'The Terror of the Tides' spoiler

By Hybrid, in CoC General Discussion

So now we see a little of what Marius has been up to.

Nice article and interesting cards. Pagan Hall is gonna be a force! Nice artwork as well.

Shadow Sorceress is interesting if not playable but I don't care for the artwork. It's not dark

or Mythosy enough. The Terror of the Tides seems like a nice little surprise.

This Asylum Pack will be the first new release for our second local Adventure league

and what a start we will have! sorpresa.gif

I agree those cards look pretty **** powerfull !

Even the sorceress interested me a lot, as she is the perfect addition to Opener of the gate or Chant of Thoth. Yog is the faction which own predominance on this arcane struggle. The effect seems well balanced, as it gives you an advantage based on the struggle won. In case of a lose, nothing happen and your whole combo stuff to get back cards in hand is off.

Sweet cards. Despite him not found of the Cthulhu character : I feel like there was no room for little characters for Cthulhu. Nothing but big monsters and a lack of good 1 or 2 costers since redditing (emerging deep one is too costy because of it's effect!). It needs to be reconsider in the whole new environment, and I'm waiting to see what futur will bring to Innsmouth !

Well, that's how the faction is. Big, powerful monsters, but a lack of early game. 3x DOA and 3x Sacrificial Offerings means you have to take control in the early game. Still, the Terror can be played for 3, at Action: speed and is far above the curve, stats wise.

It's the drawbacks in addition to the strengths of the factions make their playstyle and theme. Cthulhu never should have been about efficient rush decks, but more about a battle of attrition.

Nice teasers, Marius! And very interesting cards.

But I'm confused about how the rules allow Terror of the Tides to be played WITHOUTa resource match. Even though it is an action, I would think that payment through exhausting a domain would use the normal rules for playing cards.

Nope; Like any triggered ability that has payment in it's cost, you don't need a resource match to use it. You are not playing the Terror of the Tides, you are triggering his ability to put it into play. - See also: Playing vs Putting into play.

It still is a triggered ability like found on, for example:

-- Agency --
Paul LeMond, Tormented Psychic
-------------------------------
Type : Character
Cost : 1
Skill : 1
Icons :
Subtype : Government.
Game Text:

Action: Pay 1 to choose a character. Until the end of the phase, Paul LeMond gains all of that character's printed icons.
Flavor text: Paul had dreamt for months about the man he called Nophru-Ka, a name which sounded disturbingly familiar to Armitage.

Illustrator: Jessica Van Hulle
Collector's Info: CS F4

The only difference is that the ability is activated in your hand, instead of in play. No resource match required. No Operations Phase required. Just a big ugly bug with lots of icons, skill and toughness.

Thanks for the clarification. I like the big ugly bug.

Well, I know there is a new direction for CTHULHU faction, but I remember of tchotcho'sand shoggoth twsha. Even the knight of the void was a good addition, as, at those times, cthulhu was able to slow the opponent's aggression but was able to mark it's points.

There are differences between stopping rush strategies and leave the faction basis to huge characters. Maybe a good 1 coster should fix this deal, and leave the problem behind us. But actually, if the deck do not give you the 6 cards that might slow the opponent, you loose against lots of well tuned kind of Miaska/synd deck !
