resolve them in any order.
But dvor, I did interpret it the way you stated until I read this FAQ question. If it was indeed a sequential step, I would think it would say "THEN attacker resolves any card abilities that allow him to roll additional dice".

In the same step and at the same time is not the same.

It probably would. So I agree.

While I cannot deny the usefulness of attacking with 5 dice, it seems a fairly complex (and situationally challenging by relying on the Opportunist and it's requirements) way to do it.

Not saying it would happen every round, but it might happen more often than you think.

1) Blocking with low PS ships (action denial)

2) Opponent lands on or moves through an obstacle (no action taken)

3) Opponent K-Turns

4) Higher PS ships spend their tokens before Hobbie attacks

5) Wes Janson's ability to remove a token after he attacks

If anything, it'll make your opponent less likely to K-turn or think twice about making aggressive maneuvers.

As ElJeffe points out, secondary weapons are declared during the Roll Attack Dice step.

Ooorrrrr maybe it's a good time to fix the Dark Curse/Blaster Turret ruling? <_<
