Is it worth it?

By Roy Stone, in X-Wing

Wanting a change to a new and exciting game. Not sure whether to make X-Wing that new game. These are my thoughts, but I welcome any assistance you might give to help me decide for sure.

Positives

Models are already assembled and painted.

Starter set is a bargain compared to the price of 1 X-Wing and 2 Tie Fighters.

Negatives

The price of the starter set and models.

Need at least one of each expansion for all the possible upgrade cards.

50/50 on the pros and cons

I think both the Empire and Rebels have cool models. Can't pick a side.

You may find it helpful to know X-Wing is currently competing with Dropzone Commander for my money.

Thank you in advance for taking the time to reply with your thoughts.

Honestly, compared to the price of getting into other miniature games, like warhammer which i used to play, getting into x wing costs alot less.

It's much cheaper than most minis games. And yes. Worth it. Worth it all.

I agree. X-Wing is excellently put together and you don't need all the expansions to have fun, variable friendly matches at your FLGS or with a couple of mates

Dropzone Commander has very detail-oriented rules and a steeper learning curve, I think. I also considered gettin into it, but X-wing won out, mostly because of the theme. Starfighters are my favorite part of Star Wars.

So if you really like the detailed rules, painting and assembling your own models, designing your own terrain and X-wings & TIE fighters don't make your inner child all giddy, I'd go DZC.

However, I think it's easier to invite friends over for a quick dogfight and not get bogged down by rules.

So if you really like:

1-the detailed rules,

2-painting and assembling your own models,

3-designing your own terrain

and

4-X-wings & TIE fighters don't make your inner child all giddy.

5-However, I think it's easier to invite friends over for a quick dogfight and not get bogged down by rules.

Sorry I scrambled your reply. Makes it easier to reply so you can know me a bit better:

1- Don't mind detailed rules. I've read the DZC rules and find them easier than WH40K.

2- No! A toddler could paint better than me. But there is a company which I could get to do both for me...at a price though.

3- I've always wanted to create my own scenery. Love being creative.

4- My name is Stone and I'm a Star Warsaholic.

5- My friends don't want to learn detailed rules.

Look at it this way.

Which one of these games is the most recognized?

Almost everyone has heard of star wars, can the same be said for DZC ?

In this day you are more likley to go to a game store and get a quick pick up game of x-wing than you are for dropzone.

Besides.... you want 15 pages of rules, or you want 120 pages to learn.

It cost me 117.00 to buy into X-wing that got me :

Starter set

Extra dice

Falcon

Firespray

A-wing

Y-wing.

That was plenty to mess around with untill I just went all pokemon on this game and bought the rest.

Even still, I only have about 265.00 total.

How much is it gonna cost to get up and running in DZC?

How much is it gonna cost to get up and running in DZC?

£60 starter set. Though this includes rulebook, city terrain and two armies.

But then there is the other models. Gluing. Painting. It would be more I'll accept that. Even if you were talking £'s not $'s

I played some DZC demos at Templecon in February, honestly I felt it was a little weak. Its another dice roller game. It felt like as faster and more modernized version of Epic 40k.

Put your models on the table, roll a bucket of dice, take models off the table. Repeat until someone wins.

To me it even feels like FFG does not even want my money compared to GW!

I have to wait on a new wave, and it is not even useful to get a gazillion of a single type ship, how crap is that! Instead I have to explore all the different options and fleet lists before I get a new ship to play with. I don't even know what to do with my left over money... I might and start doing some plastic GW crack on the side again.

So yeah now for realsies, I love x-wing and the slow and steady releases, the small 100pts fleets and the utility the upgrades give. Buying into it is not that expensive (just compare to getting a GW army) and the occasional ship that gets released is not that high of an upkeep.

The price might feel high for a non-miniature war gamer, but its quite cheap compared to most miniature war games.

Interesting post.

Started off and I thought I was about to read an opposing perspective. Then you hit me with the reasons for wanting this game. It does seem odd that a company would produce a game with cool models and yet not encourage MASSIVE games with them.

For a joke I worked out how many ships I'd need for a 1500 point fleet (considered a small game of WH40K) and the biggest fleet I came up with, using a squadron builder, was about 105 Tie Fighters which weighed in at £1153.95 from Wayland Games.

Don't worry. I'm not mad enough to collect 1500 points of X-Wing.

Or am I?

4- My name is Stone and I'm a Star Warsaholic.5- My friends don't want to learn detailed rules.

Second, the other guys are doing a great job of explaining your other questions, so I'll just focus on these two points.

If you like Star Wars, and your friends like Star Wars, you're already going to love this game.

I love Star Wars, and had seen this game at various stores, but never bought it because of the price, and the price of buying a bunch of models. The my wife got it for me on Christmas, and I was convinced that I wouldn't like it. She actually had to beg me to play, because I had skimmed through the rules, and thought it was gonna be really short, and not very fun.

The first night, we played by the simple rules, then eventually got an "advanced" game going.

I bought a second core set the next day.

Since then, I've introduced the game to about 6 of my friends, 4 of which play fairly often (The other two have sweaty teenager hands, so they can buy their own sets!). There are a fair amount of rules, but in no way is it 40k amount of rules.

That makes it really enjoyable to teach to friends!

**edit** fixed stupid auto-correct typo.

That sounds like my initial reaction too.

The rules are not complicated. At all. Heroclix is about 30 times more complicated. Magic is moreso. Warhammer is even worse. I teach the kids I work with X-wing in a sitting and they understand the rules completely. Get your friends to play a few games and they'll start to understand that.

I looked at DZC before and I can tell you right now, X-Wing will be cheaper. Maybe not by a lot, but it does look like their stuff is on the high end of the price point.

It's the same price for a X-Wing expansion as it is a unit in DZC. But the model count in X-Wing is a lot lower, so unless you want to spend the money to collect everything X-Wing will be cheaper, and faster since you don't have to paint.

It also has more accessible rules so easier to get your friends into it.

Best piece of advice I can give if you're not sure is go to your local Games Store and try both out. I live in London and both games are played at Dark Sphere week in week out, so you could call in and chat to gamers and try them out.

For me this is the best game I've played in years. Set up time is quick, ships are simple to use and great to look at, plus unlike many other game you can build your squadron however you want, there are no ships you have to have. Rules are simple even with the more advanced rules plus if there are new rules for new ships they come with the ship. Welcome to the game and the community I hope you'll stay :-)

This may be a pro or con for you:

Especially when it comes to competitive play, X-Wing is a squad-building game. I think most of us spend far more time thinking about what squads we'd like to play and fine-tuning our card selections than we do moving ships around on the tabletop and rolling dice.

If you like squad-building, I think you'll love what this game has to offer.

Don't worry. I'm not mad enough to collect 1500 points of X-Wing.

Or am I?

Sigh. Just for fun I worked up the point cost for everything I have. Came up with 650 for Rebels and 802 for Imperials, and that was before I picked up Imperial Aces and a second shuttle.

I guess I am mad enough.

I think the hardest thing to teach is proper squad building.

So as an ex Warhammer player that made the switch to X-wing here are a couple of highlights.

1- the player community seems to be 100 times better then warhammer. ( where I have been threaten with death for playing it at a different store in my town) I have had nothing but positive things to say about X-wing. Everyone is nice on the boards and in person willing to help make the game better.

2- the cost is much cheaper then warhammer. If you get a starter and 3 expend (1 x-wing from base, 1 x-wing exp and two 2-wings) you have an army that can win nationals for about 95 retail or 60 ebay. I personally have dropped closure to 550 but have just about everything I want and every config I can see running in a toury for both sides. If you stick with emp or rebels it's about 300-400 depending on if you get the epic ships. And your set for about year. Cost after that is about 100 each year. Much cheaper then warhammer (my tau army was closure to 1500 for unit)

3- my wife does not like complex games and she can play x-wing after 30 minutes of explaining.

I did not play a game until my first torny and learned how to play in the first round. After that I went 2-2.

4- the ships look amazing!

5- I can carry everything I own in two laptop bags and one man purse. Most have gotten it to a single tackle box.

The only two things, I dislike are the tokens there are a ton of them. FFG seems not to give a lot of info on release dates.

X-wing is the only game that allows you to relive your childhood and push miniatures of your favorite Star Wars toys around a table, with other grown adults.

Thank you everyone! So much positivity I'm feeling positively positive!

Back in my 40K days I enjoyed list building, plotting and scheming. Hours spent squad building holds no horror for me. Can't promise a smart or sensible list, but I'm sure I'll learn what works by the 52,789th time my list get's wiped from the board.

No wife trouble yet. But I am exchanging smiles with a pretty lady so that could factor into the decision soon. Will have to ask her if she likes Star Wars.

To my fellow Stone who is numbered 37 I can only agree. I literally grew up with Star Wars. Dune held second place in my affections but Star Wars was always the best.

Thank you everyone! So much positivity I'm feeling positively positive!

Its the X-Wing Miniatures forum. We aren't going to tell you the game sucks. :P
