Stim Application and Droids

By Venters, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

So I presented this to my GM,

I suggested that maybe an overclock talent in one of the Technician Specializations could be made.

He said he didn't feel comfortable with creating a new talent and said just go down the Doctor Specialization and use emergency repair packs instead.

Can I make a case for using a Mechanics Check instead of a Medicine Check for this then to my GM?

I certainly wouldn't have you use a Medicine check for it.

I've been begging for a droid repair specialization for some time. Doctors are great to have in the party, but probably useless to the droid. I wouldn't be surprised if a Technician splat book included a doctor-like role for droids.

I agree, and I'm hoping for a Tinkerer type spec. I don't know if it could be rolled into K's idea or should be separated but in addition I'd like to see the whole notion of 'invention' addressed, since it's spoken of indirectly. Seems like a perfect fit in with a droid Dr. imo.

As long as you've got GM buy-in, I don't see it as being too much of an inherent game-breaker to allow the talent to be used on droids, subbing Mechanics for Medicine and Emergency Repair Patches/Kits for Stimpacks.

However, one thing to bear in mind is that droids are often rather specialized within their area of expertise, most often having spent a good portion of their starting XP on boosting at least one Characteristic to a 4. So being able to further jack-up that Characteristic, particularly if the droid is focused on combat. It might be something to watch out for.

A lot of organics are also rather specialized, particularly the damage-dealing Careers/Specs (and most especially Marauders, in my experience). But changing a 4 to a 5 or a 5 to a 6 isn't going to break the game, even if it makes that particular character better at fighting. An extra G or turning an existing G into a Y isn't the biggest deal, it's when that comes from multiple sources (Stim App, Enhance, cyber) that it's abusive, imo.
