My first event. What list should I bring?

By Pirrekurr, in X-Wing

Hi there!

I have owned and bought X-wing since day one. But due to having no one Close by that is interested in the game I have maybe played 5-6 real games. I have had a lot of fun making the game rules easier and playing with my son, but now one of my neighbours have started to play.

This weekend he and I will go to Another city for our first real event.

So I am thinking about some different lists. Which one would be the easiest to play, and at the same time the most competative and fun. Three different criteria I know, but I want to win, have fun, and not play a list that is too wonky. My favourite ship is the B-wing, but these are the lists I am considering:

1. What I have seen called a Red Daggers list.

*Dagger Squadron with Advanced Sensors x2

*Red Squadron x2

2.

*Blue Squadron with Advanced Sensors x2

*Rookie Pilot with Proton Torpedoes x2

3.

*Omicron Group with Darth Vader

*Academy Pilot x3

*Obsidian Squadron x3

I can ask about your opinion on my friends two lists too. These are the ones he most often use and I think he will choose between them.

4.

*Blue Squadron x3

*Prototype Pilot x2

or

5.

*Captain Yorr with Darth Vader

*Saber Pilot with Push the Limit x3

We are both leaning towards our first lists (list no.1 for me and no.4 for him).

Which list should I choose? How can I make that list even better, or is it good as it is?

If you could tell us what expansions you have available?

I would say that you should go with your "gut feeling", and certainly don't go with the Lambdas unless you're really comfortable flying them.

Best of luck

Between us we have at least two of Everything.

I have:

2 Core sets.

1 extra X-wing

2 Y-Wings

2 A-Wings

1 HWK

1 YT-1300

2 B-Wings

2 extra Tie Fighters

1 Interceptor

1 Tie advanced

2 Tie Bombers

1 Firespray

1 Lambda

He has got at least that, probably more. We can borrow from each other and the only ship ever being a shortage of is the B-wing since we both really like it and sometimes ha wants 3 and I want 2, and we only have 2 each. But, they have a few B-wings for sale at the store where the event takes place.

I recommend you fly what you enjoy and what you are comfortable with!

As for what looks the strongest out of the ones you put up: I would say Red Daggers.

Good luck!

I like each of your top lists.

I'm not a fan of the torps on your second list. Another alternative in that vein would be 2x Blue w/ HLC and 2x rookies. It's fun and good but doesn't match up well with your Bloody Daggers list so just stick with that one.

In most events, I'm happy if I can break even wins-losses. Obviously, I'd rather do better, but a few wins make the day much happier for me.

With that in mind, think about the things that would counter your list and how likely you are to see much of them.

(I'm in my last tournament, I wanted to avoid big ships and Ints, so of course I saw 4 Lambdas and 7 Ints during the day)

List 1:

B's, X's, and Ints will all give you troubl, and any big ship with Gunner could be trouble.

List 2:

Same issues mostly, though PTs are great against low agi ships, so other Bs and big ships can be more manageable.

List 3:

X wings and Ints will be troublesome, and heaven forbid someone roll you with Assault Missiles or bombs.

I'll stop there and let you and your buddy discuss. Someone, somewhere on the forum rather innocuously said 'In Xwing, you get to choose your own weakness,' and I think it's a pretty good statement to take to heart. If, of listed weakness, you fly well against certain ships that might otherwise be an issue, than that list might slide to the top for me.

The Vader shuttle list can be very strong, for our Store Championship Tournament top 2 lists were vader shuttle lists.

Red daggers is a good list, it does spend 8 points on pilot skill, which is great against ps 2 opponents, but not so good against higher level stuff.

AABBB is another solid list.

Something to avoid B wings is XXXY

Garven

Dutch + ion turret

Red

Red

with the extra target lock and focus it is a very high damage list, and something you really want to joust with, so as long as you reember the abilities it is pretty easy to fly. Just point the guns at your opponent and roll lots of red dice. THe ion cannon is great against rebel lists, if you can get behind one of their ships and ion it then it will just fly forward, not being able to shoot while you destroy it.

I have been having fun with something similar BBXY

Garven

Dutch + Ion turret

Blue with fire control system

blue

bit slower, but again high damage.

It is tricky with Bs as you only have one shutle, and normally Bs go with advanced sensors which come on the lambda shuttle.

Classic han shoots first is also pretty easy to fly

Han solo + marksmanship + gunner + chewbacca crew

2x red squadron

You use chewbacca crew to negate the first bad crit you get. The reds are normally the first targets and han is a great closer as he does high damage.

In the end though it is fly something you enjoy. Most builds are resonably competetive. Stay away from 3 ship rebels which can be a bit fragile and get in more shots than your opponent and you should be fine.

like the others told u fly with ure guts feeling thats what i did on my first touarnement with my 6 tie fighter list. i fought mostly guys who mixed thier firesprays with some named tie pilots and a few rebels that relied on man shields but i beat em all ;P. its not always the list that win the matches

it is the skill u gained and gain through learning how to fly those lists. outsmarting ure opponents and etcetc i playtested over 15 lists before i was absolutely sure ;P

wich playstyle fits me well. if i like to go first or second if i mix ps skill from low to high if i stick with low or only high. again like the others told u guts feeling is the key

I'm in a similar boat. I've played less than 10 games total, but I'm planning on heading to my first tournament next weekend. I think I've made 5 lists I like, but I don't play enough to really know which one I'll love. For what it's worth, I like list #1 the best (I believe the phrase is Bloody Daggers), but it's popular enough that people will be expecting it. I find it difficult to not bring specific counters to tough lists, like Tie Swarms...

Easy list to do well with, Bounty hunter with mini tie swarm. Keep the mini tie swarm together and focus fire. The Bounty Hunter just needs to be close but not in formation with the ties.

#1 Rule concentrate your firepower

2, keep your actions

3. deny your opponent his/her actions.

Go with the list with which you are the most comfortable. Quality's not in the ships, but in how they're used.

Im a big fan of the red daggers (rains of castemere amirite guise? too soon?)

That or the OMG with vader and 6 ties.

However, from my years of tournament gaming, I can say the best list is almost always the one you feel the most comfortable with. An objectively worse list flown by someone who is familiar with all the ins and outs will do better than a better list flown by someone who isn't familiar with it.

Something I have had good luck with lately, that you may want to try, is

3x blue squadron with fire control system

1 smuggler with intelligence agent.

So. the event has been. I decided to play the Red Daggers list. my friend brought his BBBAA list.

The tournament was four fixed turns Swiss with 8 participating players.

1st round was vs a Lambda, Bomberx2 list. I won comfortably while only losing a single B-wing.

2nd round I met my friend. I played the worst I have ever played and he managed to beat me 100-0. I don't want to talk about it...

3rd round was vs a tie swarm with Dark Cirse and Howlrunner. Don't remember the exact composition. But I lost 1 X-wing.

So, I went into the 4th round being in 3rd Place. My friend was undefeated and had beaten the current 2nd, 3rd and 4th placed participants. So he got to play the current 5th placed player (Another friend of mine who was playing a 3 Omicron list). I got to play vs the current 3rd placed participant (Darth Vadder in an advanced with Saber Squadron, Alpha Squadron, 2 normal Ties, I think at least one was named). If I won I would get the 2nd place, if my opponent won 100-0 and my friend lost 100-0 my opponent won the whole event. If he won vs me he came 2nd.

I won while only losing 1 X-wing.

All in all a fun time and it was great that me and my friend finished 1st and 2nd. Although he will never stop reminding me of the 100-0 win he had vs me.
