Taking Initiative - Deck

By -nebur-, in Strategy and deck-building

Hi,

ffg_taking-initiative-trg.jpg

I like this card since I saw it the first time...but never played it.

So I decided to build a deck around this card and it beat my expectations.

Before I list my deck here, I want to know, if someone else used it in some cases.

---> I have to mention that my deck is only very good in 2-4 player-games (best in 4p).

Only played it once in a 1 hero solo deck of Hurluin. Figured it could be nice to have in opening hand, but then pretty much useless.

This card shines in a deck full of 4 cost attachments!

Otherwise it's crap.

there are not many 4-cost attachments ;)

ok, here is my deck:

Taking Initiative_Balin, Sam, Theodred

Starting Threat: 25

Hero
1x Balin
1x Sam Gamgee
1x Théodred

Ally
2x Beorn
3x Gandalf
2x Descendant of Thorondor
Attachment
3x Good Meal
3x Resourceful

3x Tome of Atanator
3x King Under the Mountain
1x Path of Need
3x Steward of Gondor

Event
3x Taking Initiative
3x Grim Resolve

3x Well-Equipped
3x Ever Vigilant
3x Campfire Tales
3x Sneak Attack
3x Hidden Cache
3x Strength of Arms
3x Second Breakfast

--> If another player has Imladris Stargazer, this deck will show you real power. :D

Yes, it is a very very powerful deck. Sure. I have played it.

Only it needs another player with imladris. But it is not a problem, all the lotr-lcg is multiplayer.

Really: very powerfull deck. Book to recycle it, 2nd breakfast to recycle book..., ready imladris effects, etc. I love it

Looks interesting, but your going to need to explain how to play this deck, since it is not entierly obvious.

Beorn ally can only be brought into play through sneak attack?

How important is Taking Initative?

What quest do you play this on?

I mostly played it togther with mndela...he used a Caldara-Deck with Imladris Stargazer (and Zigil Miner for example).

- drawing --> King under the Mountain, Campfire Tales, Well-equipped, Gandalf and Taking Initiative

- ressources --> Steward (not needed so much but also good for other players), Theodred, Hidden Cache, Good Meal

- enemies --> Sneak Attack (Gandalf, Beorn, Thorondor), Taking Initiative

With Tome of Atanator you can recycle all the events you need (depending on the situation).

Second Breakfast gives you Tome back...and so on...

All the readying-stuff makes the combo with stargazer perfect and also useable for your co-player.

Is it really Taking Inititiative deck? Or is it very good deck with taking initiative? Only 17 cards in your deck have higher printed cost than 3. And are the 2 cards and 2 damage really worth it?

Beorn and Descendent of Thorondor are both Tactics... so the only way they can come into play is Sneak Attack, so they'll leave play quickly. Gandalf only lasts one turn no matter how he enters play. You don't need to have 3+ cost cards You'll rarely have more than 1 or 2 allies in play at a time. Drawing 2 cards and dealing 2 damage is amazing for a "free" card, but the fact that you need to discard a card and completely change your deck to avoid playing allies kinda makes it hard to justify, but if you're getting it to work, why not?

Obviously, more players covers for the weakness of fewer allies and a lot of this deck isn't about Taking Initiative anyway. It's also a support deck (passing off Steward of Gondor, Strength of Arms, Grim Resolve, Campfire Tales, etc). The fact that you're building around Taking Initiative actually enables you to use more support cards.

As a pure solo player I get headaches seeing that deck.

I`ve known, that you answer so <_<

You don`t need allies...please try this deck combined with Stargazer...you will be surprised.

You can use Beorn and Thorondor also for discard (Taking Initiative!!!, King under the Mountain and Well-equipped).

The problem in leadership-decks is card-drawing...so Taking Initiative is very good in my eyes

What quest do you play this on?

--> I think you can beat nearly every quest with it.

Nah, don't get me wrong, you have me already convinced that this deck works for multiplayer. It's just that 'm just unused to these kind of decks.

Does the partner deck also have Born Aloft? That way you could possibly include Faramir in your deck. Play him and turn him back to your hand when you wanna play "Taking Initiative".

? Born aloft send the ally to your hand.

But Gildor could be nice ^^

Dont like born aloft but Faramir is a nice idea...thanks for the tip.

I dont have 3 cost Cards in deck so it doesnt matter if i control 3 or 4 characters.

Gildor would be nice, but can't pay him and it's not worth to sneak him...

Edit: Faramir is amazing !!!

I can ready him and use the effect many times in the same phase, if needed.
