repaint..

By nuke556, in X-Wing

So I just picked up my imperial aces and the royal guard ties paint job is horrable. It is totaly missing paint in places. While I know FFGs CS is top i thought I would try my hand with a repaint and get a second 181st interceptor. Just like painting 15mm tanks just space ships.. Some questions for the other repainters.

1. What do you use to strip? Simple green? It works on plastic stuff so i figure it would work.

2. What colors? I am VERY bad at matching colors so when painting other stuff I dont tend to mix anything and just go with base colors.. Also with a base coat, I was thinking just a flat black primer

Any pics of some interceptor repaints would be awesome as well. Thanks.

Brake fluid works pretty well for stripping, if you think its necessary. Most people find they can just paint right over the existing paint.

Brake fluid will strip paint, but it will also soften and deform plastic if left in too long

I will second the opinion that these figs really don't need stripping, the existing paint is thin enough and the detail sharp enough that just a layer of primer should more than suffice

I tried simple green. Let it soak for 2 days. Did next to nothing.
Afterwards, I just painted over the existing coat on all future repaints and that worked just fine.

Some plastics, perhaps, but none that I've tried. I actually had one model soaking for over a year with no problems.

I have stripped two Firesprays with brake fluid successfully. No softening or dissolving at all.

I've never bothered to strip anything. I don't suggest it.

Thanks for the info on stripping. I'll just paint over it for now.

I would still photograph this and email FFG just to make them aware of the issue.

Yeah since they will probably send you another one, gratis.

too funny

Or...

just because that would be nice of you. Because you love Star Wars and the quality of the FFG line. Because it is forward thinking when concerning future QA checks prior to shipping.

Besides, how many other QA failures slip through the cracks and folks are not aware that they contact FFG with their concerns?

There's also a difference in model quality. I had one A-wing who was especially bad.

Also badly painted B-Wing with clogged up paint.

In 99% of the cases its good enough to paint over, but not always.

When painting models i stripped the paint off, for exactly that reason, might be some details are hidden below a bad stroke with the brush from the factory workers.

That was way before I was on these forums and way before I knew how FFG handles erronous models...

Oh man, imagine those poor people who spend day after day painting A-wings just so they can feed their 5 kids, only for us lot to come along and strip it all off.

Horrowing.

I took some pictures going to email them in a bit. good call on at least sending it to them..

This still leaves what colors to get close to the normal int paint job. Have piles of vallejo and the old GW stuff.
