Would you buy card packs only?

By Nickotine42, in X-Wing

Personally, I think they need to do faction card packs, because most ships from the preexisting factions have been reprints of what’s in the conversion kits to avoid having to make people buy so much more for a couple cards, which would seriously mess with the buyers.

If they could do relatively cheap faction upgrade/pilot card decks then I’d definitely buy. Then we’d have more unique factions rather than only elite cards being the only real difference between factions, outside of specific characters or ship titles.

Considering I'm still waiting for some of my favorite ships from 1.0 to be viable, I'd very much like some new cards.

Maybe a Leebo gunner that reads, "After you fully complete a white or blue maneuver, you may perform a rotate action."

At the end of the day, if it means more pilots for my ships... Yeah, sure. Why the **** not?

I have been playing for roughly 3 years now, if my wife knew the exact amount of money spent.... I don't want any more of the older ships, stuff like the docking ghost etc are cool, and I may buy one. But I have a tonne of Scyks, Z 95's and all the other 1.0 ships, I don't need more. But I would buy card expansions every day of the week, they can let the older players continue on collecting without weighing up, do they need a 4th JM5K, Falcon or any other ship.

I have at least one of all the ships, some I have a lot more than one, I don't want or need more plastic. I think it is beholden on FFG to release card packs so older 1.0 players don't get jaded AF about the game.

I'd buy card expansions under the following conditions

* they come with a reasonable assortment (don't need like 10 proton torpedoes for example or stuff that's already available in my conversion kit)

* they come in a reasonable price range (when I get a free ship that I don't want for the same price I'd be pissed)

* the content is clearly specified (no MtG style booster packs)

For new pilots, titles, configs, and maybe some crew/gunners, I’d buy. How to distribute these properly (by faction, by wave, by ship, etc) could be a challenge and I doubt there is a way that will make everyone happy, but I think it is worth the challenge.

Faction Specific packs sound like a great way to let Imperials get Afra's droids, Scum get their Moldy Crow, and Rebels get Maul and Hate. Things like new Pilots, Configs, Titles, Crew and other upgrades would make these packs very cool IMO. It also sounds like a pretty great way to distribute these new things without FFG having to produce a new mini for everyone to buy. I like buying new mini's for my collection, but I wouldn't feel great about getting more B-wings or whatever than I can field in a standard game, and I imagine that sentiment is shared by a good number of people.

Generic upgrade packs could be a good idea as well. Stick stuff in there like a copy or two of afterburners and barrage rockets, and maybe whatever that new cannon is gonna be along with anything else that isn't in all that many expac's by the time of their release.

If they did both that would be kinda interesting, but I'd be most pleased if they did just the faction ones. If it's just faction ones they could also include in them some generic upgrades that the faction doesn't have access to yet, for those that only play 1 or 2 of the 7. That might increase the cost of these packs, but under the right circumstances I would be ok paying more for these than the Legion card pack.

I think an important question is, just how much are people willing to spend on these theoretical packs? If they were faction specific with new pilots and upgrades or upgrades that are in a very limited number of expansions I'd personally say up to $15 per pack, or more if more than 2 ships are getting new pilots. If it was just generic upgrades like Legion is getting a $10 asking price doesn't seem too bad provided there's a decent number of upgrades, preferably with doubles of some cards. What's everyone else's thoughts on the price's for these type's of things?

I’m fine with those prices.

for non-faction upgrades, I’d definitely say sell pack like they are doing with legion, but for new cards, not more proton torpedoes etc.

and I’d love if they did more faction specific upgrades that made playing different factions feel more unique, which could happen quite easily if they did faction specific card packs so that people don’t have to buy copies of ships.

Yes, but for the sake of FFG's making a prfoit on thw game so it doesn't die, I'd be happy with Aces packs.

However, if they were to do Aces packs, complete with exclusive repaints, I would be happy for them to include upgrades for ships not included in the box.

Option 2 would be a campaign box, similar to Armada. Toss in a few new pilots and upgrades foe the factions involved.

Option 3 is a starter box, similar to Servants of Strife, for the first 5 factions, with repaints and pilot cards mot available in the regular ship packs.

Since the Ace Packs would be less of a band-aid fix like in 1st ed, and more about just increasing game options, that sounds like a pretty solid route to take. Upgrades in them beyond the ships in the pack also sounds like a good way to make those packs more appealing in general.

A campaign box could be pretty awesome. Having the outcome of one game influence the next in a direct and narrative driven way is always cool. Or they could go the co-op route, having a group of players working against someone running the opposition or even an AI like we've seen pop up in a lot of FFG games.

The Starter box/Squad pack feels kinda like the 2nd ed version of the Ace pack. They also seem pretty likely to happen on each faction at some point. Then again plenty of us have been saying that since Wave 3 was announced and nothing like them exists in 4 or 5 so who knows. They would be a good way to distribute some new pilots and heaps of upgrades though. From just two of the Republic Squad packs I now have tons of most generic upgrades.

I think aces packs would be awesome, but they’d only cover the ships included, unless they added extra pilots for other ships, but for new players that would cause issues.

^This.

I would like to see them do what the did for the Star Wars LCG where the card packs had a specific set of cards and then they could make each one faction specific and for the time being focus on Rebels, Imperials and Scum.

For Rebels they could do packs like Battle of Yavin: Rebellion, Phoenix Fleet, Battle of Scarif: Rebellion, and Battle of Endor: Rebellion, Each of these could give us more pilots and upgrades from each of these major engagements.

For Imperials they could name packs Battle of Yavin: Imperial, Battle of Scarif: Imperial, Battle of Endor: Imperial, 7th Fleet Aces, Inquisitorious, Executor Aces, expanding pilots from all over the Imperial Fleet.

For Scum they could Focus on certain Syndicates and Pirate groups like the Black Suns, Pike Syndicate, and Hutt Cartels.

All these could have a certain number of cards and cardboard for maybe like 10 bucks since it doesn't include a model and would make it easier to spread out all the different major upgrades out to all the factions.

I felt that we needed card-only packs back in 2014 up until the announcement for X-Wing Second Edition, to rebalance and renew existing ships that had been made obsolete (Aces card packs, basically). Now it doesn't make as much sense to add card-only packs because we have revamped rules, conversion kits and reissued ships; in almost every way, the Second Edition treatment is better than just patching the First Edition.

I'd definitely be interested in card-only expansion packs with new pilots and new upgrades. In fact, I think those would sell like crazy. I wouldn't be very interested in card packs containing pilots or upgrades that are already available elsewhere.

Card packs that facilitate new playstyles (something like Star Wars Legion's mission cards) would be the sort of thing I'd want to see more than anything else. To do this properly, you'd probably have to throw in a rules pamphlet and a few punchboard sheets of tokens for specific mission types.

This. ^

With the way the points and upgrade slots work (both variable), I think that card packs are the missing piece of control that FFG is lacking in. They are necessary for getting all seven (freaking SEVEN now) factions on the same page as far as generic upgrades [FFG stated that in 2.0 you would not have to hunt down a particular expansion JUST to get your hands on that one upgrade that would complete your list].

However, the card packs really shine in terms of releasing new content for expansions that are already out. This could mean new pilots, configurations, and titles for ships that we have had for some time.

Side note: I honestly think that the only way to fix the TIE aggressor and defender would be new pilots.

Yeah there's definitely a market for new Rebel/Imperial pilots. They haven't gotten a single new faction-specific upgrade since it came out last September, and we haven't been able to get our hands on the new generic upgrades very easily either. I don't want to buy any new ships but I'd definitely like to see:

New pilots for:

• Rebel - A-Wing, B-Wing, YT-2400, Z-95, E-Wing and/or K-Wing, maybe even X-Wing, U-Wing, HWK

• Imperial - Interceptor, Defender, Aggressor, Punisher, maybe Bomber, Phantom, Tie/v1, Decimator

I'm thinking specifically, Hera (in A and B wings, maybe I6, probably with a version of Tycho's ability), Skerris (Interceptor and Defender), Ciena Ree, Gina Moonsong, Anton Merrick, Laren Joma, K2-SO, Adon Fox, Shara Bey A-Wing, Mart Mattin YT (and maybe VCX), probably lots of others I don't know, maybe some made-up FFG ones.

Hard to get upgrades: All force talents, Afterburners, Autoblaster, Spare parts canister, snap shot, targeting computer, etc.

Errataed Cards: JUMPMASTER PILOTS AND TITLE PLEASE FFG (the dial's okay they just need a 3 front arc and maybe a white rotate! and maybe make Manaroo playable again why did you hurt her so bad)

Hard to get tokens: Debris clouds, Spare parts, Cargo, some bombs/mines?

For upgrades, here I know I'm going a little crazy...

B-Wing: Config for cannon Double-tap (or else just make cannons free/cheap and raise the base cost of the chassis - B-Wings should always have cannons), Blade Wing Prototype Title (+1 agility, gunner slot, maybe boost action?), unique double-slot B-Wing only cannon

A-Wing: Delta-7B type config for early Phoenix A-Wings, new missile options?

U-Wing: Config for turret slot? Sounds dumb, but some way to Put Bistan on a U-Wing anyway (maybe just Laren Joma's).

TIE Defender: TIE/D Elite Configuration (no ideas here besides double-tap but that would be super OP)

Other: New titles for Jumpmaster, Lancer (Banshee), YT-2400 (Sato's Hammer), maybe Hwk, Starviper, YV? Probably tons of new crew/gunner options: Rebels need at least one gunner that doesn't depend on turret arc or multiple attacks.

Faction packs for Rebels, Imps, Scum, and a generic upgrade pack. $10-15 each and I'd buy them all in a heartbeat.

Sorry for the huge brain dump.

I think there is great potential here. I’d prefer new pilots over upgrade card packs. Thinking things like Hera Syndulla in a T-65 x-wing, Ezra in a Y-wing, or even a Kaz T-70. Shows like the Mandalorian will undoubtedly introduce new characters flying existing ships.

It would be awesome to have faction packs (aces, ship titles, unique mods and crew) and Upgrade packs (missiles, torps, cannons, etc. with all upgrades per wave). Or whatever they came up, but super afforable... Could make the game grow (or at least that first ed ships get buyed and tried by exp players and so..)

Anyway, looking forward to this!!! Superexcited!

So how soon are we expecting to see these? Any chance to see an early surprise-drop between Waves 4 and 5? As a (nearly) exclusive Rebel/Imp player I haven't had any new toys since the launch of 2.0.

We need K-2S0!

Doubtful. Wave 6 at the earliest and that is if they'd already been developing the packs for X-Wing 2.0 before Wave 4 was announced.

Did they state they will be doing some kind of card pack during the stream? I missed it, so all I know is they said maybe to card packs in X-wing during a panel.

Pilot packs were mentioned as being looked into in response to Dion's ( @Goldsquadronpodcast ) Q&A question at Celebration iirc. Upgrade packs at the Adepticon Q&A (I don't know who asked there). Both recordings are on GSPs YouTube page. :)

Yes, and I remember they mentioned K-2S0 by name and basically said he would be coming in a card pack.

I don't know. Epic 2.0 is coming WAY earlier than I expected, so who can say?

This is possibly the worse thing to happen to X-wing and worse that 360 primary weapon turrets Tie Phantom and Jumpmaster put together.
