Whisper's Intelligent Crew choice.

By Englishpete, in X-Wing

I am really thinking that with all the possibilities for moving that Whisper and Phantoms in general will have, an Intelligence Agent is ideal crew.

Being able to see where an opponent is going will be huge with the de-cloak action, then moving after that.

It seems to be the premier choice.

do we even know what whispers ability is, or any of the other Phantom pilots? or are you just speculation based on the upgrade slots?

I wouldn't call it "premier" - it may only have moderate effectiveness. We don't know whispers PS (unless I missed it) and he's a named pilot so he will be reasonably high (6+ I would imagine), therefore intelligence agent will only be useful on higher PS pilots that haven't moved yet when whisper does. Helpful? Sure in certain circumstances, but maybe not a "must have".

Whisper is PS7 and this may be more useful on the basic Phantom as you say.

I agree, The current meta is an average PS4,since Whisper is PS7 he will see where most ships are when the time comes. Now if there is no shift to higher with wave 4, Whisper will be fine where he is.

I think Intelligence Agent will usually be more useful on a low-PS Phantom than a high-PS Phantom.

I really think that Recon Spec will be Whisper's best bud. Focus for two tokens, make your 4-5 die attack early in the round, and get another focus, giving you three or two if you used one. Give him/her Advanced Cloaking Device, and along with those foci she has a free cloak action. That way, they won't want to attack Whisper, and if they have to, they'll miss. Next turn, decloak to position for another stomp, and repeat.

Ships like Whisper will be a centerpiece unit. I imagine a defensive crew (Rebel Captive?) will be useful.

I feel like WHisper will work as bait. Take it 1 Direction, and the rest in another. See what your opponent does. But A properly used WHisper will be 35points(Vet Instincts+FCS +whatever Adanced Cloaking costs(2-3). From there a swarm of two Academies, Backstabber and Dark Curse. They'll have to choose who they want at their flanks or split up and lose focus firing.

there's also a new crew card in with the phantoms - but i don't know if it's been spoiled anywhere - maybe it will be really cool with phantoms?

Not really sure why, but I imagined Whisper to be female. Kinda hard to say, since this isn't an actual pilot from any previously established media. Still... :3c

Just throw a navigator in there to really screw with the head of the opponent.

while in stealth, you got 4 defence dice but no means to modify them.

So how about the Flight Instructor?

Or use elusiveness and sensor jammer and screw with his attack (and it fits thematically :P )

Yes but thats 6 points and you will be stressed.

Sure, but I'm assuming here that you wouldn't trigger the elusiveness until after your attack, which combined with the AGP means you're cloaked again. Depending on the dial, flying a stressed Phantom does not concern me.

And at a little over 40 points, decked out, Whisper is not that much more expensive than an empty Boba Fett.

and your crew slot is still empty ... too bad Darth Vader don't work with fighters ;P

So how about Greedo?

With 4 base attack, it should be able to cripple the shields off a X-Wing and deliver a crit at range 3 ... just a thought :)

There's a greedy crew?

Mercenary Co-pilot - turn a hit to a crit at range 3

Intel agent will be great. With such a glass cannon ship, you'll NEED to know where every enemy ship is going to make the best decloak decision. There are still plenty of Wedge and Luke's out there after all. Not to mention, you won't have to fill your EPT slot with Veteran Instincts, which could be quite valuable.

That's why I'm leaning towards Navigator, look at the lay of the land, decide "nope, I'm going here now". And then have the SJ and an Elusive EPT to mess with his attack dice and still keeping your actions untouched.

And at a little over 40 points, decked out, Whisper is not that much more expensive than an empty Boba Fett.

An empty Boba Fett also has over twice Whisper's THP. Pumping lots of points in a craft that can potentially be taken out in one shot is a risky move.

I don't plan on being near anywhere my opponent's arcs.

Whisper is the consummate Stealth fighter. PS9 with VI to move last, Cloaking nastiness, shoot first, gain a focus token if you hit. Use advanced cloak to re-cloak immediately after shooting. You could even drop a hull upgrade or stealth on him/her.

Pricey, but will surpass even Fel in the ability not to get hit.

... and your crew choice is?
