When I go to a tournament or play against someone else who has there own stuff cards aren't too much of a problem, but I spend a lot of time convincing my friends to come over and play with my stuff. This shouldn't be a problem since I own EVERYTHING. I have three or four of most ships, and 8 TIEs. But I only have 1 YT-1300, 1 Firespray, 1 Shuttle, and 1 HWK. These just aren't ships that you need a lot of. And (with the exception of the HWK) they cost twice as much as the other ships. They are also where you get some of the best cards.

Here are just a few of the cards that I would like more of.

Advanced Sensors

Gunner

Stealth Device

Engine Upgrade

Heavy Laser Cannon

Anti-Pursuit Laser

Maybe Recon Spec (I haven't tried him on the Firespray, but he is supposed to be awesome.)

I plan on getting another Firespray and another Shuttle. I think I will play with more than one of these, but I don't think I would play with three of any of the big ships more than once (each) to try them out.

However, someday I really want to run 3 ORS all with Anti-Pursuit Lasers.

I'd certainly buy card packs. I'm only missing Daredevil from my current stock, but have the Imp Aces for the ships, so a card pack would be an ideal way to catch up with all the previously released cards and upgrades.

I've posted in a separate thread an idea about 'optimal loadout' decks for scenarios ie a deck of cards designed just for Imps, with PTL, Squad Leader, Swarm Tactics, etc, which would give players multiple copies of the most frequently used cards, without the need to buy the various models multiple times.

It would certainly help my budget - especially if I cannot afford a Corellian Corvette on day 1, but really want to put R2D2 in my Millenium Falcon. A card pack would be ideal in this situation.

I would buy those. And it is a great oportunity to release empty ships and pilots like attack wing, so I could make Biggs fly the Millenium Falcon, or even a Luke Single Card with the pilot and crew texts so you could use him either as a pilot or as part of a crew... I would buy boosters just for colection purposes...

I don't think we're ever going to see separate ship and pilot cards, since the game already combines pilot+ship on the same card and it works just fine.

I expect we will see some familiar pilots like Wedge assigned to something other than an X-Wing (for example), but I'm sure FFG wants to keep a tight control on which pilot abilities go with which ship abilities.

the advantage of fixed pilot+ship combos is, that even if you introduce the same pilot on another ship you can choose another ability etc. It would be interesting to see when they start putting existing pilots on other ships, it would essentially mark the point where you don't have enough new stuff that a reappearance of existing pilots is preferable to too unknown pilots. (similar to the repaints)

I actually prefer the Aces approach because of the repaints. Give us two or four more packs, which seem to be offering the cards you need most for the ships coming in the pack. By then, any ships that need "adjusting" will be taken care of and I'll have every card I could possibly want. And, I'll have a bunch of cool repaints as well.

They will never release empty ships...I love how STAW, which is about to break it's Camel, Wizkids, back because it is declining in sales and failing, game mechanics keep being brought up as ideas fo X-Wing. They fact that in STAW you can have Kirk on the 1701D is so....so....stupid!

I agree completely. It's more adaptable game design to allow pilots to be in different ships. But it's harder to balance, and as a former Heroclix player I can tell you, Game balance is no their highest priority in design. FFG is much better at balancing.

I understand why they didn't but I think the game would have been better(and far and away more enjoyable to squad build for) if it had been built from the ground up to have pilots capable of hopping into multiple ships, even if they were restricted to large ships or small ships or something similar. This game has very little combo potential and that does cut the fun out of parts of the game for many of us. Especially given that cardboard is rarely worth the cost of trying to build an effective interesting combo.

I like the way things are now...Each wave you get new ships and cards ; this gives FFG enough time to prepare for the next wave lol...

I don't buy that logic. Wedge has flown every ship the rebels have except the Falcon. But I can only have him in an X-wing. Pilots are capable of piloting multiple ships and it would make sense to deploy your pilots in the ships their abilities are best suited for.

Apart from the idea of having very little combo potential, I agree with everything. As I've stated, I would love to have pilot cards that I could attatch to any ship. That would, as you've said, make the game far more enjoyable. I don't play tournaments, as in my country, very few people know about this game, but I really enjoy gathering my friends in my living room and having a match for the night. As casual players we were even thinking about moding the cards so that we would be able to put pilots in diferent ships... that would give us a wide range of scenarios, missions and even variants of the game.

If only to not have fights between "theme" players and "competitive" players, I'm glad that you can't mix and match pilots. It's pretty bad in Attack Wing.

And never mind the insane retooling that would have to be done in order to balance things.

For my campaign I am currently writing, I am thinking about having certain named pilots be able to fly multiple ships. For now it's only Tycho (can pilot an X-wing) and Maarek. Maybe Ibtisam in an X-wing.

That being said, I am glad that pilots can't be mix and matched like in STAW. It makes those hard choices even tougher.

I would buy just the cards. I dont think it will happen though.

Holy necro-thread Batman!!! I guess it is pertinent again. To make sure this is perfectly clear, FFG is doing this for Legion and looking at doing so for X-Wing and iirc possibly Armada.

That part said, **** yes I would pick up generic upgrade and possibly pilot packs (something else they said they could be looking at, though it wasn't specified it would be card packs on that one). Especially if the hypothetical pilot packs included dials for their ships.

Well since this topic is resurrected and rather off key. Wave 1 or even Wave 2 would have been more appropriate to resurrect this thread because one can argue that the Conversion Kits are just that, a cardboard only expansion. So this may sound like a double standard but I feel that it should be very clear on my opinions and arguments against an X-wing cardboard only expansion.

So no cardboard only expansions for x-wing unless there is a very necessary reason. Converting to new edition so older models can be included is such a reason. When talks of 2nd edition were popping up around Wave 7 (when we got the TFA core set) the one thing I stated is if we had a 2nd edition FFG better figure out a way to make the old models playable. The conversion kits do exactly that. As for just to add new pilots and upgrades to existing ships, the answer is no. For one the cardboard is useless without the model, sure you can play without the models in some sort of super casual game but the aesthetic the models bring to the table top makes a different. Not many player's collection match up perfectly with the conversion kit so there is a lot of extra cardboard already in the game. We do not need any more. I already filled up two binders (One 3" and another 4"). I'll take more ships and the cardboard that goes with them but not cardboard.

Now on to Armada, I am okay with cardboard only expansions because of two reasons. 1st of all, Armada does not get as many expansions as X-wing. A sad truth but somewhat understandable as Star Wars space combat focused more on the fighter side of combat. There was only one scene where you get to see one capital ship shooting at another capital ship. At the battle of Endor it was implied but most of the shots you see were fighter on capital and fighter on fighter. 2nd, also Armada has a bigger scope than X-wing. X-wing is solely focused on the Fighter on fighter combat. Sure there is Epic but that hasn't reached 2nd edition yet. With Armada's larger scope you have named ships and commanders as well as fighter pilots and squadron formations. So there is a lot more that is left out in expansion only upgrades.

Which sort of moves on to Legion, now I'll be honest I don't have any interest in Legion yet (not until the AT-AT drops) so I can't say I have a real say in what is good or bad. But I can say this, there are more grunts than there are pilots. So in a way the scope of Legion is much larger than the scope of X-wing because naturally there will be a higher model count. A higher count means more names to be thrown out there. Now sure you can argue that a fighter squadron is the same size as an infantry battalion in terms of manpower and you would be right, but fighter combat doesn't take the mechanics, the ground crew, and the fuel truck or other vehicles with them to combat. Now certain upgrades can reflect the efforts of the ground based teams as pilots and maintainers work to improve the fighters performance, but in tactical games you want the fighting models in the area the tooth, not the tail. A ground combat unit may have maintainers and support staff but there is less tail to the tooth therefore on a tactical level a lot more in there. So like Armada I am okay with cardboard only expansions.

X-wing has a lot more models and we don't need Luke Skywalker to be a pilot in every single fighter the Alliance has. We are fine with X-wing's expansions as they are especially with new releases two to three times a year. So now it is time to put this thread to rest, for good. X-wing wasn't designed with cardboard only expansions and that is just fine. Keep it that way, there is always custom card league if you want to explore more on the Star Wars universe with X-wing.

Well.... since it was brought up in the stream, yes, I would. If it was pilots or upgrades I wanted, I’d rather buy the card pack than the ships from a faction I don’t play.

If it's straight up new content I wouldn't mind.

But I also wouldn't mind generic upgrade kits either.

It is just such a BIG MISSED OPPORTUNITY on FFG.

We could finally get K2-S0, Rogue Squadron Title, 181st Title, Fels Wrath and so many more stuff FAST without waiting for a ship that will MAYBE come and will MAYBE have the right slots to fit these stuff in.

These cards could even REWRITE some already established pilots (ERRATA) that proved to be underwhelming (looking at Deathfires ability for example)
