X-Wing: Rebel Transport Expansion Pack are off the boat

By Boomer_J, in X-Wing

I don't know what the question is. The new tournament rules states that stuff is legal once they are announced (ie posted on the website), unless otherwise specifically stated. Since the transport is not dropping in the middle of Regionals, I don't see it's contents being banned.

I don't know that there's a question, per se, just that we don't know if they're going to change how they handle it. Historically, there's been at least a few weeks before they whitelisted a new product for competitive play. How much of that was intentional delay, and how much of that was "We'll get around to updating the tournament document at some point" we're really not sure. It's entirely possible we'll see a release-day ban update, with it coming off at some point two weeks (or more) later.

If there is a regional on May 3rd, it might be interesting. I'd be very uncomfortable with saying that three days before the event doesn't introduce some potential issues with availability. I can't say if FFG agrees, but I'm far more concerned about equal availability for people in a given event than I am different events being played with different availability. Give it 2-3 weeks after release so everyone has an opportunity to get their hands on it, then make it legal.

Exactly. I'm planning on attending one of the May 3 regional events and have an existing pre-order for the transport from a FOGS--if the 30th is really the release date, I think there's a very slim chance my pre-order will arrive in time (especially since the regional is six hours away and I'll need to travel the day before). Do I cancel my pre-order? Do I try to find some FLGS en route that has a copy? Do I need to playtest with the ships or without them? When will all the cards be spoiled?

They still allow the various LCG packs to be legal. And they've tended to allow them in the middle of tournament seasons. And quite honestly, the LCG's need more time to adjust and build decks for than it does to prepare to use new pilots or upgrades. As of right now, I would plan on the Transport stuff being legal.

Given how long it took Imperial Aces to get here (and the whine-fest that accompanied the waiting), I suspect FFG chose to wait to announce that the ships were on a boat. They've probably been in transits for several weeks already.

~ 6000 nm between coasts and merchant ships go roughly 12 knots that's about 8 days. However, you gain a day crossing the international dateline eastbound so anywhere between 8-10 days is a good rough estimate for direct 'slow boat from China' travel. Could be done?

I suppose that's not unreasonable, but it doesn't go very far to explain why IA took 8 weeks.

Even when the "slow boat" arrives, that does not mean it is headed right into port. Many times the vessels wait days to have a local pilot take them into port. Unloading can take days also. etc.. etc... lots of delays....

There are six regionals on May 3, actually: three in the U.S., two in the U.K. and one in Australia. And there are four more regionals the following weekend:

May 3: Bellevue, NE; Monroeville, PA; Pearland, TX; Dublin, U.K.; Milton Keynes, U.K.; Fairview Park, Australia

May 9: Sharq, Kuwait

May 10: Aldershot, U.K.

May 11: Sydney, Australia; Odense, Denmark

So the late release of the Rebel Transport could really affect these tournaments.

Again, as per the tournament rules, for those outside the U.S., the TO can make the determination of whether something is legal or not. However, the non-epic stuff will be legal for Regionals. It doesn't matter that it is releasing 3 days before the first regionals. Considering that the new big box expansion for Netrunner is also releasing at a similar time frame, and will have a much, much bigger impact in terms of meta shift and required playtesting than in this game, I don't see what all the complaints are about.

I'm not entirely sure anyone's complaining. We're merely questioning your sense of absolute declaration.

Because whatever the comparison between X-wing and the various LCGs is, the fact is that as of last week, newly released models were NOT legal. Someone going to a Store Championship on the 12th would not have been able to use the Imperial Aces.

So your assertion that they'll treat X-wing the same as the LCGs ring a little hollow, because they have been treating X-wing differently than the LCGs. Everything you point out about how much more impact the LCGs get with a new expansion was just as true last month, and they still held availability until weeks after release. The question at hand is whether the change in how the tournament rules present it is a functional change which will allow models to be used on Day One, or whether it's simply a bookkeeping adjustment with no real substance.

So unless you know something we don't (and if you do, I hope you'll poke whatever dev is passing you info to share it with the rest of us) I don't believe anyone can answer that question, including you.

Meh. I pre-ordered the entire Wave in one order. It won't ship until it's all released so I'll not be getting mine any time soon... :(

I guess it's a question on whether you think they will update the rules up to 2 weeks after they just released the new version. It's not being released in the middle of a tournament season. I don't think it is wrong to assume the Transport contents will be legal. If FFG isn't worried about lack of time a product is available for other games, I'm not sure why they would be concerned with this game.

Considering they already covered that the Store Championships and Regionals will be just the Dogfighting format, and not of the 2 other formats, one already added into the rules with this update, I think it is safe to say they already thought ahead.

By the letter of the new rules, you can expect new model to be tournament legal upon receipt. Nearly moot discussion in a thread about an epic model.

They really whipped those rowing pple on the boat in shape to get it there after the fail that was imp aces!

"Manny rowe... erm.. Bothans died to get us this so fast..."

:D

Why is it moot? The set contains four new X-wing pilots and a pile of new upgrade cards, potentially including even more that are legal for the 100 point format and which haven't even been spoiled.

While I appreciate the perspective from the LCG point of view, there are some differences. First, as has already been noted, X-wing has been treated differently to date. Second, from my experience playing FFG LCGs, they seem to have more uniform distribution--considering people will be traveling 6+ hours for regionals, I don't feel comfortable at all with predicting that everyone will have access to these new gameplay items, especially given that this is the first huge ship and there seem to already be reports that they'll have insufficient stock in the first shipment. And third, the LCG is fundamentally different in that the meta is constantly evolving due to the monthly release framework--new ships being released in X-wing is a big deal.

Just to be clear, my intention is not to whine or complain--I just want to know if I need to cancel my pre-order and plan to face these dastardly new pilots :)

Where have you heard this?

Except the rules are now in line with how they treat the LCG. I highly doubt they are going to release an update for tournaments that start in a few weeks. If they felt it would be an issue, the Transport probably would've been banned already. As is, plan on the transport stuff being legal.

I feel bad for Fel's Wrath. It was his wingman. Nothing like getting a callsign just referring to somebody else. Way to stand out.

It's really sad, because Fel's Wrath can't even take "Wingman"

Forum comments (see, e.g., the prior page of this thread).

I better save my pennies fast. With The Rebel Transport coming out and the Android Netrunner Honor & Profit expansion due roughly the same day I'm gonna be broke.

Yes, yes it will be. Add in the new Force Pack for SWLCG, it is an expensive few weeks.

I say moot discussion because the new tournament rules clearly include all FFG x wing products save those marked as epic.

As it is written, so shall it be.

If someone wants to field the transport for 70 points and have enough for maybe 1 fighter they can be my guest haha. The transport has no real weapons beside the upgrades like slicer and what not. Basically I don't see the transport being fielded in tournaments unless they use the cinematic play in which case they would need to increase points available otherwise the transport is a sitting wompa haha

Umm, the Transport isn't legal for the standard 100pt Dogfight format. They are only legal for Epic tournaments. That, and they start at 30pts. Nothing I've seen seems to indicate that you are going to be able to double it's points. It just doesn't have enough upgrade slots.

Isn't the transport divided into fore and aft sections? So 30 PTs for the fore section and 30 PTs for aft. Otherwise it's pretty much a falcon or shuttle with 12 hp. It would need at least double that since it's a way bigger ship no?

Nope, only one card and one set of HP. It is separated into Fore and Aft, but that is primarily for the Reinforce action and Crits.

The corvette is divided into two sections, but not the transport.

It is divided into 2 sections but maybe just for damage then?
