A question came up about items that happen prior to the combat phase. Two items in particular. Colonel Jendon and the future Wingman card. Both say that the talent listed takes place at the start of the combat phase. the question being is that at the start of the general combat phase or at the start of the particular units combat phase.

At the start of Combat Phase is at the start of the general combat phase.
Other examples: Swarm Tactics, Kyle Katarn's pilot ability.

Individual units do not get their own combat phases. They get Attack steps

The start of the Combat phase is when every player is ready to combat after all maneuvers are done. So before the pilot with the highest PS makes his attack, you declare the Wingman card, Colonel Jendon's ability, Swarm Tactics, Squad Leader etc etc. at this time.
