Further expansion books

By Grobb, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I disagree about the arguments being said that there needs to be a combat focused edge (no pun intended) to this because it's "Star Wars" and not "Star Peace". Well yeah, that's true, but correct me if I am wrong, didn't Dungeons and Dragons not always have dungeons...or even dragons?

Point is, people look for different things and you can't always focus on the combat side of things.

However, I personally think that the argument that things are combat focussed is a little stupid. Dangerous Covenants focused on it because it is the sourcebook for the HIRED GUN.

Furthermore, more weapons, attachments and vehicles help add variety to the world and its nice that most of the weapons/vehicles introduced in each sourcebook is appropriate for the theme of that book.

I don't disagree that Dangerous Covenants focusing on it was appropriate. However I believe that the next couple book should focus on making the more-traditionally-noncombat Careers (e.g. Colonist and Technician) sexier. Bounty Hunters are already plenty sexy enough.

Oh I agree. I'm just saying I don't think people should be so critical at this point.

Simply saying "WEG did it this way, so that's how it should be done!" really doesn't hold any water. While WEG did create a large chunk of the initial EU, things have changed and expanded over the years since WEG published their last Star Wars supplement. The FFG design team has shown they're quite willing to break with "tradition," so I wouldn't suggest holding one's breath in the hopes that they're going to slavishly adhere to how WEG did things.

Stupid aside - many, many moons ago someone in my group knew someone at WotC, giving us an opening to get in on the original playtest for D20 Star Wars back in '99. WEG had just folded and there was still much wailing and gnashing from the old guard going around. Apparently a great deal of the feedback they got was "This is stupid! WEG didn't do it like this!" and so on. We were amongst the most constructive of the D6'ers - so grinching about the olden days (which really, I don't see much of around here) is nothing new.

(Ouch, and you want to talk a game that needed polish. The first pass at starship combat was unplayable!)

Wasn't the original D20 Star Wars the one where the blast doors on the Trade Federation ship were stronger than the entire ship (in hardness and hit points)?

Andy Fischer said they have mapped out what is going in what book ahead of time. So it sounds like they have a solid road map and schedule. I am sure we will see what this schedule will be like over the next few months.

Honestly I buy most of the FFG Star Wars books I have a priority order for what I go hunting for. First new ships, weapons, and vehicles. Second new talent trees, third new location data.

That being said I will like whatever career book comes next I'm sure it will have plenty of goodies in all three areas. I would love the tech book to be next in the hope that it includes more extensive ship modification rules. (Say rules for removing non-weapon systems from ships and adding hyperdrives, and maybe shields to ships rather than just upgrading existing ones) Plus it could have an interesting mix of ships. On one hand I could see advanced prototypes appearing in a tech book. But I could also see ships like Uglies, Interceptor Frigates, and other ship classes which are either common modifications of existing ships or patched together from multiple ships appearing in a tech book.

I'll be happy to see any and all myself. Still, I think the next book, if it comes out in July, should be a good career to tie all three books together. Bounty Hunters were pretty universal across the series so maybe them. Like I said, any will be welcome.

Ok, a little thread necromancy, but has any new information come out about the possibility of a Tech book? My search came up empty.

Nothing yet.

Someone on Reddit may have slipped a name, and associated implication that the Technician book is next:

Hold Together, the Technician sourcebook.

Most likely just trolling though, as I doubt FFG staff or playtesters would be so loose with info.

Yeah, find that hard to believe, Take it with a HUUUUUUGE grain of salt.

mmmm I have lots of Time on my hands.. Disability medical leave...

Wonder if there is anyway I can get into the Playtest group

Oh, I do, don't worry about that! Thought it was worth pointing out however.

:)

Sure. I have two openings, but the commute from Utah to Florida might be a bit much for you.

Hmm, Florida you say? Whereabouts? :)

West end of Kissimmee, fairly close to Celebration.

Celebration??? Isn't that the town that Disney envisioned as the perfect city?

I read about it somewhere that it was supposed to be really creepy... Is it?

Yep, it's the Disney town. It's not really creepy, but everything there is a bit pricey. It's also not what I'd call a city, more of a small town. There are several businesses on the outskirts that are empty, so it might not be doing quite as well as planned.

Allright, when I read about, it seemed extremely Lynchian!
