I would by the packs, but it will not happen. Probably about 6 months ago I emailed FFG about just this issue. And the answer was they have no plans at this time to release seperate packs of cards.
Would you buy card packs only?
Card expansions are a nice idea. Not likely to happen. Patience on certain upgrades will pay off. Do you know how many Imperial players lost out when they went after the A-wing for Push the Limit. Or how many people who bought Lambdas are now banging their head? I don't mind how they do the current releases. And I do actually really love the repaints we are getting, so I hope they continue that (waiting patiently for a green X-wing).
Them and their marketing schemes! If everyone would just buy max amount of everything we'd all be in fine shape with cards.....or have alot of extras since the most you could even use of most upgrades is like 6!
I actually see this as the way they can continue the product on for a retro fit in the future.
After years of selling the ships and cards, they could move to just selling ships (with tokens and upgrades), and players could buy various pilot packs for ships that would come with bases, and pilots cards.
They will never release empty ships...I love how STAW, which is about to break it's Camel, Wizkids, back because it is declining in sales and failing, game mechanics keep being brought up as ideas fo X-Wing. They fact that in STAW you can have Kirk on the 1701D is so....so....stupid!
Pardon my ignorance, but why do you think having Kirk in 1701d is stupid?

Lack of an understanding of Time Travel vs awesome quotient.

lol... I see your point...
... but I would still like to have Jan Ors flying the Millenium Falcon, or even the possibility of imagining Chewie stealing a Tie Fighter and using it...
I think it could also extend the product past a cycle of new ship designs. At some point they will run out if they don't expand into different factions or different eras. I love this game and want it to have as long a life cycle as possible. Card packs give them huge profit margins in comparison to the production cost of the ships. I'll still buy ships and aces and whatever they release. But having the ability to buy all of wave 3 epts would be awesome. It's an area they have familiarity with given the vastness of their lcg catalog. I'm sure they crunched the numbers and realized its not profitable at the moment. In the future i hope it will be.

I agree completely. It's more adaptable game design to allow pilots to be in different ships. But it's harder to balance, and as a former Heroclix player I can tell you, Game balance is no their highest priority in design. FFG is much better at balancing.

Balance is a problem indeed...
I'm not suggesting you could have a random pilot flying whatever ship you want. You'd buy a naked A-wing or two, then snag some A-wing pilots.
By selling the ships naked, you could implement full scale reboots when the game gets out of control. You keep using the same minis, but release adjusted stats for the pilots, etc.

My thoughts as well. I do support the idea. And I support them in booster card packs... so we should still buy the miniatures and could have more options. But as Aminar mentioned, it could unbalance the game. Like, Luke flying the Millenium Falcon, or Chewie in the X-wing...
In either ways, I would buy card packs for sure

Yea, which is why I think pilots would still be very ship specific.
FFG has done a great job balancing the game, so I'm not too concerned with them messing something up and letting Chewie fly a TIE.
However, power creep is inevitable, so having a soft reset button would be useful.

My point is they don't need to go screwing things up by having the option of putting pilots on ships they never had....crap in STAW you can put any captain on any ship. I think if I am right you can even put them on other factions ships. That maybe wrong so don't go poking at me on that.
Bottom line is don't go trying to make a game more complicated becuase you want pilot to ship combos that can break the games system or more over just look and sound idiotic.

Biggs in a Y-Wing with R2D2 comes to mind as a potential game breaker.
Never watched much trek then I guess.....
Pretty easy to imagine the D swinging around the sun to go back in time to pick up some whales.......
Also Mc Coy was on the D in the first episode of TNG......
Card and token packs is something I've been wanting for awhile now, but they would need to be new stuff only.
Would be great to have an expansion per ship introducing new pilots for the ships we already have.
They could put in new missions and the tokens to support the new missions.
Would be a great way to expand the game with out us having to wait half the year for new stuff

I believe his ability is titled "Broken Hip".
I would be surprised if they ever release card packs. They have a great business model selling ships.
I don't buy this at all. Given that the ships are £12 and they could easily sell a pack of cards for £10 (1 of each from the wave for example) the profit margins must be higher.
Uhm... I don't think you've thought this argument through very well.
If they're 1:1, sure, it might be close. But how many ship sales would they lose for that one pack of cards? 4? 6? More? If we use the LCGs as a baseline, a $15 card pack has about 60 cards in it (let's use those numbers, since they're the same) and run some numbers.
X-wing currently has a bit over 100 unique abilities (I catalog them for rules analysis, so that's the easy-to-hand number). 30 or so of those are pilots - nobody should need pilots, either unique or generic, because they wouldn't have the models to use them. It would also complicate distribution, since you'd need base plates. So that leaves around 70 upgrade cards - pretty close to the $15.
So at $15 they could basically pack one copy of EVERY SINGLE UPGRADE currently in the game - the upgrade equivalent of buying 12 times that.
Of course, even if they did that, then everyone would gripe about how they had to buy one Expose for every copy of Advanced Sensors, and they still had to pay $15 per pack to get what they wanted. So card packs would pretty much break FFG's revenue model for the game and STILL not make people any happier.
<shrug> Just go by the **** ships.
Yes, 100% Absolutely. There's plenty of ships I don't want to buy, but upgrades for them are amazing (mostly rebel ships). System Upgrades, Veteran Instincts… all sorts of goodies.
I would buy those. And it is a great oportunity to release empty ships and pilots like attack wing, so I could make Biggs fly the Millenium Falcon, or even a Luke Single Card with the pilot and crew texts so you could use him either as a pilot or as part of a crew... I would buy boosters just for colection purposes...

I don't think we're ever going to see separate ship and pilot cards, since the game already combines pilot+ship on the same card and it works just fine.
I expect we will see some familiar pilots like Wedge assigned to something other than an X-Wing (for example), but I'm sure FFG wants to keep a tight control on which pilot abilities go with which ship abilities.
so I could make Biggs fly the Millenium Falcon
Why do you hate the game so much you want to destroy it??
Really, if you're trying to convince people that mixing pilots and ships should never, EVER be allowed in X-wing, this is pretty much the best argument you could ever make.

lol... I like Biggs in the expanded universe titles. But I see your point...
. So, let's go with Kyle, Luke and Jan Ors in the same ship... lol
I could add a bunch to the "FFG should release card packs" crowd, or to the "FFG really would make a decent profit by selling card packs" but instead I'll just say:
My wallet appreciates FFG's decision not to release card packs.
