New squad

By Popn618, in X-Wing

What are your thoughts on this squad make up? I'm newish to playing so in sure my playing strategies are outdated or untraditional.

Horton Salm (38)\

Y-Wing (25), R2-D2 (4), Ion Cannon Turret (5), Shield Upgrade (4)\

Chewbacca (62)\

YT-1300 (42), Veteran Instincts (1), Assault Missiles (5), Luke Skywalker (7), Mercenary Copilot (2), Millennium Falcon (1), Shield Upgrade (4)}

Thanks for the advice!

Horton is kind of a waste of points for using the turret as you will only occationally be at range 2.

I would drop a few of these upgrades and try to get in a third ship.

Horton->Gold +7pts
-Shield Upgrade +4pts

-Shield Upgrade +4pts

-Assault Missiles +5pts

-Veteran Instincts +1pt

And that is a Rookie.

That depends on your piloting.

I think it's a decent list. But I also think you'd be better off dropping a few of those upgrades for the sake of another ship.

Right,

IMO even with experience, As a turret pilot he is not a great value for the extra 7 points. Expecially since I like my turret pilots with a lower PS.

Yeah only getting 2 attacks per round is rough, it can work but you rely too heavily on luck and denying your opponent shots. I'd rather Dutch to hand out free TLs.

...Also, shield upgrade is almost useless on chewie, since he can't be dealt face up damage, might as well just take a hull upgrade. The only time it would matter is if your opponent was running saboteur or something else that could flip face down damage up.

The idea would be to noobishly spam with the ion while regenerating the shield on the y and keeping it as a support ship. Then pounding with falcon taking advantage of the 360 degree firing arcs on both ships.

Two-ship lists never have enough firepower to do well, unless both ships are Firesprays or Falcons.

Especially when one is an Ion Turret ship...

I would cut Horton for 2 cheaper ships, and scrap the shield upgrade for a hull upgrade(or don't have one. It's expensive. Drop the Missile. Ordnance is risky and overcosted. You might manage Biggs and another X-wing, or an X-wing and a cheap turreted Y-wing.(Allowing for minimum collection here.)

He might just be wanting 2 ships to make it easier to fly. I know a newer player on vassal who did the same thing for awhile until he was more comfortable flying.

I hate making people change their squads drastically, so I will only offer 1 suggestion. Trade R2-D2 for a proton torpedo. It will give you a good alpha strike, plus R2-D2 isn't the best on ywings because they only have 2 green moves as oppossed to 3 on xwings.
