Switching Careers

By Ya La, in Rogue Trader Gamemasters

Hey there!

I thought I'd bring this over to a more general topic. How would you handle the switch from one career to another? If let's say, one of your players inhereted the warrant of trade in the event that the rogue trader met some unfortunate end. Or if a rogue trader stepped down and took another role on the ship.

One of two ways.

1) Don't. The Arch Militant (for example) who gets the warrant is still an Arch Militant who happens to be a Rogue Trader, but he doesn't have the experience or background to suddenly have the Rogue Trader leadership skills.

2) Create an Alternate Career rank for becoming a Rogue Trader. Have them take that.

Depends on the level of the group and PC. I can think of two additional options to the above mentioned ones.

Note: To be the Warrant Holder, you need not be the in the RT career as Annaamarth mentioned.

3) If just starting out and little experience has been gained (still Rank 1 or low Rank 2), talk if over with the group that you have decided to let player A change to a new career at no expense. Also allow anyone else to change careers within the next couple of sessions at no charge (meaning, they keep the same name, description, stats [slightly modified depending on background] and maybe gear to an extent, but not skills, talents or traits as these will change with the new career). After that, they will need to create a whole new character from scratch.

4) If everyone is above Rank 2, then probably a new character should be created.

5) Instead of trying to make an Alternate Career from scratch, allow them to take any Skills/Talents (within reason), as Elite Advances (having a Missionary taking Maglav Grave just because is definitely not a good reason). Or, look for an already pre-existing alternate career that meets their needs.

Errata: Change "two" to "three." It appears I can't count.

Lets go with this, if he's inclined he'll probably take charm and commerce as elite advances but that'll be the end of it and otherwise yeah he'll just continue along his original path.
