I've noticed a distinct lack of Y-wings in people's squad lists. Not owning any yet and therefore not knowing what they can do, I just have to ask... Are they really that bad?
No love for the Y?
No they are not bad, one of my favourite ships and with a 360 degree turret they can prove to be highly useful in a support role. They may lack some of the B wings flexibilty but are still very durable. Both Dutch and Horton have very good skills and when the new astromech arrives they will be able to get an EPT. Even a squad of 4 Golds + Ion Cannon is a solid list that takes alot of hits to destroy.
Their maneuver dial isn't great but with a simple R2 unit it is improved greatly (all speed 1 and 2 moves become green), the turret also makes maneuvering for a shot much easier.
Plus they just look cool.
So on behalf of all other Y wing fans... buy one soon, you won't regret it!
Edited by DB DraftOn your reply, I just ordered 2!
There's an astromech that grants EPT's?
In the Transport set there is an astromech called R2-D6 that grants an EPT slot as long as your PS is more than 2.

There will be in the near future.
I'm a big fan of Y-wings I almost always find a place for at least one in my squadrons. It really adds quite an amount of control element to the capabilities of the list.
Gold + Ion cannon + Engine is my favorite configuration, with the engine upgrade they are surprisingly agile as well
Just played Horton and his still is really good. It is like a target lock light.

I've bought 7 including 2 special gold painted ones. And my sentiments on the Y follow this posters thoughts as well!

Y-Wing + Ion or BT + R5 Astromech + Hull Upgrade = woohoo!
One of my favourite ships to take.
The folks at my local tournament scene hate Y-wings. But that's because I won 3 tournaments in a row using 4 or 5 Y-wings and took second in two others! They made me promise to next time bring a list without Y-wings.
As discussed above, they are a great ship with lots of versatility. The only list that I have really struggled against using all Y-wings is the TIE swarm, and most other types of list have the same problem!
BBYY is tough as hell to crack too, a squad you likely cannot kill all of in a tourney. Especially when they are packing ion as well.
Dutch with Ion Cannon and 3 B's is plain evil
Personally, I love the Y-Wing. I practice with a friend who loves using TIE Interceptors and the 360 arc on the Ion Turret is great for shutting their maneuvering down while the stronger ships get around to attacking them.
They are fun. I prefer the Hawk, but ships with Turrets are comfortable to play with. It's great to not cae about which way you're facing with a clunky ship.
I just wish there was a 2 dice turret that worked at all ranges for 4 points...
Edited by AminarI use two Y-Wings along with an Outer Rim Smuggler and Jan Ors.
I almost never build a rebel list without a ywing with ion turret. They are tough and versatile, and a great counter to interceptors. Most underrated ship in the game, Imo.
I had been dubious about y's til I ran two w/ ions plus chewy and a handful of upgrades. The ties ability to zoom around and nip out of the field of fire is negated entirely and It. Is. Awesome!
Try:
Horton + proton x 2 + blaster turret
3 x rookie
Or just throw that Horton into any list for the lols.
I also love Dutch and Ion sprinkled in.
I love the Y-wing! There is no sweeter ride then a Gold with an ion turret; it is the Cadillac of the void. They are easy to fly, tough, and the element of control they can provide with ions pairs well with everything. Can't wait for the droids!
Edited by LordVoglDutch with Ion and R2 is about my favorite rebel ship. Ionize your enemy into your support who have that Target lock they need to light it up.
STAY ON TARGET (Hands out Target locks) Pure class.
Edited by berusplantsXXYY lists with ion turrets are alot of fun to fly. People just don't seem to use them as much. They're a good ship but they need support/protection from more agile ships to help them out.
I love the Y-wing! I like to fly a pair of them with ion turrets and an X-wing escort. I'm anxious to try the Z-95 as an escort fighter with them when I get some of them.
Y-wings kick butt. I rarely fly rebel without them and they are second only to the X-wing in my favorite ships list.
Their should be upgrade cards that make these Y-Wings full fleged A4s or S3s.
For A4 the card would alow the player to swap Y-Wing dial for X-Wing Dial, it would get a +1 hull but -2 shields and trade turret for cannon slot. Maybe even a +1 to primary weapon sine A4s had heavy-duty long range Laser cannons unlike the S3s reg blaster cannon. But for sure it should get to pick a fixed firing arc for cannon weapon.
