I am sure this has been asked before, but I am trying to get clarification for a player.

It says on page 8 of the rulebook a player may measure to see if his ship can preform a barrel roll before committing to this action.

My question is if a player wants to preform a barrel roll to the left and places the template down on the table and nothing would obstructe the barrel roll can he still decide to pick the template up and do a barrel roll to the right?

This is all covered in the FAQ, but no. You declare the direction you intend yo go, then measure, and if you can fit at all you have to roll.

On the plus side, if you can't fit in the direction you want to go, you aren't forced to go the other direction.

That is what I thought. I was told in a tournament by the TO that the rulebook said you can pre-measure a barrel roll. I told him you couldn't, but he allowed it anyway. I tried to show him in my printed FAQ that you measure to see if you can fit...if you can it has to be done...if not you don't have to preform a barrel roll at all and pick another action.

Yeah, the rule as it is worded in the book is very...loose, and before today the clarification in the FAQ was hard to find and easy to miss, but if you had it to show him he should have done it right.

I would hope that after today it won't be a problem since the new FAQ is much clearer on the issue.

There's also a notable contingent of players out there who simply refused to accept the tighter rules, for any number of reasons. I expect with the new FAQ they'll declare all their tournaments Casual, while those who have adapted to the tighter rules will tend towards Competitive, even in friendly events.

I'd honestly much rather just have one standard, but at the very least you should be able to know going in what to expect.

But spending Focus tokens is so enjoyable....
