Katarn? Confused!

By Space Monkey, in X-Wing

Hi All,

I've owned a HWK for quite some time now but not had a chance to play it yet (we don't get to play often, sadly).

Now, I have been reading this thread:

http://community.fantasyflightgames.com/index.php?/topic/104238-the-little-hwk-that-could/

...and I've seen mention of Katarn having multiple Focus tokens on himself. I've had a look at both Katarn's pilot card and the Moldy Crow title card and I still cant seem to understand how he ends up with multiple Tokens.

As I understand it he starts with a Focus token at the start of the game which he can play as his action as per the normal rules. At the start of the combat phase he may choose to give this token to another friendly ship at range 1-3 (I'm still with this so far).

If I choose to assign the Focus token to myself but don't actually use it then, as per Moldy Crows ability, I just keep it there and can therefore use my action to Target Lock instead, thus having both Focus and TL active at the same time... ...but are you telling me that I can choose to use ANOTHER Focus action even though he already has a Focus token in play?

This may sound like a stupid question, but I just wanted to get that straight. I would have always played it that, as his ship already has a Focus token he may only choose TL. Has this rule been clarified by FFG or is it just assumed this is how it works by the community at large?

If it is indeed correct then I'm saddened that I haven't been using this ship sooner!

Thanks in advance for the input!

Edit: Also, if Katarn is Stressed, does he get to keep all the tokens he has in play?

Recon specialist lets you get 2 focus tokens whenever you do the focus action. So along side the moldy crow, those focus tokens dont dissapear at the end of the round. So kyle can accumulate quite alot of focus tokens

Wow. I gotta get this guy into a game!

Thanks Eyeless1.

Ya, and then use Garvin in the X wing who can pass on focus tokens.

Last night I had Kyle getting 3 per turn, and at one point had 11 on him.

It was good because he was using the Blaster Turret which need a focus to use, and he would pass on another at start of combat, and when he attacks he had a focus to use

This, and he was ionized for 3 turns but still had lots of tokens to use lol.

If you take a focus action you get a token. If you don't use it or pass it and have the moldy crow card it stays on and you're next focus action gives you another token. If you have Recon Specialist you get two tokens every time you focus and it follows the same pattern. If garven Dreis passes you a focus you can keep that too, allowing a ton of focus buildup(at highish cost.)

From there you can also use those tokens while stressed, as using a token isn't an action, only getting one(or two) via a focus action.)

You're missing some of the functionality of tokens. He doesn't start the game with any tokens.

If you take a focus action you get a token. If you don't use it or pass it and have the moldy crow card it stays on and you're next focus action gives you another token. If you have Recon Specialist you get two tokens every time you focus and it follows the same pattern. Biggs

R2-f3

Stealth device

Garven Dreis

R2-d2

Shield upgrade

Kyle Katarn

Moldy Crow

Blaster Turret

Recon spec

Opportunist

Actually works quite well.

Biggs can use the R2 unit to get extra Def dice and Kyle can pass him a focus.

Along with garven to pass tokens to whoever.

Make biggs very hard to kill

Sadly it was late and getting tired I made some mistakes, but at one point biggs had 6 Def dice. (or would have had I not miscounted) was at range 3 and through an asteroid.

The thing is, you can't use one action twice in a turn from any source (free actions, ptl, so on), but tokens are not actions, neither is playing a token, Kyle can use any tokens he has any way he sees fit as long as he doesn't break that rule.

Also, your post makes me wonder if you are misusing Focus tokens in other ways as well. Quickly:

At the end of the round, any unused Focus tokens go away. The exception of course is the Moldy Crow title card that allows you to keep them.

There are no limits to the number of tokens you can have on one ship, with the exception of Target Lock (most ships can only have one Blue target lock token, the Weapons Engineer allows you to have two).

You can only take a particular action once per turn, but you can take that action whether or not you have the corresponding token. For example, if for some reason you already had a Focus token on your ship (kept with Moldy Crow, given to you by Garven or Kyle, etc.) you could still take a Focus action.

That makes much more sense. Thanks for all your replies, fellow forumites!

try this fun hawk build

kyle katarn-moldy crow-recon specialist-blaster turret

roark garnet-blaster turret-chewbacca

rookie pilot x2.

kyle collects tokens, passes 1 per turn, roark gives one of your ships ps 12 in range 3 and chewwy keeps roark alive a bit longer. the focus can be passed to roark if he already got one then he use it to complement his turret or you pass to the ps12 rookie who should have a target lock on foe.
