There seems to be a growing segment of the X-Wing community with a preconceived notion on how to deal with stress. A portion of players whom have a stressed pilot automatically set the dial to the green maneuvers. After all we want our actions and stress simply denies us this. It's here where I find the flaw and some peoples strategy. A white maneuver that'll give you superior placement is sometimes better than clearing the stress. By going automatically to the green maneuvers you make yourself predictable for your opponent and thus easier to to gain the upper hand. A stressed-out ship outside of the firing arc of your enemy, is superior to having a ship with an action sitting inside your enemies firing. So where is your head at if you have a ship that is stressed out do you automatically assigned a green maneuver?
Stress or not stressed?
More often than not I try to clear the stress, but it is quite situational. I agree it's better to be stressed and unattackable, particularly if I can get a shot in anyway, than to get an action and then be focus fired without being allowed to shoot back so it didn't matter. It's all about the context.
It's certainly a difficult assessment. So many of us automatically take the green, as you've said, particularly when the stress comes from Push the Limit rather than from a maneuver.
It is difficult to master this divide, as it is a question of Tactics rather than Strategy, and we've not really been able to discuss them yet.
It may be just me, but I see alot of people saying "action, action, action" and I know that they do have a point. But I would much rather be in a better position and have stress than get rid of it and risk getting shot at.
It's definitely situational. Taking a white maneuver just to try and be unpredictable can be even worse than taking the predictable move if you still end up under fire with no focus or evade tokens to protect you.
I generally try not to stress ships at all unless they have enough green moves to keep them mobile when stressed or when removing the stress doesn't expose them to unnecessary risk
I have to say in my early games I have fallen into this trap, especially when playing Luke with Artoo. The urge to combine a green manoeuvre to get rid of stress and regain a shield overrides all thoughts of a better tactical move
its situational. I generally try to clear the stress, but if a white move will put me in a better position (out of fire arc) then I might try that. It all depends on the situation.
I've flown a squint with stress for 3 turns, just because the option to shoot, and not be shot, was preferable to the green and stress removal.. it is purely situational.
