General Rules Question

By player2142998, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Hi all,

I am new to AGOT lcg. A while back when I was researching about this game I remember reading on a forum a specific difference between this and MTG but cannot remember which way the answer went. The basic idea, and where people coming over from MTG mess up on, is when it comes to doing or not doing various things in the game; In one game 'you can unless a rule specifically says you can't'. In the other, 'you can't unless a rule specifically says you can'. Can someone clarify, assuming this is the case, which is which? Thanks for any help!

Well, it's a little confusing because it can depend on what part of an effect you're looking at. For this game in general:

- If you are looking at a RESTRICTION, particularly targeting or timing, unless a card specifically SAYS you can't do something, you can. A prime example of this is that if a card is kneeling, it can still use all of its abilities and/or effects - unless the card specifically says otherwise (or you have to kneel the card as part of the cost). Many people come from other games assuming that if a card is knelt/tapped, it automatically "turns off" its abilities.

- If you are looking at an EFFECT, particularly one that changes a card status, unless a card specifically SAYS to do something, you don't do it. A good example of this is that in order to participate in a challenge in this game, a character has to kneel. Many people from other games assume that if you stand a character that is attacking, it would no longer be attacking (and vice versa - if you remove the attacker during the challenge, it automatically stands). But because of that "unless it SAYS to do something, you don't do it" rule of thumb, unless the standing effect says to remove the attacker (or the removal effect says to stand the attacker), they are completely separate.

That probably doesn't help too much. The second one is the much more important rule of thumb - and the one I really think you're looking for here.

Ktom,

That is actually more detailed than I had hoped for. Thank you so much for the info!!
