HLC question

By Bjorn Rockfist, in X-Wing Rules Questions

I am correct in that the only way you can get a crit hit from a HLC is Merc Copilot right?

Had it come up the other day at a pay to play tourney where I was attacked they got 2 hits, a eye, and a blank. They proceeded to use the TL to re-roll the eye and blank and got 2 crits. I was then told ok you have 2 hits and 2 crits coming at ya.

Nope. Rerolls are not subject to the "turn all crits to hits" restriction that the initial roll is. This is covered in the FAQ:

Q: If a ship attacks with Heavy Laser Cannon,
can it modify attack dice to get a result?
A: Yes. All results on attack dice are immediately
changed to results after they are first rolled, and
then the dice may be modified as normal.
"Modified as normal" includes a TL re-roll.

Your opponent was right. HLC only convert crits to hits in the original attack roll. After that, any dice modification (including rerolls) keeps the new results.

So, you can commonly crit with HLC by:

- Using Merc copilot.

- Using marksmanship.

- Rerolling dice and getting critical hits on the reroll.

Amongst others...

Thank you for the info.
