Onslaught at Arda I

amazing, people hate the Mass combat rules or arguing about it before it is even published

I'm not saying i hate them. I haven't seen them.

I merely question the necessity of rule bloat in a system that is ostensibly rather rules-light, where existing mechanics cover the broad scope of battle pretty well, assuming the PCs are in leadership roles (and if the PCs are not in such roles, the overall outcome should be plot-based, modified by the players' actions, not solved with capricious dice rolls of NPC vs NPC).

I think any rules provided that are not a part of the Core Rulebook (and even many of those IN the CRB) can be viewed as wholly optional. These are to provide some new options for those that really want them. As far as managing bloat, I think the entire concept of mass combat rules is to reduce bloat during large-scale battles. The rules only exist to streamline and speed up what could otherwise require homebrewing or a lot of work on the GM's part.

There are already two different sets of forthcoming rules announced that address "mass combat," the Arda mass combat rules, and the squad and squadron rules announced with the AOR GM Kit. If you decide you don't care for one, you might like the other, or you might find that minion groups and addressing everything narratively on your own as the GM works for your table.

The only thing you need to play this game, really, is a CRB and a set of dice or the app. And even then, if you are familiar with the rules, you kind of don't even need the CRB after a while. I rarely open mine at the table. Everything else is wholly optional.

I don't think anyone's hating it, yet. Nor are we arguing about it, but it's going to happen.

KRK,

All of that there, that you just wrote. If everyone would accept these truths the internet would implode, but I certainly agree whole-heartedly.

I'm curious - what do you see that is currently slowed down in big battle scenes? What home-brew rules do you think have been needed or used?

So excited for this to be announced! I hope you all like it. I was the author and I am so excited to see it in print to kick off Age of Rebellion!

Hiyas!

Congrats! This adventure looks wizard. I was wondering how many more installments of the "Onslaught series" will be published & are all gonna be written by you?

Thanks!

I think Arda I is the name of a moon, like Yavin IV.

At least it isn't just called "Forest Moon" of the planet Endor. Was Endor a gas giant? I can't remember

Arda 1 is actually in the same sector as Yavin, the Gordian Reach. However it is one of three planets named Arda 1-3 in the Arda system.

I'm not sure if what type of planet Endor was actually got explained but I believe the ROTJ novelization stated that Endor had been destroyed long before the Original Trilogy.

I hate rules bloat as much or more than the next guy, but I'm glad to be getting two different options for mass combat. I don't like combat to drag on forever, and now we will hopefully be able to adjust to scale easily and play any battle without taking all night to do it.

Hiyas!

Duh! Dark side take me!

Thanks!

I think Fantasy Flight deserves the benefit of the doubt, seeing how they've nailed it and then some so far. I am chomping at the bit to get my hands on the mechanic.

I've been seriously hyped for AoR lately. All these releases, using the beta rules again during a mini campaign.

There's going to be some crazy battles to look forward to in the near future.

I know we constantly clamor for more, but even with the EotE releases thus far there is enough content for multiple different campaigns.

I noticed it was updated as of yesterday and listed 'at the printers' now.

Endor was the gas giant, and the forest moon was only ever given the name of Sanctuary Moon in the movies. In RotJ it's referred to as the forest moon of Endor, implying it's around Endor, and the Emperor calls it by name as the Sanctuary Moon. The script specifically gives it the name Sanctuary Moon on several occasions (with that capitalization) and it's spoken in the movie (but often missed.)

Thanks. I completely missed that and I've seen RotJ dozens of times.

I've been rereading the Introduction to Star Wars book dealing with a d6 campaign based on Edan and now this is announced! :D

Wow Christmas has come early!

Seriously looking forward to this!

I've been running the Introductory Adventure Game for my kids. I must admit that this has been the easiest game to introduce role-playing to young players. We are having a great time battling snow tigers and Imperial Scout Troopers.

If anyone is at all curious about the West End Games version of Star Wars Role-playing, this boxed set is well worth your time, money and consideration.

Regarding other systems with Mass Combat rules that may or may not suck, I rather liked the Savage Worlds mass combat rules, and the one time I actually used them in a game, it worked pretty well for what we wanted it to do.

I have to agree with you there. The West End Games version of Star Wars is quite possibly the best box set intro rpg of all time.

It came complete with a good introductory campaign that could take many sessions to play through.

Hi people! One text interpretation doubt.

When they refer to Mass-Combat rules, they refer to the existing ones that already are on GM chapter I think or that they will create a new more detailed mass-combat ruleset?

Thanks!

I believe the ones in the GM screen are tactical and the ones in Arda will be more strategic or at least larger than squad scale.

Thank you 2P51! :D

I made a temporal home made rule. I really want to see those rules... and Rebelion, and Performer book... and Force &... XD
