Regionals first round bye?

By Morgan Reid, in X-Wing

G'day all,

New to the game and was lucky enough to pick up a Store Champs win with the associated Regionals first round bye (if I use it..).

Question for the experienced tourney players: Is it much of an advantage and worthwhile using? I'm keen to do well in the Regionals but we all play because we enjoy the game so choosing not to play just for a free 'win' seems odd.

Basically just after advice on the mechanics of X-Wing tourneys and the benefits/downsides of using the bye.

Thanks!

If you use it you get 5 points and SoS higher then is actually possible from that opponent.

If you don't you could get 5 points, or 3, or 1, or 0. But you will never get that high of SoS.

If the event is doing a Top Cut, making that Top Cut would get you more games then not. Using the Bye gives you the best round result possible.

There are tournaments, and then there are tournaments . Some are the equivalent of Friday Night Magic, weekly events for casual players who just enjoy playing the game. Then there are events for "serious" players, where people go with the express intent to win. I don't see a disadvantage to receiving a bye, unless you simply cannot abide that sort of competitive atmosphere.

why don't you use your bye, and then find another player with a bye to play against during the first round?

Thanks all, appreciate the explanations and advice. Good idea Magadizer!

Cheers

I dislike the bye simply because it removes you from playing a game. Now if competition is your sole purpose, I can see the appeal but I don't share your enthusiasm.

Megadizer definitely has the answer though, use your bye and play a friendly warm up game vs another bye holder.
