Now is a great time to jump in. There's a huge tournament forming up next month, here are the details: http://teamcovenant.com/mrfroggies/2014/04/10/x-wing-galacti... . Newcomers have always had a great time joining these tournaments, and our pool of vassal players is forming a huge family. It has been a long road since late 2012.

I'm kind of torn on this. On the one hand I play 1-2 games on vassal pretty much every day, and kind of feel bad I didn't sign up for the tourney that just ended.

On the other hand I don't always have the best playing experiences on there. Whereas my LGS is a good mix of elite, average, and beginner players, on vassal it seems like it's mostly elite, a decent amount of average, and the occasional beginner. When you combine that with the vassal dice that like to ruin your day at the worst times it's very tough to have a winning record on there.

I went 5-2 in my local store championships, but I could easily see myself losing every game in this tourney.

Ponder this further, I will.

As a beginner to X-Wing and to the Vassal system generally, I've found this mod just awesome. I'm getting so much more practice in than would otherwise be possible given work and kid raising duties and am playing in two online tournaments (including the one above). At the very least, its great for practicing your movements etc - and I've had some great and really close games - including with Muon just this morning - an epic battle, broken up by diaper changes on both sides and went to the last ship each.

Great fun; highly recommended.

I installed vassal, but I can't seem to figure out what everything does/ am too lazy to search through help documents to figure out how it ll works....

My innate hatred of rng's stops me from participating. I've been screwed too many times (inc. on Vassal) in online stuff to be bothered with any of them any more. It's a **** shame too, as I'd love to get games in (any time of the day or night) with others out there in the world, but I don't have the patience to put up with the rng's.

...rng's?

Random Number Generators

They redid the number generator with this version. It now has a more even result between focus, evade, and attack results.

Really? I'll have to make sure to watch a game and take note of the results during the game. I really would like to play, if for no reason other than to make up my own personal short-fall of real life games.

I seriously need to find a good tutorial for Vassal. I downloaded it for the first time yesterday and it completely lost me :D

Doing a hands-on guide for playing on Vassal seems like the next logical step. I'll be working on it too.

In the mean time, there's an outdated one here: http://www.afewmaneuvers.com/topic/1804-article-another-guide-to-playing-x-wing-on-vassal/

It's outdated because it doesn't know the existence of a few very useful time saving features which have been added since.

This page contains the explanations of what's been done about the dice, in the comments section below the post itself:

Thanks Mu0n! I'll get reading now.

Im a new player. This makes it sound like i can play a pickup game almost anytime? Is that correct? I havent use vassal before but it could come in handy as id like to try some local tournaments. Is vassal difficult to get up and going?

I added a hands-on playing guide, same address. Hopefully, this will help vault the barrier of entry for new players.
