Because some people have this magical, mystical thing called "disposable income". I know, i know! It sounds outlandish. But believe it or not some people out there actually do still make more than "enough to almost afford both food AND gas". These rare and magnificent creatures tend to spend their money on things called "hobbies", and many of them enjoy painting models in just this fashion.
Silly me for wanting to put food in my kid's bellies..
I hope to have disposable income one day..
