What do u think of the imperial aces box so far ?

By SoulCrusherEx, in X-Wing

well i bought 4 boxes and the thing that annyos me the most is that i get 2 times saber squadron pilot and 2 times royal guard pilot alongside the new aces in that box

well the upgrade cards are fine and i like em alot ( dont have to buy falcons and a wings for shield upgrade and push the limit yahooo)

but the thing that annoys me most is why does this boy not include 1 alpha pilot and 1 avanger instead of having 2 times saber and 2 times royal guard ?

just sayin with 4 imp aces boyes i would be totally fine with

4 alphas, 4 avangers, 4 sabers, 4 royals and the aces

but no we got 8 sabers and 8 royals + aces

dats to much just sayin. it even seems that they didnt make that mistake with the rebel aces as i can tell u that we see the ps 2 and ps 4 pilot card ONCE per box in that.

iam really sad about it iam still going to buy 4 regular interceptors ( reason i hadnt hcance to buy em in germany, out of stock. so i bought imp aces cause of the release and i have to wait end of quarter 2 to get the regular interceptors >.> )

Because the pack comes with 2 Interceptors, and they wanted 2 generics for each model, incase you wanted to fly 2 of them together. It also keeps some value in the Interceptor pack.

While annoying I understand the choice. Besides, I've never seen an alpha or avenger hit the table. Ever. Royal Guards are some of the best generics in the game. Enjoy them.

Well, there are 3 things that come to mind:

1) You can't give away cards from other packs too easily or you remove the point in buying those packs. That said, I don't think anybody would miss the no-name low skill cards.

2) You don't have those cards which makes you want them over the cards you do have. Understandable, but not everyone else is missing those cards, so we don't feel the gap that you do.

3) If you have too much of a pilot card and are never going to use them (in the case of having 8, but only having 4 models like you do) You can give one or two to friends who are interested but less fortunate.

That said, this is all from someone who's single box of imperial aces is still coming in the mail :(

The Rebel Aces pack still comes with 2 different generic pilot cards, one for each model, just like Imperial Aces. The difference is that the Rebels don't get a new option like the Royal Guard Pilot. Additionally, I imagine they didn't want the "Tie Interceptor Expansion" to become an obsolete product.

What do I think? I think Imperial Aces is fantastic! I love the new pilots and upgrades, especially Royal Guard Title. Opportunist has surprised me with how effective it can be. Targeting Computer has almost doubled Soontir's lethality. So yeah, lots of good stuff. Makes me happy I defected :)

I had the same thought about the lack of Alphas, but as has been stated above, it makes sense from a marketing standpoint. I have 3 TIE interceptor expansions and 1 Imperial Aces, but I still need one more interceptor expansion to fly what I've been running on Vassal: 3x Alpha's, Lt. Lorrir and "Fel's Wrath." seven though I have the correct number of interceptor models and pilot cards, I am lacking one ship base token for an Alpha Sq. Pilot. Kind of annoying. But hey, with epic play just around the corner I'll be happy to add another TIE interceptor to my fleet.

while i undr stand the need to include some lower skill piolts it is an "CES" which would indacate som higher skills

I know its a bummer for you, but its actually a plus on the flip side. I was mainly buying the box for the named pilots, and the royal guard generics. I think a lot of people want to run 4 Royals, but buying 4 boxes would be overkill for that. So I was pretty happy that there was 2 cards in a box, so I only needed to buy 2 boxes. Granted, some people will buy 4 so they can have all 4 crimson squints models, but I'm not quite that hardcore....yet.

simple. because FFG wants your monies

no i feel you. I'm sitting on 5 interceptors and 3 sets of aces now lol

i wish i would had interceptors here in germany before i got aces but yeah **** happens i guess still gonna wait for my regular interceptors >;P

My "issue" with the Imperial Aces is that there are only two Royal Guard tiles and they are on the back of unique pilots. This means I can't field Jax and two RGP unless I buy a second Aces despite having the cards for them.

Most people will not miss the Alpha/Avenger cards/tiles.

I'm just a bit let down by the lack of an "answer" for turrets (the bane of the Interceptor) in the pack.

It would have been nice if ALL the named pilots had benefitted from the "points break" which Royal Guard introduced too.

Otherwise... pretty good overall, I'm certainly using mine to good effect!

It's hard to tell, but I think they did. Take the 22-point Royal Guard, with an EPT but no pilot ability, as the base.

  • Carnor Jax has +2 pilot skill and a spectacular pilot ability for +4 points.
  • Kir Kanos has the same pilot skill, no EPT, and a good pilot ability for +2 points.
  • Tetran Cowall has +1 pilot skill and a good pilot ability for +2 points.
  • Lt. Lorrir has -1 pilot skill, no EPT, and a spectacular pilot ability for +1 points.

Pretty sure that they did but think Kir and Lorrir's abilities were over rated. Even with init and +1 PS Lorrir would have been awesome. I'm not sold on Kir's; seems like he should have had the lower PS of the 2 for usage purpose (but not fluff wise); I don't know what other auto hit shenanigans are in the works but I assume there is one that will let Kir shine a little.

I'm not sure what to feel about them yet. I'm still waiting for my two copies that I pre ordered to arrive....

I already had 5 regular Interceptors so I thought that would be enough. However I ended up getting 4 of the Imperial Aces packs mainly for the cool repaints. Two packs are really all you need for the cards to field 4 RGs but I actual want to see 4 RG so that is why I bought 4 packs.

I had a game last night with a mix of 181st and an Avenger Interceptor and purely from a visual POV it was cool to see the mixed paint schemes. The K-turn guy was also fun to play with when given Vet Instincts.

So if a good pilot ability costs 1 and a spectacular pilot ability costs 2, and there's no cost associated with an EPT, then the only pilot who doesn't get the Royal Guard's "discount" is Kir Kanos--and that could also be because FFG thinks he has a spectacular ability.

If you compare it to the saber squadron price, it makes even more sense.

Royal Guard is 1 more point for two more PS and EPT

Kir Kanos is 3 more points for 2 PS and a pilot ability.

Lorrir is one more point for one more PS and a pilot ability.

Cowall is 3 more point for 3PS and a pilot ability.

Carnor Jax is 5 more points for 4 more PS and a spectacular ability.

I suppose I see the argument.

But Lorrir is the one I see suffering.

He's paying for a pilot skill that, in this set, he should be getting for free.

Well, four boxes was really only necessary if you wanted the a full set of Sabers or Royal Guard miniatures. Otherwise, two boxes would have been just fine, and, imo, a great purchase for that reason alone. (Full disclosure, I went with four, too, but I love the kit).

Overall, it's a great box and, as mentioned, the RG pilot is a brand new pilot that the A-Wing didn't get. Of course, it's essentially a built in VI with the RG, which is something the A-Wing can do. I am actually bummed about the named pilots, with the exception of Jax, as for the rest they seem to be missing just a bit, but I think the RG pilots made it worth while all by themselves.

I like the box a lot. The artwork is nice. It holds the contents very securely. Of course, once I opened it up and organized the contents, the box went to the recycle bin.

In all seriousness, I am digging the Royal Guard repaints. I wish they had the fins, but oh well. I got a good deal and bought 4 sets so I could run four Royal Guards painted.

Holy Crap, when did you pre-order these?

About three weeks before they dropped. The place that I ordered from didn't get in anywhere near enough and didn't get restocked with more until four weeks later. They finally got sent last Friday and are somewhere over the Pacific coming to me, so I probably won't get them until next week.

It's for this reason that I am concerned about the new tournament rules that allow models as soon as they are released. If FFG get's lazy and doesn't stipulate that newly released models are unavailable for use in an event, then players get an unfair advantage depending on whether they were able to get their hands on the limited supply or not.

I finally ordered a set and am hoping to see them Friday. This will bring me to my target interceptor force of 5 and I have made them some space in my storage. I'm looking forward to my next game, aaaand expecting it to be a while. Silly just owning the products for this game makes me happy.

It was sold out in many places in my area, I managed to get my 4th set on Barnes and Noble, they also sell it. Try it there, and if you are a member and have the coupons, it is an extra bonus.

Because Alpha and Avenger pilots aren't "Aces". That's what the standard Interceptor expansion is for.
