If you watch that sequence carefully, you see an exterior shot of an asteroid hitting a star destroyer, and destroying the entire command tower. Then the shot switches to the bridge of the Executor, and a series of holo displays showing various Imperial captains. One of them cowers in fear and disappears, apparently because his command tower was just destroyed. Its pretty fast, and most people never notice it.

Also think of him picking up the Emperor getting himself electrocuted which kills him minutes later to perform the attack. Vader commits like no one else when he wants to attack.

Or just picture him throwing his lightsaber through the hull of his ship to hit the other ship and then it boomerangs back to him making another hole

Maybe he is hurling a force attack that damages the ship he is on but is focused on the enemy's cockpit or engine.

How about the Chewbacca crew card. Is Chewbacca put into a missile tube and fired off to take a hit head on and his sacrificial blood coats his ship and increases the shield by one point? Because Chewbacca no longer is around after that.

He was a brave lad; fixed the hull while the ship was still flying. Regrettably we couldn't convince him to take a EV suit; he said just a simple gas mask would do. He will be missed.

Maybe Thrawn can be a combo of Intelligence Officer and NAvigator all in one since he was always a step ahead of his opponents.

Quick, make a list of all the ships that Vader was on at some point or another and DIDN'T get destroyed later. The "how" isn't all that important, he's a creative mofo.
