Royal Guard

By AdmiralThong, in X-Wing

Who has played against or with 4x Royal Guard TIEs with PTL?

As much as I love Soontir Fel, I feel like this dishes out manuverability and hurt in equal measures. The Royal Guard kinda hit that sweet spot for everything you need and nothing you don't. Plus, PS6 across the board is nice when manuvering gets tight.

I played it exclusively the last week. It is pretty devastating if you work it right. Beat a double Falcon list, a TIE swarm, and XXBB list with it thus far. It allows you to do what Interceptors do well (fly as independent operators out of formation) and still have the speed to converge upon exposed targets in force. It lacks an obvious target and all ships are equally dangerous. The PTL Royal Guard is probably the best ship from Imperial Aces, generally speaking.

I wish I wouldn't have to own/store 6 Interceptor models to do this. I'm happy with 4. But the squad does look fun.

It is 4 interceptors...

Yes, but I'd have to buy another Imperial Aces to have enough Royal Guard Tie's

While I have yet to play with x4 RG's, I have played with 3 (one with Soontir Fel RG Upgrade card) with a supporting cast of 2 Bombers in a 150 point list and I must admit this is quite the fun set-up! The manueverability of the RG's aided by PTL plus an extra Shield upgrade is simply fantastic! Boosting and barrel-rolling around the game like it's nobody's business. I wasn't even much concerned about getting TL's on them as they have that ability to not be in the enemy LOS when it matters.

My biggest concern was the vulnerability of the hulls mixed with getting blocked. But I found that keeping the ships seperated from formations and allowing them room to be agile with the added upgrade of a Shield really made them devestating. Get them in close range and roll the red-dice of hurt and watch the Rebel's shields and hulls dwindle fast. Then boost and barrel roll out of the way and set up another attack. Great stuff!

Yeah, well some of us also got "stuck" with the Interceptors we bought pre-Imperial Aces and now have 7 or more. Great for big games, I guess. But the Royal Guard pilot (and title) were the big finds there. I also run 3 "tough" Interceptors (title, Hull, and Shield upgrades) for fun. Interceptors that can't be one-shotted. It's pretty enjoyable right up until you get the crit that strips your pilot abilities, lol.

This is basically my thoughts on it. You have lots of options as well. You can run them like a beefy Academy Pilot swarm, or break them into two elements of two for flanking.

LOL.....I have 13 Ints if you look at the 5 regular, 4 181st, and 4 Royal Guard. I don't see there really being such a thing as stuck with too many Ints!

I'm probably going to strip and repaint them. If I end up getting another Aces box for the RG cards, I'll be up to 8 TIE interceptors. Perfect to strip and have one 4 ship 181st flight, and one 4 ship Royal guard flight.

i played with 3 RG+PTL+Hull upgrade and Backstabber last week, went 3-0, faced Falcoln,Y-wings,X-wings a B-wing and even an A-wing. It is so much fun and so non Formational if thats a word.

Was looking at trying this this week. Glad to see it works well!

No doubt, 4 RG+PtL is a lot of fun. You'll move after most other ships and shoot first. It hits the sweet spot. Can't wait for the Aces to be tournament legal!

I have also run three beefed up Ints with great success. Vader with Soontir and Jax is also a fun combo.
