Jake Farrell + PTL

By rlcode, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Quick question, though I know Jake Farrell isn't officially released yet.

The wording between Jake and PTL is a bit fuzzy to me, so I'm curious which gets resolved in which order.

Action #1: Any old action.

PTL

Action #2: Focus

Do I immediately receive a stress token . . .

("perform 1 free action shown in your action bar. Then receive a stress token."

OR

Can I "perform a free boost or barrel roll action." and THEN receive a stress token."

I'm sure it's the former, but obviously it's not exactly clear which resolves first, and obviously it'd be AMAZING to be able to . . . oh, say, Maneuver, Boost, and then barrel roll in an A-wing.

Or use Kyle Katarn or Airen, or (insert any number of situations) to fit in 3 actions into the combat phase.

You can trigger PtL off either action, but if you do it off his first then you would indeed resolve PtL fully, including the stress, before moving on to his free BBR. So, you'd fail it.

The solution is to focus as the base action, use Jake's ability, then trigger PtL off his boost or barrel roll. We were talking about this a week or two back, and nobody could come up with a situation where you needed to do things in a different order.

That's what I'd anticipated. That's too bad.

In terms of a situation where you needed to do things in a different order, there are a LOT.

The first is that a maneuver, barrel roll, and boost doesn't produce the same results as a maneuver, boost, and THEN barrel roll. It's not much, I'll grant you, but it IS enough to prevent an overlap, and in some cases, it's enough to push you out of a pursuer's firing arc.

Another situation would be being able to lock AND move out of a target's firing arc. It'd be nice to be able to use that first action as a lock, ptl, then you could focus and barrel roll/boost for a better angle.

Or heck, ANY non-bar action would create some problems--as ptl only works for barred actions. SO if you're using Expose, wingman, squad leader, etc. then you've got to use it as the first action.

I agree--it's not exactly a clear cut scenario. But I think there will be situations where it would be helpful.

I assumed ptl would put a stop to it, but oh well.

Thanks for your input--I appreciate it!

Jake can't do the barrel roll first no matter what. That has nothing to do with PtL.

I realized I did miss a situation in there, though. If you use PtL to generate a Focus action, then Jake's ability can trigger off that, and will resolve before you get to the "Get a stress" part of PtL. Sorry if that was confusing - was trying to rush a post at work. Not that I'm getting anything done today with the Defender reveal :)

So you can, say, Lock, PtL to Focus, Focus triggers barrel roll, then you get the PtL stress. That opens up a lot more options.

hey im new to the game im sorry if this sounds stupid whats PTL?

PTL = Push The Limits

The ONLY basic time I could see wanting to use PtL first and then Jake's ability will be Boost the Focus into a Barrel Roll. If you Focus first you could use that BR and then Boost but there are times you wouldn't want to do that.

*ignore*

I had a dumb.
