What else is there?

By polmoneys, in X-Wing

I'm all into 3 ship squads where hypermobile Ibitsam (PTL+EU) is the MVP with Wedge alongside removing stealth devices and working as a Biggs for her.

3rd ship is is where I request your advice. In the future It will be Tycho...

I've flown Jan Ors + Ion + Nien Numb. Nice results but fragile, never faced a swarm with it...looks like a lost cause.

Then Luke came to mind. I've been using him with R2D2 and shield upgrade, crazy style crossing asteroids to get better shots and recovering shields all day long. It gives a sense of tankiness Jan Ors will never provide and suddenly the prospect of facing a swarm feels doable.

Is there any other pilot/ship I should consider?

Along Hypermobile Ibtisam and Wedge?
First off, DEFINITELY spend 3 more points to grab an Advanced Sensors on Ibbi. That increases her mobility way more than PTL does, as it lets you boost/barrel roll before doing your maneuvers, changing the distance from them drastically, particularly the red ones.

That being said, I'd analyze where your fleet excels, and where its weak, and how to plug those holes.

Excellences :

  • Wedge and Ibtisam both have great and consistent Damage.
  • Wedge and Ibtisam are both fairly late in the Pilot-Skill game.
  • Ibtisam particularly is brilliant at mobility. Wedge with an Engine Upgrade and/or Expert Handling can catch up moderately well.
  • Wedge and Ibtisam have fairly low survivability variance: It doesn't matter how terribly you roll defensively, you'll survive quite a few shots.

Weaknesses :

  • Wedge and Ibtisam are only 2 ships for their points (Expensive and Out-gunnable).
  • Wedge and Ibtisam are fairly easily focused down by Swarm or Alpha-Strike strategies.

So: what do we do?

If we improve Wedge's mobility, and give wingmen of a kind, we can cut the fragility factor with a well-planned Asteroid Thicket.

Alternatively, we need to either stuff more than one ship into the third slot (Potentially Possible), provide an end-game monstrosity (like Luke with R2-D2), or a way of improving their tankinesses (like Biggs).

As far as the "Stuffing 2 ships into the slot" option, we'd need to cut PtL or Advanced Sensors off of Ibtisam to even purchase 2x Prototype Pilots. This option is out.

That failing, I'm liking Luke with R2-D2, which lands you at 99 points (after adding Adv. Sensors on Ibtisam).

I'd consider pitching 3 points worth of upgrade OFF of Ibtisam, to provide Wedge with Push the Limit and an R2-Astromech for a 100 point fleet, and greatly increasing his damage.
Alternatively, you could give him Expert Handling for a mobility boost, alongside that same Astromech, for a 99 point fleet, or a 100 point fleet if you give Luke Draw Their Fire.

So that leaves me with 3 variations:

Ibtisam

+ PtL + Engine Upgrade + Advanced Sensors

Wedge Antilles

+ 0

Luke Skywalker

+ R2-D2 + Draw Their Fire

I btisam

+ Engine Upgrade + Advanced Sensors

Wedge Antilles

+ R2 Astromech + Push the Limit

Luke Skywalker

+ R2-D2

Ibtisam

+ Engine Upgrade + Advanced Sensors

Wedge Antilles

+ R2 Astromech + Expert Handling

Luke Skywalker

+ R2-D2 + Draw Their Fire

You should try Dutch for the free target locks while everyone else is going for mobility, something like this

Wedge Antilles

-R2 D2

-Expert Handling

Ibtisam

-System Upgrade

-Push the Limit

-Engine Upgrade

Dutch Vander

-Blaster turret

100 points

or swap out ptl on ibtisam for veteran instincts so the system upgrade is more useful to you and give dutch an r2 astromech and an ion cannon

I used this build once and it seemed to work well. We didn't get to finish the game but I believe I would have won.

Ibtisam

Opportunist

Auto blasters

Wedge

Swarm tactics

Blue squadern

Heavy laser canon

Its not a bad squad if flown right, though your pretty screwed of you get focus fired early one, but the high ps,and wedge with swarm tactics is to hopefully to prevent that.

Pretty straight forward.

Keep wedge and the bs pilot in back and focus fire. If they don't kill anything then hopefully Ibtisam will.

If Ibtisam gets in range one you use Wedge and bs pilot to hopefully strip any focus or evades and hopefully use opportunist and get 4 dice with auto blasters which would be sick with a focus our tl.

Before someone says to take off auto blasters, the whole reason for this was I wanted to see is i could find a good way to user Ibtisam with them as it seems that they kind of go hand in hand.

I think that is what the devs were thinking when they came up with it

The problem I find with PTL on B wings is they don't have many green maneuvers, so I wonder how useful it will be.

Opportunist may or may not be just as useful but getting that extra attack dice with attacks that can't be blocked by dice is almost a guaranteed kill or if anything crippling.

B wings are meant to be close range fighters.

So who does your opponent kill?

Wedge who reduces their defense dice?

The b wing who is going to snipe with 4 attack dice ASAP?

Or Ibtisam who the first couple of rounds may not seem as the biggest threat on the board?

If I was flying against this I really don't know who is want to kill first. I guess Ibtisam, but like I mentioned, the first round he likely won't be in range one, so is he really that important?

HER, HER, HER, HER!!!!!!!!

Lol ya I know. I just always find myself saying him

I do the same with scarlet

+ PtL + Engine Upgrade + Advanced Sensors

Wedge Antilles

+ 0

Luke Skywalker

+ R2-D2 + Draw Their Fire

This I like. once on the path of 3 ships squads those 38 points no longer look expensive. Wedge like Biggs, naked. thanks!

Dutch Vander

-Blaster turret

isn't this wrong? he needs focus to use turret...

As far as support ships imo Jan Ors' mobile (range 3, 'when attacking') die > TL (hello action denial)

forward 2 + BR + Boost will take her anywhere!

This is a Wave 4 list, so it's entirely dependant on whether you buy into that:

The core:

Ibtisam, Predator, Advanced Sensors, Engine Upgrade

The mini-Wedge:

Lt Blount, Outmaneuver

That leaves room for 42 points worth of ships. For instance:

2 x Rookie

2 x GSP with Expert Handling

3 x Tala and a hull upgrade for Blount

Etahn, R7-T1, Outmaneuver and advanced sensors.

Dutch, loaded for bear

Really looking forward to play with mini-wedge but for now I'm staying away of non released ship.

Yes but now she is stressed and very predictable

Why aren't you using both Biggs and Wedge by the way?

Why aren't you using both Biggs and Wedge by the way?

PS 8 > PS 5 and I usuallly fight on asteroids where maintaining formation is not optimal.

Don't tell Miss Scarlet that!! She would not be pleased.

Shhhh, it'll be our little secret

I like the Y Wing with Dutch Vander. He does go first before the others, but that could mean some Target Lock passing to his pals. I'd stick him with an ion Cannon so that he could set up some foes for alpha strike by Ibbi and Wedge. I also like the workhorse durability of the Y Wing.

I like th eB Wing with HLC also. In that build, I'd hang everything back and make them come to me, and try to shoot out the rear with the generic B wing, while Ibbi and Wedge took to the flank and came in at an angle, cutting their firepower down or skirmishing with the opponents flankers. The whole group seems like they would be best if carefully flown together, and engaging the enemy piecemail in a corner. Most foes, unless swarming, tend to send up a flanker and rest up the other way. I'd kill the flanking force, then try to force my opponent through asteroids while tossing out range 3 shots. I've seen Wedge off handedly kill Tie Fighters at Range 3 through Asteroids. Ridiculous.
