Is it worth it?

By Roy Stone, in X-Wing

Its the X-Wing Miniatures forum. We aren't going to tell you the game sucks. :P

Shrug

I've got nothing. Your logic is undeniable and indisputable.

Already defeated by an X-Wing player and I haven't even started the game yet.

Just trying to help.

For the list building side, X Wing is sooooo much more fun than 40k. First off, FFG publishes all their cards on the web, so every rule is available to everyone for free at any time. You don't have to do all this inverted math to not 'give away' GW's special rule secrets. Oh ya, no $50 codexes either.

Second, there are several 'unofficial' website army builders of the game, that are constantly updated and very accurate, with all the rules for the cards embedded. I know the voidstate one even lists which expansion a certain upgrade card comes in. Just google X Wing Squad Builder, should be the first hit. Mess around with it, normal lists are 100pts (which take about 1 hour to play).

Biggest thing I can say, is try to get a demo game in at a local store. Worst case is buy the starter set online for cheaper, play a couple games. If you like the mechanics, keep investing. If not, stop there, worst is you lost a little money, and have a couple cool display models for a desk somewhere :P

It does make me wonder though how many people were thinking the same thing as you. This is an X-Wing forum for people who like playing X-Wing and I ask if it is worth being interested in playing X-Wing.

You made me laugh with your previous post.

Wanting a change to a new and exciting game. Not sure whether to make X-Wing that new game. These are my thoughts, but I welcome any assistance you might give to help me decide for sure.

Positives

Models are already assembled and painted.

Starter set is a bargain compared to the price of 1 X-Wing and 2 Tie Fighters.

Negatives

The price of the starter set and models.

Need at least one of each expansion for all the possible upgrade cards.

50/50 on the pros and cons

I think both the Empire and Rebels have cool models. Can't pick a side.

You may find it helpful to know X-Wing is currently competing with Dropzone Commander for my money.

Thank you in advance for taking the time to reply with your thoughts.

Don't worry about buying at least 1 of every model to begin with. Of course you will want to add to your collection as you get further into the game but you don't need them to get tons of enjoyment out of the core sets.

Of course for you a plus is the models are already painted, but later down the line if you fancy a dabble, repainting or touching up is dead easy with these models. Win / win as far as I'm concerned.

Like both sides, can't decide which to go with ? Don't. I tend to buy from both Imperials and Rebels. I like playing both and having a good selection as you go is great for introducing friends to the hobby too.

I don't think it's an expensive choice myself, but then I come from playing 40k where an Army book (codex) alone costs more than a X-Wing starter set. What I love about the format this game has is that each ship comes with multiple cards so can be used in a myriad of ways by just switching cards. I can't tell you which way to go, but I can say that I think out of all the miniature games I've played since the 80s, this is easily the most player friendly and balanced.

Im not a huge Star Wars fan. The game is fantastic though. I actually got into it after losing a ton of games and thinking it wasn't worth it. But man, if it isn't a blast. And my wife loves it too.

I did some snooping before posting and I too read that 2 starters were a good start.

Positives

Models are already assembled and painted. It also means your opponents models are assembled and painted so you always get to play against a "fully painted army".

Starter set is a bargain compared to the price of 1 X-Wing and 2 Tie Fighters. You'll want to buy at least one of each of those expansions to pick up the additional pilots and upgrades in those sets.

Negatives

The price of the starter set and models. It costs about the same as a squad of troops for most other game systems. I really can't complain.

Need at least one of each expansion for all the possible upgrade cards. You then also have one of each ship which means you can play around with lists a lot more as you have more options in choices of ships. As you work out what works and doesn't work for you, it becomes easy to buy the extra 1-2 ships to play a list that you want to run.

50/50 on the pros and cons

I think both the Empire and Rebels have cool models. Can't pick a side. Focus on buying more models of one side than the other, but like many of us here, you will probably end up collecting both in equal amounts.

You may find it helpful to know X-Wing is currently competing with Dropzone Commander for my money. I haven't played DZC unfortunately to make a good comparison, but unlike DSC, you don't need to cart around terrain with you to play a game and X-Wing plays faster.

My comments in BLUE.

I do like a good comment dissection during replying.

Some good points made there Eltnot. Good way to counter my negatives. In my favourite colour too.
