squad idea

By Red Castle, in X-Wing

Hiya fellas! I'm making some squads for a tournament I'm organising where all the squads will be distributed randomly across the players, and I'm trying to make one with the HWK-290 so he can have some love. Part of this tournament is so players can get out of their comfort zone and try something else. Might find something they love and didn't think about. I'm lending all the miniatures so, it makes squad building a good exercise. One thing I noticed is that the HWK don't see a lot of table time around here so, I thought about this team. I would like to know if it would be competitive or what would you do to make it so. Other ideas involving the HWK also work.

Jan Ors+Swarm Tactics+Blaster Turrets+Recon Specialist

Wedge+Push the Limit+R2 unit

Biggs+R2D2+Shield Upgrade

So, would it be fun to play? Does it have a chance? Any help would be appreciated.

I really like using

Wedge + PtL + R2 + EU (37 points)

Luke + DTF + R2-D2 + EU (37 points)

Jan + Determination (26 points)

100 total

I am generally Leary of three ship rebel builds when one of the ships is not a falcon. The last time I flew hawk I had it in an all turrets list with chewie and a y wing.

If you go with Roark, chewie and a gold you will have 21 points left to be obnoxious with, turrets, the reco op, barrel rolls, engine upgrades.. So many irritating possibilities.

Not giving the HWK a turret seems strange, especially in a three ship build, it really worked? I just feel like you lose too much fire power to not at least pay 4-5 points for a turret of some sort.

Pairing it with a Falcon sounds nice and something I can consider. Maybe join Jan and Chewie + another. I love the idea of giving the Falcon 4 attack dice.

Going to sleep now, I'll look into it in the morning.

Thanks!

Yea naked Jan 3 ship builds are just asking for trouble. As long as you can survive the onslaught long enough to take out the two heavy hitters, Jan can't fight back.

Actually any naked Jan builds for that matter are pretty dumb IMO. Spending 25 points for 1 extra attack dice a turn? Totally not worth it.

Yeah it's been real dumb when my opponent sees what she does and has gone after her first almost everytime....only to be chewed up by a pair of extemely maneuverable X-Wings thanks to EU. Her for 26 points is as good of a decoy as a Doomshuttle.

To me any hawk without a turret is a bad idea.

Jan Ors+Swarm Tactics+Blaster Turrets+Recon Specialist

Wedge+Push the Limit+R2 unit

Biggs+R2D2+Shield Upgrade

Not something I'd really look forward to playing. To me you have FAR too many points on Biggs because you KNOW he is likely to go down fast and hard; he's the primary target and when you see R2D2 you also see a ship you want to take out before it regains too many points of shields. I'm also not a fan of kitting Jan out that way. Swarm Tactics quickly becomes useless as Biggs dies. Then you need to remember that her ability requires taking Stress which the HWK isn't really good at dumping; Stress is especially bad her because you NEED Focus token to fire the Blaster Turret and there are plenty of ways to deny her that.

Bjorn's Wedge/Luke/Jan really doesn't have enough on Jan to make me happy there. I'd really like to put an Ion Turret on her so she would have some teeth while still providing some support.

If you look around you will see a number of squads that use a HWK and even a few where it is an important part of it. Have you looked at some of the Kyle/Garven/Dutch synergies? The Rebel Operative is sometimes used as a turret ship when points are too tight for a Y-Wing. I've seen some squads that utilize Roark to push someone's shooting up a lot higher than normal; that same squad also has an Ace with Squad Tactics to boost another generic's PS or give you two PS 12 shooters if that is what is needed.

If you want them out of their comfort zone, how about this?

Roark, Ion, Shield Upgrade

3 x GSP, Swarm Tactics

There are still 9 points left over to buff up Roark and it might not be necessary to give three GSP's ST, two will suffice leaving one EPT unfilled.

We brake for nobody.

I'd add Nien Nunb to Jan to help with dumping stress. Changing that red four straight to a green helps a lot.

I've seen and thought about Kyle/Garven/Dutch but the problem here is that Garven/Dutch is so obvious that it already sees a lot of table time. I might go with it if there is nothing else. Although I really like the idea suggested about mixing the Falcon and Jan, maybe add an A-Wing to the lot.

Chewie+Draw their Fire+Gunner+Falcon

Jan+determination+Ion turret+Recon Specialsit

Prototype A-Wing

Concerning the first squad I proposed, it was inspired by a Wedge/Luke/Biggs build but switching Luke for Jan. I thought that 360 arc would compensate for the lack of maneuvrability and that Recon specialist would help in defense for the occasional shot. Swarm tactic is because I didn't knew what to do with those 2 points left. Maybe switch the blaster turret for a Ion turret for control and give determination instead of swarm tactics for a little more survivability.

Good idea about Nien, completely forgot about him.

How about this variant?

-Chewbacca+Draw their Fire+Falcon title

-Jan Ors+Ion turret+Nien Nunb

-Blue Squadron Pilot+Advanced Sensor
