I have been looking at some of the repaints that have been done and i'm thinking about doing some of my ships. I'm a pretty decent painter so I have the skills.
What I am wanting to know is if there is any reference material on the different paint jobs for the specific pilots, such as the firesprays and the rebel pilots. Are these just descriptions in the novels or are they just designed by the guys painting their ships?

There are lots of photos of the models used during filming on that site, including great photos of a few individual Red Squadron X-Wings on the 3rd page. Many here have used them as a reference for painting up their X-Wings.

There's also here for Bacta Wars X wings. Note that this is just a persons interpretation of what they look like based on the books descriptions, but has kinda become the "go to" look.
