Complete n00b Question. Character life span?

By Gospog, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Hey everyone, I am completely new to Descent. I bought the main box and as many of the expansion as I could find. (all but one, I think)

My group has not played yet. (soon, we hope) I noticed that each expansion comes with new Heroes that we can play.

We plan to play in "campaign mode", as opposed to one-off games. So here's my question:

When we start the very first campaign in the original box, are we allowed to use Heroes from the expansion sets?

Also, let's say we start with new Heroes and go all the way through the original campaign. Would those characters, all pumped up from winning a bunch of games, continue on to (say) Labyrinth of Ruin, as is? Are we supposed to ditch them for new Heroes? The ones specifically from Labyrinth of Ruin? Just use "fresh" ones?

Any advice is appreciated. Thank you.

The campaigns are played separately. So You would play Shadow Rune, then when you played Labyrinth of ruin you would start over at 0 level with new heroes and no equipment.

You are allowed to mix in any heroes/item sets/etc you want, just know what you are putting in. I personally use all the items from all expansions in both shop decks, the secret room cards, the new overlord classes, and all the travel cards.

Campaign mode is the best way to play so you are making the right call there. Also any heroes can be any class that corresponds to its base (blue, red, yellow, green) and you can mix and match those across expansions without problems as well, like Tomble being a stalker, or Syndrael being a beastmaster..

According to the Rules, if you use some parts of an expansion, you should use all parts of the expansion.

That said, I don't think it's THAT big of a deal if you just limit things to heroes/monsters for your first campaign. Though there's still a decent number of options out of the box for your first play-through and the heroes / monsters tend to be a little less complex and the number of weird combinations is lower if you stick with the core box.
