I plan on being there.

What's the cutoff on number of players for going from 4 rounds to 5?

Also, I assume since we're starting at noon that there is no lunch break. Will there be a dinner break, or just play through and break between the swiss and elim rounds?

I assume that people with Byes still have to show up in time for the start of the event? Byes = lunch break. :)

Great questions Paul.

We will only be running 4 rounds of swiss and then a cut to the top 8. For some reason it won't let me edit the original post.

We will do a break between swiss and the final rounds.

If you have a bye from a store championship, you must still register on time and be there for the start of the tournament. Everyone should be there when I go over the tournament info right before the first round begins. Once the first round begins, you can head out for lunch if you have a first round bye.

I'm a little sad about only having 4 rounds, but it's understandable. That means the swiss will end probably around 6pm, then a dinner break, then the finals will end around... 11ish. A long day of X-Wing for the finalists!

Paul

Can I not convince you to cut to top 16 since that's where the unique prizes start? It would mean 4 rounds of swiss, and then 4 rounds afterwards... and at 90min (75min play + 15min setup in between) / round, plus an hour break after swiss, it would end 1am... But I think I speak for most people that would be vying for that top 16 spot that I'd much rather play elimination games to earn my stuff than just have it given out based on strength of schedule.

Paul, I want to run 5 rounds of swiss. However, The store is only open until 9pm. If I can get them to agree to stay open later, then we'll do 5.

We'll only cut to the top 16 if we get more than 64 players. If not, we'll cut to the top 8.

The elimination rounds are going to go past 9pm. Are they ok with staying open late to do this, or are the top 4 people going to retire to a hotel room to finish the event? :)

Paul

The store is willing to stay open as late as we need them to in order to finish this tournament. FFG has clarified how many rounds will be played.

up to 16 players - 4 rounds of swiss with a cut to the top 4

17 to 32 players - 5 rounds of swiss with a cut to the top 8

33 to 64 players - 6 rounds of swiss with a cut to the top 8

65 to 128 players - 6 rounds of swiss with a cut to the top 16

more than 128 players - 7 rounds of swiss with a cut to the top 16

That means that we will run 6 rounds with a cut to the top 8 or 16 depending on attendance.

Hot ****... 6 rounds @ 90 minutes means it'll be 9pm before Swiss is over (call it 10pm because I'm assuming there'd have to be a dinner break in there). If it's a cut to the top 16, starting at noon, the top table won't conclude till ~4am!

Can I suggest moving the start time back to like 10am (registration at 9)? That would still be late enough for people driving to Monroeville in the morning (a 4hr drive means leaving the house around 5:30)... it puts the stop time at 7... er 8 with a break for the swiss folks... and then 3-4 more games afterwards puts it at 11:30-1am. Although that method would likely require a lunch and dinner break, so another hour lost puts the championship table ending at 12:30/2am... Still much more reasonable than 4am though.

Realistically, a round is 90 minutes in swiss, and about 80 in elimination. You call time at 75, people finish the round they are on, they report the winner, you have to come up with the next round's pairings, and people need to get to their table and start getting ready. With a noon start time, 17-32 players will end swiss at 7:30. 33+ will end swiss at 9, like you say.

I suggest, instead of a dinner break, order pizzas for the top 8/16 and have them arrive at the end of swiss. Spend only 15-20 minutes taking a break to eat, and then get right back into it. If someone has a dietary restriction that means they can't eat pizza, grab something else. It's just the first thing that came to mind.

It might be too late to change the start time, since they've advertised the noon start. Besides, moving it earlier adds a lunch break, which removes a chunk of the benefit of an earlier start time. If you minimize the dinner break to get started with the elimination rounds by 9:15-9:30, you'll end around 1:30am. Still a rough day, but large single-day events always are.

Agree, I'd personally recommend against changing the start time--I've made my accommodation/travel plans based on the published start time (and am sure others have done the same) and while I could theoretically adjust my personal plans, people who have booked flights or the like could be stuck in a real bind.

Better to just have caffeine on hand and prepare for a long day!

Edit: Also, am I correct in assuming that all of the single elimination rounds will be timed at 75 minutes (and not, for example, a final that is untimed)?

FFG has changed the way the rounds will go. This is the plan (pray they don't alter it any further).

If we have 32 players or less, we will run 4 75-minute swiss rounds.

If we have between 33 and 64 players, we will run 5 75-minute swiss rounds.

65 players or more we will run 6 75-minute rounds.

Once the swiss rounds are over, we will cut to the top 8.

The start time will not change. The store is set on it. We can discuss food in the later rounds, before the event begins.

Does Mr Nice Guy (or any other PGH stores for that matter) have a regular game night for X-wing? I just picked up a few Rebel ships and am looking for a place to play them casually.

I don't know if they have a regular X-wing night or not. I will check when I am there on Saturday.

I am creating a Facebook group for the Monroeville, PA X-wing Regional. I'll be posting pictures and giving updates on what's going on all day on May 3rd. Click to join the group so that you can get updates as they happen.

Bump

Regional day!

I'd like to thank everyone for making this a great regional. I enjoyed meeting, talking, and playing with all ya'll. And it's nice to continue to see that even as the events become more important, everyone still maintains the fly casual environment.

Was very saddened to not be able to make it on Saturday--unfortunately work combined with the 6+ hour drive from NYC just made it unfeasible. Seems like everyone had an awesome time though!
