So one of the things found in the new Huge Ship rules (in case you haven't read them or didn't catch this bit) is that a player can forfeit their placement of their 3 asteroids to instead use a Huge ship as an obstacle. It acts just like an asteroid, and is not controlled by a player (doesn't move, attack, etc.). I for one think this was a) really cool and b) really out of left field. I'd like to hear everyone's thoughts on the matter i.e. what you though, are you excite, what do you think some new tactical advantages will be of having them placed in this manner...
Huge obstacles
I think it is a cool concept. Something new to fly around and will mean new tactics are needed...
It also said only in casual tournaments. Not quite just like an asteroid. You bump it like a ship but take damage like an asteroid.
It would not surprise me if they reverse that "Casual Tournaments Only" if using the huge ships proves popular.

I doubt it. More likely they'll allow it if both players agree. But it alters the nature of the tournament.

Heh, especially if it proves to be a tactical advantage to place one... therefore they would be forcing even the hardcore tourney goers to get the epic ships.
What squads would this advantage?
Would TIE swarms be helped by placing a huge ship parallel to the side edge of the map, that way the rest of the playing field is more open?
Should a player going up against a TIE swarm place a huge ship perpendicular to the side edges of the map, right in the middle?
Why would I use a huge ship as an obstacle?
hmmmmm
" A Rebel Transport loaded with useful supplies, or Rebel plans/espionage, suffered a sudden loss of power/life support and is now drifting through space. It is the mission of both the Rebels and Empire to capture the vessel and retrieve the supplies/plans/espionage before their opponent can get their hands on them. "
I can see a few good homemade scenarios using the rules.
but under tournament situations, there is nearly no advantage to using the big ship as an obstacle, because your opponent cannot land on it.
compare to a normal asteroid. If your opponent lands his ships on the asteroid, he does the whole lose actions + roll a dice check, AND that ship may not attack this round. AND there's a chance that he would hit the asteroid again when flying away on the next round

Which means it functions like a great big wall in space, forcing ships to fly on certain vectors. Seems to me they could be very good for forcing ships into a joust or for screwing up a flanker, making them take extra turns to get past it. Also might combo well with bombs if you are preventing the opponent from turning away.

We all know FFG doesn't want to sell the Huge Ships......
Aye... I could see some serious strategy... plop it perpendicular to the setting up edge, in the middle of the field, and you've basically divided the mat in two... Or set it up 1/3 and now you can use it to protect your flank, and the edge to protect the other flank... And if you're faster than your opponent (interceptors come to mind) you can get around back and possibly on their tail...
It'll make for some seriously interesting quirks. I wasn't planning on carrying my GR-75 and CR-90 to the store every week, but I might have to now... Which means I have to rethink my storage solution..
I highly, highly doubt they are going to allow the huge ships to be used as obstacles in tournament formats.

How about this scenario. Rebel player puts a huge ship perpendicular in the play area. He only chooses slow maneuvers to force his opponent to bottleneck and fly around the huge ship. Intro Lt. Blount with Assault Missiles.
Anyone want to start a pool on how long it takes after these come out for someone to get one, cut it apart (two pieces?), dig out the inside to look like abandoned decks, and repaint it to look like a blasted out hulk? I'm thinking maybe a week, maybe two (depending on how long it takes them and how good they make it look).

You are what is right in this world.

I was considering it, but honestly, it is beyond my abilities currently.

If someone tried to play that garbage on me, I'd just fly circles until they came out the other side. If i have a bomber, I'd just play Proton Whack-a-Womprat when they pop out.

First person to do this has to post pics!
How long will it take for someone to LED the engines?
Honestly, I just don't see the point in spending $50 on a huge obstacle. Especially when you consider that you cannot use any of the abilities of the huge ship if you are using it as an obstacle. It would be different in a custom scenario if, as someone suggested the Transport was disabled mid - field, but could still use it's abilities to bolster it's allies, or if the Corvette could still take pot shots at the enemy while it is being "repaired". After 3- 5 rounds of Imps trying to destroy it, the engines come back online and it tries to flee the playing field under a fighter escort.
Well, I certainly see a point in spending 50 bucks and making use of them even when not directly playing with the ship.
Because some people have this magical, mystical thing called "disposable income". I know, i know! It sounds outlandish. But believe it or not some people out there actually do still make more than "enough to almost afford both food AND gas". These rare and magnificent creatures tend to spend their money on things called "hobbies", and many of them enjoy painting models in just this fashion.

Silly me for wanting to put food in my kid's bellies..
I hope to have disposable income one day..
