Colonel Vessery + Cluster Missiles.

If I am reading this interaction correctly, when Vessery fires a set of Cluster Missiles at an opponent who has been target locked by Vessery's ally, the following happens.

  1. Vessery spends a Target Lock to declare the attack
  2. Vessery rolls the attack dice for the first attack
  3. Vessery gains a Target Lock on the defender
  4. Vessery spends the Target Lock
  5. Defender rolls evade dice
  6. Vessery rolls the attack dice for the second attack
  7. Vessery gains a Target Lock on the defender
  8. Vessery spends the Target Lock
  9. Defender rolls evade dice
  10. Defender cries from the massive damage taken.

Does this seem accurate to y'all? I want to point it out here before posting in the main forum.

This seems legit, although it also require Vessery to have the Target Lock to begin with (in order to use the missiles), as well as the defender being Target Locked by an ally.

Looks good to me.

Looks good to me.

I second that.

His ability works during every attack. He does not get a gunner. Not yet, anyway.

Yep, it works just like you said.

Let's try the above against a particular opponent. The target is Tarn Mison with R7.

IIRC R7 allows to spend a TL when defending to reroll attack dice.

  1. Vessery spends a Target Lock to declare the attack
  2. Tarn Mison gains a Target Lock
  3. Vessery rolls the attack dice for the first attack
  4. Vessery gains a Target Lock on the defender
  5. Tarn Mison and R7 spend the Target Lock
  6. Vessery spends the Target Lock
  7. Defender rolls evade dice
  8. Tarn Mison gains a Target Lock
  9. Vessery rolls the attack dice for the second attack
  10. Vessery gains a Target Lock on the defender
  11. Tarn Mison and R7 spend the Target Lock
  12. Vessery spends the Target Lock
  13. Defender rolls evade dice
  14. Vessery cries because of zero damage

Does it work like that?

Does Tarn get declared as the target of the second attack? Does the second attack of clusters even declare a target at all? I think so.

  1. Vessery cries because of zero damage

Not necessarily. The dice Tarn/R7 would want to be rerolling are the [hit] and [crit] results, which are different than the results Vessery would be wanting to reroll. I'd say it would make damage less likely, but the combo certainly does not guarantee zero damage. It does open up a very interesting chain of interaction possibilities in the combat phase though!

Dice can only be rerolled once. Though you could force a re-roll of the original hits.

Defender rerolls hit/crit, attacker rerolls eye/blank. All dice get rerolled. All of them. No exceptions.

Which is what I said. In any case rerolling all the dice does not guarantee zero damage.

Secondary weapon use is declared in Step 2. Clusters make two attacks from that point, so only one target selection, so Tarn will only get one lock.

This is why Clusters can't select different targets, and one half of the Dark Curse/Turret paradox I was so annoyed at last year. But Robert confirmed direct from Kniffen that you do indeed pick them in Step 2, and just sort of handwave past hte contradictions that creates.

Maybe i'm reading it wrong, but if you spend the target lock to use the missiles, the defender would no longer have a red target lock token, therefore he would not be able to gain a new target lock.

the defender would no longer have a red target lock token...

You're right, it depends on someone else having a TL on the target. But that assumption is listed in the OP.

Is this the generic R7 Astromech we're looking at? If so, is there a more complete card/text reveal? I wasn't aware there was one... but I may have missed it. Thanks!

Yes, generic R7. No, nothing more than the game trade magazine spoiler .

There is a similar interaction with Airen Cracken and cluster missiles, especially next to Dutch.

1. Cracken uses Push the Limit to focus and target lock.

2. Cracken spends target lock to activate cluster missiles. He can focus if he chooses.

3. Cracken grants Dutch a free action.

4. Dutch target locks, allowing Cracken to acquire a target lock.

5. Cracken may spend target lock on the second cluster missile attack.

6. Cracken grants Dutch or another ship another free action.
